More SSDs and HP T630 Thin Client FINALLY Gets Windows 10 (9-13-2020)

Ойын-сауық

I got around to buying more SSDs, one to upgrade the capacity of the M.2 SSD in my main computer, and one for the Latitude E6430... wait what's the thin client got to do with any of this, wasn't it getting the NVMe drive? Well watch and find out what happens. That's the nature of clickbait.

I'm wondering if perhaps the NVMe device was detected, but there was no firmware support for booting from it. On my previous gaming machine (Haswell era), I had to hack in NVMe support by UEFI booting from an EFI partition containing rEFInd and an NVMe EFI driver (NVMExpressDXE.efi). rEFInd would load the driver and then be able to boot Windows. There are actually several types of M.2 solid state drives: PCIe (NVMe), PCIe (AHCI, drive acts like a 1-port SATA controller), SATA (pins on the slot speak SATA), and apparently eMMC (similar to an SD card).

This WD drive has MNMe interface. Not supported by the T630, which supports SATA. Wrong drive = not detected.

This switch option in 'BIOS' was for PCIe/SATA, any PCIe device but not for disk PCIe (with NVMe protocol).

Will the T630 support 2tb m.2 sata ssd?

The reason you couldn't fit the cover plate to the T630 was that the small green latch to unlock the lid was still in the unlocked position. It will fit flat when the lid is locked. You had to slide the latch to unlock and remove the lid. I have a herd of these T630's running as Minecraft servers for the kids (headless Ubuntu Server), HTPC (Windows 10) , small NAS (OMV) and at one stage a firewall (ipFire and a bunch of USB/Ethernet adapters). I pick them up off-lease for the equivalent of about US$40, you can't beat that value.

NIce video. Have you ever managed to boot your Thinclient from an internal USB? The port seems great for that purpose as its 3.0 and hidden away. But I can never get it to boot from there...

I had the same issue with my m2 in the t630, ordered a new sata disk. I’m curious how you were able to use a disk larger than 128g, because according to the product specs the max should be 128…. Anyways, I’ve got Ubuntu 22.04 running, does a fair job. Thanks for the video!

When it comes to spec sheet from the big companies. They will list what is available at the time the product is released. As this is a marketed as a Thin Client, they were not meant to have much storage anyway. Even the ones that came with Windows 10 IoT, only had 32GB of storage. The Linux ones (ThinPro etc) come with 16GB normally.. You will often find that specs may say 16 GB RAM as max. Yet the chipset can do 32GB. The 8 and 16GB sticks are just what was prevalent or available, in the market at the time.

It's possible it could accept the 2666 MHz stick, but from what I've read it won't utilize it, as it runs the memory at 1866 MHz anyway. It's a limitation of the CPU.

Worst companies HP and Dell! I mean those M.2 are standardized in size but those companies make the user experience worst when you need to change something... This was the case in the 90's and it is still that way... Would never buy anymore anything from those POS companies
