Morgoth: The War of Wrath | Tolkien Explained

Ойын-сауық

Morgoth Part 3! The epic conclusion to the tale of the original Dark Lord of Middle-earth! In today's video, we pick up with Húrin, captured during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, as he and his family are cursed by Morgoth. The Dark Lord presses his advantage, seeking to destroy the realms of Falas, Doriath, and the hidden city of Gondolin. Eventually, Eärendil , the father of Elrond and Elros, comes to Aman to beg the valar for their intervention - resulting in the War of Wrath and the largest battle Middle-earth will ever see.

The war against Melkor kinda explains why people like Elrond, Gandalf and Galadriel were fairly chill about Sauron. Sure, he was the worst thing CURRENTLY happening in Middle-Earth, and posed a threat that had to be dealt with EVENTUALLY. But to those who survived the first and second ages, the Third Age looked tame. Only one noteworthy dragon, Ungoliont was long-vanished, and the most powerful threat is a former liuetenant with a fraction of his bosses power. Melkor literally darkened the entire world twice. Sauron had to work hard to create a cloudy day to stop his Orcs from getting sunburned. Not to mention, Sauron never created anything like the Dragons, just improved on Melkor's designs. Sauron was, to them, a clean-up operation before going home to Valinor.

It's why Sauron had to resort to manipulations and trickery during the Second Age. He did not have nearly the power his former master held, to wage war whenever he wanted. The timing had to be right, or he had to be prideful or desperate enough to challenge them in might.

This is why Saruman joining Sauron made zero sense. Sauron was not a greater power rising in the East if that's what Saruman was seeking lol. Saruman is a maiar who witnessed entire 1st and 2nd age and was selected to guide the men in 3rd age as being the wisest. He of all should understand, all it take for this 3rd age playhouse between men and Sauron to end is by some really powerful Maiar unleashed by the Valars. The host of valinor don't even need to show up. Saruman with his pride, power and all wouldn't even need to bow down to a Sauron who is of his equal while diminished without physical form

@@nate7LP_my_dog_found_the_knife That makes me wonder. Was Sauron still loyal to Melkor, or would he have turned on him eventually? I think what makes Sauron far worse than Melkor is his unwavering commitment to malice. It was Sauron who created Black Speech, to utilize Orcs as soldiers, and his iron will was impossible to challenge. The idea that such an independent Maiar such as Sauron could keep serving Melkor is frightening.

  • @RovingPunster

Even scarier - Sauron, the chief villan of LOTR, was just ONE of Melkor's finger puppets. An underling, and not even his greatest ... during the 1st age he was arguably 3rd or 4th in might behind Gothmog, Ancalagon the Black, and Glaurung. Sauron's chief attributes, besides being a peerless sorcerer of undying relentless hatred, were cunning, patience and his ability to survive ... he always played the long game.

@@corneliusmaze-eye2459 IMNSHO, the word "loyalty" doesnt really apply where (quasi)divine mythological archetypes are involved ... it's a bit like wondering if the seven deadly sins are loyal to the embodiment of evil, or if Red Blue and Green are loyal to Primary Color. As for opining that Sauron was somehow worse than Melkor ... uhm, that's a bit NO, with a capital "N". Melkor was as far above Sauron in terms of power and importance to Arda as Gandalf was above Bill Ferney. Sauron bred orcs and created the black speech yes, and was the chief bad for the 2nd and 3rd ages yes, but the 2nd and 3rd ages only totalled around 5kyrs, which was only a small fraction of all the time covered in the Silmarillion, most of it before the Sun and Moon even appeared. Morgorth threw down entire mountain ranges, uplifted valleys, drained seas, and destroyed the great lights thst preceeded the Sun ... and not just once, but TWICE, and even the Valar couldnt prevent it. Morgorth sang the chief opposition role in the Divine Music that created the entire world and the entirety of all future history that would subsequently unfold. No ... Sauron, for all his might, was just an underling, when compared to Morgorth.

