Morgan tried for 2 years to get permission thru Prince's attorneys to cover this song. She kept asking if Prince had heard her recording. She said she just felt like he would allow it if he heard it. Finally, L. A. Reed got ahold of him, he listened to it and didn't hesitate to say yes. Quite the remarkable man he was. soooo talented !

She has that vintage soul voice. Her voice is actually considered unique in this modern day of "music," but back then this is what talent sounded like.

No. Prince is too low on the list. No one needs his permission.

Prince has almost never given the rights to cover any of his songs. You have to have the artistry and talent that even Prince would be amazed by. She's got it all and more, and therefore deserved the rights to make this jaw-dropping cover.

Not sure why that myth persists. Prince can’t stop anyone from covering his songs because of Compulsory License Laws. Prince himself lamented this fact in several interviews. He hated Tom Jones cover of Kiss & Sinead’s cover of Nothing Compares to You. He couldn’t stop them though.The most Prince could do was refuse to negotiate a lower royalty than the Statutory Rate.

I'm a Prince afficionado. Just saw the video for this 5 minutes ago for the first time and I gotta say Ms. Morgan James did a fantastic cover of this.

Heard it 11 minutes past midnight, on Radio Montecarlo; a big open window facing a Tuscan's street slightly colored of yellow by street lights, you can feel the shape of the hills behind some buildings. Summer breeze is refreshing me while this song is broadcasted on the radio and I'm astonished

Keith Bell Sadly Keith, I'm not so sure that "the industry" would allow that to happen. I'm not saying they're holding her back, but they sure aren't promoting her. I realize the entire way we listen to and purchase music has changed from a decade or two ago. I guess partly because of that I'm as much of a listen to it on KZread kind of guy or a Pandora guy. But I still like to go out to the music store and buy an album on occasion and Morgan's is nowhere to be found. I'm guessing she's signed to smaller record label. Same thing with Elisabeth Withers. Elisabeth and Morgan are two of the finest singers on the planet, but good luck finding any of their music or albums, at least around here. A local r&b station would play some Elisabeth Withers, but I don't know if they've played Morgan's song at all. Thank God for the internet and Music Choice, which is I actually first came across Morgan. We want Morgan to blast off into the stratosphere, it's going to take a grass roots effort! :)

PetraZ yeah, he approved of her and Miguel..he told him to sing "Purple Rain", I think Miguel had only a guitar if that. I'm sure it was an honor for both, because Prince didn't care for others remaking his songs.

I heard her in concert a couple of months ago. She said it took her a couple of years to get approval from Prince to do this song and that when he heard it, he liked her cover very much.

I don't know why I expected this to be horrible. I guess because I'm in love with the original and that's what I was looking for when I searched on KZread. But I'm glad I clicked on this and gave it a chance because she can BLOW and I'm a new fan!

When a song is properly written as we know Prince is famous for doing a good singer can always take it and demonstrate the beauty of their voice.Morgan has definitely done that here.

What a beautiful voice. I love this version of Prince's "Call My Name" and it is a tough feat to redo a song and make it your own.

She makes me cry each time I listen to her. The talent in her is moving like the greats that have given us years of beautiful songs she is another that is added to this list. I do not know who is producing and promoting her but they are not doing a very good job, this woman should be on and in everything. Love you Morgan:-)

Morgan is explosive ! Her range is up there and I love every bit of her sound. Jazzy soulful touching and expressive just love that sass. More More and more the remake of Baby I love you was awesome.9

What an amazing cover; you know she's gotta have the pipes or Prince would never have permitted this. Her Broadway resume is also impressive. Check out her cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" or the Jackson 5's "Where You Are". Goosebumps!

I had the good fortune of going to her live concert. Her singing is phenomenal. Her person is beautiful. I felt extremely inspired afterwards.

I'm not sure but I think this is the best singer in the world right now. If not the very best, at the top, of the top three. That's just my opinion anyway. But I cannot believe her power. Holy cow. She's got to be in the Etta James range of power. Maybe more. This lady is incredible.

I love this song! I can so relate to wanting that feeling of getting my arms around my Lilly. I can so understand why Prince gave his stamp of approval on her version of his song, its very impressive. I first learned of Morgan James from Post Modern Jukebox & I'm so glad I did. Saw this lady in a Post Modern Jukebox video. I grew up in the 60s as a white kid listening to Motown, and this brought such a smile from me. I will spend some time while working with my headphones playing you tube songs from her and looking for albums I can buy to add to my "I'm having a bad commute day and need an instant boost to get over it" playlist.

This women is something I discovered yesterday. She's above every female singer today. What a voice!!!!!!!
