Morning Dew - Jerry Garcia (Europe '72) Guitar Solo Lesson | Grateful Dead

Музыка

Written in 1961 by Canadian singer/songwriter Bonnie Dobson, “Morning Dew” is set against a post-apocalyptic landscape, and takes form of a conversation between the last man and last woman on earth realizing that there was nothing left. It's hard to believe this was the first song Dobson had ever written!
The Dead began playing “Morning Dew” in 1967, and the song transformed significantly over the years. Early versions were played at a faster pace, but by the early 70s evolved into a mournful dirge, and featured Garcia’s heartfelt vocals and soulful guitar playing. These early 70s version featured wonderful playing from the entire band, especially Bob Weir.
In this video we take a look at Jerry Garcia’s guitar solo on the “Europe ‘72” version, which comes from their May 26, 1972 concert played at Strand Lyceum in London.

His name is Dennis Leonard. He actually left the sound booth to watch Jerry play this tune because in his words “this is where I was supposed to be right now”and Jerry shot him a look like “who is mixing this”? Came to be the levels mixed perfectly without a soul in the booth!!! So demonstrative of the GD “what is meant to be will be” mantra. Anyway, other than the closing of The Winterland run in October 1974, this in my opinion is the apogee of Jerry’s playing. On anything. Which in itself is a bold statement. His “outro” solo over the F C Em segment is some of the finest guitar phrasing in the history of music.

I had this problem for a while, especially up around the 12th and higher. I found it was down to the angle I was striking the string with the pick, I was pushing it in toward the fretboard and so damping it. Problem now cured. I use 10 -46 gauge too and low action..

@@jonathanroselaw That's a very classical way of looking at things. I know different music publishers do things different, but to me, I think modal keys are relevant. But, from a classical point of view, they would have the key signature (in this case) be D Major, and then you would know that's it's Mixo because of all the C naturals. There are plenty of publishers out there that do use modal keys. For example (again in this case) you'd see one sharp in the key signature with an asterisk saying that the key signature represents D Mixolydian. You don't have to make that note, but it can be helpful. Regardless, I wouldn't say it's in G, because the tonal center is in D. But again, I don't subscribe to a strictly classical view of music theory, so I'm completely ok with Modal Keys. But there is more than one school of thought on that subject.

  • @jonathanroselaw

@@WeepingWillowGuitarLessons Well first off I do feel honored that you took time out to get into a discourse on music theory with me. Yes, I agree it is a classical perspective however if we take a big step back and and analyze this song from purely a musical theory point of view we are really in G Major and the F major segment is really a switch to G Myxolydian (F Major being the b7 Myxolydian; the C Major being the IV Lydian and the relative E Minor being the VI Aeolian). To me, “modal” and “keys” are two separate dichotomies. Regardless, great tab. And I wish it wasn’t too late to have an opportunity to listen to how he approached this song from a music theory perspective.

  • @WeepingWillowGuitarLessons

I've been doing a lot of reading and thinking about music theory and how it applies to popular/folk/blues music. I'm still reading/researching, but as it stands now, here are some of my thoughts: Traditional Euroclassical theory and analysis doesn't work well for popular music (encompassing blues, folk, anything more contemporary). But even if you were to use strict theory, any key signature can denote two different keys. One sharp at the beginning of the page can signify the key of either G major or E minor, and you won't know until you look at the notes and see where the harmonic weight is. Modally, G major is G Ionian and E minor is E Aeolian. I feel you can then extrapolate and the key of the tune could really be any one of the 7 major modes. The tonic of Morning Dew to me is unambiguously D. All the harmonic weight is on D. The main chord loop begins and ends on D. Then the melody begins on D and ends of A (fifth of D). Then for the next section that goes to F, going to the major chord on the flat third is a pretty common move in popular music. And then it resolves back to D. Everything tells me (and my ear) that the tonal center is D, not G.