The fact that one man was able to create a mythology so great, a legendarium so vast and detailed tells much about the genius of Tolkien. All other religions and myths of the world have evolved and moulded over hundreds of years, the lore abridged and modified by many men and women throughout the ages. And yet, the more I learn about Tolkien's world, the more I am enthralled by the detail and the vast history that he was able to craft just in his own life. Truly, he created one of the greatest mythologies to ever exist for our world, and it will only grow in popularity and renown, as it should.

But that is something Tolkein plays with. The idea that the world is perpetually diminishing; Things and people were bigger and grander in the past, even the darkness was greater; that the elegance of the Eldar days were gone when everyone spoke like a poet instead of peasant slang; The world and structures in it were more carefully built and appreciated, that everything is always a shadow of what the past had to offer. Tolkein was a romantic who grew up in a time when the Aristocracy lost all its flare, leadership, and worth. He became a man at a time when the world tried to embrace the principles of democracy, that any man could rise to lead men. Actually, Tolkein - as great as he is - has some funny ideas about who deserves power, dignity, and righteousness

@@concept5631 Act 2 would be The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings together, since they both tell two parts of the same story. Act 3 is about the Dagor Dagorath, which Tolkien obliquely called The End. Thus, Aristotle's Three Act form is followed: Act 1 (Silmarillion) introduces the main characters and the conflict between antagonists and protagonists, Act 2 (Hobbit/LOTR) develops the conflict and Act 2 (Dagor Dagorath/The End) resolves the conflict. Judging by the stories of Samwise as the Mayor battling Saruman Sharkey (lol) and his own notes on the DD as Act 3, Tolkien very much wanted the last story to be about how all races merge into humanity, with normal humans fighting the much-reduced antagonists of legend, until the rising action leads to a final battle with Giants, many many Dragons, Balrogs and other fantastic creatures who will be serving the revived Melkor.

Like many young folks, I discovered the 'The Hobbit' sometime in my early tweens. Then a bit later, I read the LOTR books, sometime during high school. That time for me was the early 90s, and those books rocked my world, like so many others before me that had read them.. I had no idea that the Silmarillion was a thing until about a year before the first Peter Jackson movie came out, and they had put up a giant display of Tolkien's books at my local Chapters; hoping to cash in on the hype surrounding the film. I had no idea what I had purchased that day, I just thought the name 'Silmarillion' sounded cool. Well!..By the time I had read about the two trees being drained and the Nolder setting foot back on Middle Earth, I was hooked! By the time I got to the end and realized the scope of the whole history... Well... I was simply amazed, just.. so amazed. Twenty two years has past since then, a lifetime ago it seems, but I can still recall that moment when I finished the book and my brain tried to process the utter depth and scope of imagination that I had just partook in. The Silmarillion is a very special book... These video serials of Melkor's exploits are so well done. Bearing in mind that "Legendary" Histories about "Legendary" Wars are often full of "Legends"*. One should take any such stories with a grain of salt. Even those within the framework of a fictional world. Herodotus, Founder of History in Western Civilization, claimed that Xerxes the Great of the Achaemenid Empire brought One Million Persian warriors and Allied Nations to the battle at Thermopylae, (That battle in the movie "300".), Simonides of Ceos alleged Three Million. Complete nonsense but it made for good reading and excellent story-telling back in Greece. Old stories are often expanded on over time into Great Epics. The greater the time, the more gilding of the lilly. The length of these wars also proves little vis-à-vis their relative significance. World War Two only lasted 6 years, whereas the Hundred Years War was over one hundred years, yet we all know which one caused the most carnage. Of course, The Hundred Years War was important to France as the end resolution of the fighting removed England and the Houses Plantagenet and Lancaster as usurpers to the French Throne-so Vive la France!-but not quite as significant as WWII. *Stuff and nonsense/Fiddle-faddle and rot.

