More winter prep in an off-grid cabin in the mountains of Spain

Hi, we're Warner and Alejandra, and we have recently moved into an off-grid stone home in the mountains of Cantabria, Spain. With winter fast approaching, we have a long list of to-do's to get through in order to make our living situation as comfortable as possible. Join us as we get firewood, improve our chimney and more!

    I love it when you interspersed the photos of the mushroom, certain trees, views of the mountains, etc. while you were talking. What a huge endeavor you have undertaken trying to fix the washing machine, the fireplace smoke, potholes in the driveway and trying to edit during a blackout! What patience you both have. You live in a beautiful area of Spain that looks very much like the mountains that surround the valley in which I live in Montana, USA. Living off the grid is an interesting when we can watch it on KZread! 😅 P.S. I HATE wind but thankfully we don’t have endless days of it very often.

    So glad you liked the video! And thank you for really getting us. We’re so lucky to be here, but it is also very challenging at times, and we try to share both aspects. Montana must be so beautiful and is high on our list to visit if we ever do a road trip through the US. Sending you lots of love! ♥️

    Hi you two, and thankyou for such a beautiful vvideo. We can relate to everything you are doing and every obstacle you come up qgainst. We were much okder when we bought land in Spain, and for 6 years we lived in a tiny wooden chalet, no water, no electric, and certainly no mod cons. No washing macine, no internet, just us, a log burner, comfy bed, and two cats. The best 6 years of our lives, and like you we laughed off all the problems. We arent as remote as you, much nearer civilization. After 6 years we built a beautiful home, still living very simply. We lived in that for 10 years eventually getting a small solar system. Then, just over a year ago at thevripe old age of 73 we sold up & bought an old Casita, unlived in for over 20 years. Started all over again , and like Weiner , many days we feel broken 😂 but loving every minute. We have a good Solar system, but after 18 years still no TV, wnd try to live simply. You are lucky to be doing this while your young, so enjoy every minute. Its a stunning location, a beautiful little home, and you both akways seem so happy. Happy New Year from our little bit of Spain. Love, Patricia ❤❤

    Oh my, what a fascinating journey. Thanks for sharing it with us Patricia! You are certainly very brave taking on such challenging projects one after the other. Hope the works on the casita go well and that you continue to enjoy all the facets of the process. Sending you lots of love from our own little corner of Spain ❤

    Great to network with your neighbours and get things together sometimes, it saves so much. I also love that the locals get supported more, one day it might be something you've grown that they're buying.❤

    You need some spray foam insulation for your air gaps and stack the wood outside and put a tarp over it.

    That House used to be a cattle barn. Made to look after cattle, not after humans that were expendable. Welcome to Cantabria, the jewel of the Spanish North. Green like a precious Stone beside a silver sea. Nature IS wonderfully beautyful, but unforguiving!

    Good to see you've got a chainsaw. I was damned scared of it at the beginning but over time it gets much easier. I still don't sharpen my blades but get them done at the Stihl distributor, and I use 4 - 5 chains that keep me going on big jobs. A few times we have had problems with our fireplace. It has been wet wood creating carbon and blocking the chimney, ash building up on the top of the plate above the fireplace (needs cleaning every 2-3 years). We get the cleaning done professionally as you need a certificate for the house insurance.

    it's not dry or wet , though dry is naturally better, it's how green it is which if you burn green wood it clogs your chimney up with sticky soot, so do not burn the wood you just collected could you put some type of board to the back of your front door? temporally til you can repair it thanx for sharing

    If you get that much snow,wouldn’t you need a lot more petrol for the generator? I live in the northern end of Australia, so it’s not an issue Hereford winter but we can lose power if hit by a cyclone, so same principle, I guess.

  • @WaleandMe

    @WaleandMe

    5 ай бұрын

    We have 30L of petrol which should last us a couple of weeks (we try to use the generator as little as possible and minimise our electricity needs). It also shouldn't snow for that long. It only happened a couple of years ago with a crazy storm, but we keep track of the weather in case we need to prep further. This winter so far has been really mild.

    It's great to see what your doing and how you are up against the life from being totally townies to country living but to be honest a lot more planning and organising would have saved you a lot of wasted time. Running around with a moisture meter is daft when you have down draft problems and totally insufficient electricity supply. I wish you the very best of luck