I didnt quite understand the monologue at the beginning of LotR Fellowship of the Ring until i watched your videos on the 1st Age a few times. Which was spoken by Galadriel. (I amar prestar aen.) The world is changed. (Han matho ne nen.) I feel it in the water. (Han mathon ned cae.) I feel it in the earth. (A han noston ned gwilith.) I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. I now understand this first part of the intro monologue. Its a reference to the events of the 1st Age. Most would refer these words as Galadriel speaking as if the events of the 3rd Age had long passed into the 4th Age. After seeing your videos, its brought new insight for me and understanding. Lets break it down: The world has changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. - Refers to the world being forever changed by the sinking of Beleriand after the War of Wrath and Numenor in the 2nd Age into the ocean. She describes it as if the very nature of the world around her in Middle-Earth is affected by the loss of Beleriand and Numenor. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it - This refers to once great lands and kingdoms of Beleriand that represented the pentacle of Elvish society that was lost due to Morgoth and once again refers to the great height of man in the island Kingdom of Numenor that was lost due to the arrogance and jealous of man towards the Valar as well as corruption from within by Sauron the Deceiver. All who can remember these tragic events are either long dead having died in these events or died some years after. Take Feanor or Hurin or even Isildor for examples. Or even Glorfindel who was the only person to have fought down a Balrog at the Fall of Gondolin and died to only return back to life many many years later in the following age by the will of the Valar due to his great deeds. Making Glorfindel the one of only two to have been brought back to life after facing down, coincidentally, a Balrog of Morgoth. The other being Gandalf who brought down Durin's Bane in the 3rd Age in Moria.

Desperately awaiting the Beren and Luthien video. I dont know, their love in an ancient time like the beginnings of the FA, seems magical to me. Like that period was thousands of years ago before the war of the ring, and you have people still acting and being the same in that dark time. I guess in our culture we read about ancient romances like these that occured thousands of years ago and think it was somehow different from today's courtship rituals.

For anyone who loves both metal and Tolkien's works, i highly recommend Blind Guardian and specially their album "Nightfall In Middle Earth". Most songs there are about the stories from Silmarillion, with my favourites being "Noldor", "Curse Of Feanor", "A Dark Passage" and "Blood Tears". For example, since this a video about Morgoth, the song "A Dark Passage" is all about him, even quoting the curse he set with "With my eyes you'll see, with my ears you'll hear".

That's my favorite song on the album lol. And the way the song ends with a marching beat and "Slowly Marching On" repeating over and over. I've heard that Blind Guardian hired Tolkien experts to ensure the songs were as loyal as possible to the source material.

It's amazing how vast & well thought out the history of Arda is. Tolkien's work & world building puts all other to shame. Just imagine how many stories & books there would be if he had written about the contents of the silmarillion (I get why he didn't, but I've always been *way* more interested in all this rather than the fellowship story) (Also, Ancalagon is the greatest dragon to have ever lived in the history of everything. No other dragon in any story can ever compare to this BEAST)

Morgoth is truly an awesome dark lord, and perhaps the greatest thing about him is his legacy, chief among which was Sauron. That anyone else could rise to the degree of malice he left on Middle Earth says scary things about both Melkor and Sauron.

I'm so grateful that you made it into a 3 parter, and that you finished with the end-times with the raising of the sunken lands and the last deed of the dwarves. Didn't know that was a thing even. Thank you so very much!

Silmarillion is not an easy book for everyone. Most of the casual readers will only read the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit which are the easy adventure books. Maybe this is the reason why we didn't get any movies, or games adaptations so far. For those who can handle to read this book it will give you a fantastic amounts of Middle-Earth lore. The War of Wrath was the biggest battle that has ended the first era, but Dagor Dagorath battle will be much bigger. If you want to catch a glimpse of it I recommend using a mod created by a fandom to The Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth 2 Dagor Dagorath mod which adds first era units to the game that includes hero units like Melkor or Ancalagon the Black (this dragon used to crash the game because he was too big for game engine to handle). For a veteran of this franchise this video did remind me of certain things, but it will be a big help for the newcomers. PS. The history of Túrin Turambar, and his wife Niënor is one of the most darkest stories in this franchise. Not only Melkor curse affected Turin himself, but it caused tragic events for his children and grandchildren (you can learn more if you read a book). So it's only natural that Turin is the only one that should deal a killing blow to Melkor.
