Molly is just incredible. She's so humble & sweet, but clearly loves every note of what she's playing. I love her attitude, music, and style. Thank you, Molly.
Wow. Just wow!
Beautiful playing and lovely person. If I practice everyday for about the next 3 years, I may just about be able to play it!
Molly is a phenominal guitar player. I actually wrote a piece of music based on this claw hammer technique and people say it's the best song I play. Thank you, Molly!
That's a lot of solid technique behind that melody.
So good, so authentic, so hard to do THAT well! Molly ROCKS!!! xx TE
I am so in love with clawhammer style, and you are such an inspiration, Molly, and what a beautiful song.
I heard your song while I was at the grocery store. I fell in love with it and recorded it on my phone as I was shopping. Thank you for taking the time to share how you play the song. I'll spend the next week learning how to play it !
Tremendous guitars lesson from molly I feel my guitar playing has taken a new leap, many thanks.👍😊
That's ADVANCED as hell!!! Damnit you go girl
been working on it for 10 days and sinking slowly into despair
the hand technique reminds me alot of when bass players do slap bass. alot of percussive notes and thumps almost. its amazing
Rocking! I love that percussive thump coming from her index finger hitting the top.
That's beautiful! Thanks Guitar World for bringing the wonderful artist, Molly Tuttle to my attention! I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed these videos she's done and I hope she will do more. In this one in particular I couldn't help thinking this technique is like turning bass slapping inside out! (Which I suppose shouldn't be all that surprising seeing as how bass slapping is probably slightly younger than the upright bass itself and in mountain music forever!) But somehow, though I've heard claw hammer before, I never had it broken down and explained like this. I'll have to give it a try for myself so I can play along to her cd. Thanks again GW and to you as well, lovely Miss Molly!
And that's why she's Molly Tuttle. Great stuff.
. Anyone who wants to play Molly Tuttle's "Take The Journey" should stop by Steve Baughmann and his Clawhammer Guitar Lesson on the way. It's worth it! And be sure to check out the full runs Molly plays when listening out or transcribing. That's because when explaining the individual parts, she leaves out some thumb strokes from the "bum-didi" and you don't see the movements she plays in the normal passes. I know: not good English, but I hope it helps anyway :-) @ Molly: thanks for sharing these riffs and your knowledge to give your community access and inspiration to new styles and ways to play guitar. Thank you so much :-)
Wow. That was excellent.
Really beautiful so is the playing. Hi from the UK 🇬🇧
Great guitar playing!
Awesome!
I am speechless with envy at the amazing technique. plus I think I'm in love.
Generous spirit in a lovely, brilliant artist. Thank you!
she's so good it makes my head spin. My hands just won't do this on guitar. lol
Your syncopation is not of this planet.. amazing!
cool
Great stuff :)
Amazing player and fine woman! Last lesson i watched actually got me into this style, thank you for the great videos!
Hola from Barcelona! I tried ...I fail XD, only one MT, awesome! ...please more
Спасибо за урок !
Molly you ace
Sweet
The way you perform that - the technique is IMO much more complex than it appears. The open tuning affords you the ability to syncopate that clawhammer thumb technique while picking the notes.. but still, reproducing that sound is challenging for me in that syncopation. Are you also hitting the pick guard with your hand?
Awesome lesson. Her thumb seems to be doing a bit more than the annotation shows.
damn that riff is so tight
Okay for real, how difficult is it to learn to play for someone with zero experience? What's the best way to learn? What kind of time commitment needs to be made? I've been rediscovering my love of Americana grass music and the acoustic sound. Might be having my midlife crisis, I've always wanted to learn to play.

1. Start with the very basics and build fundamental skills (bluegrass rhythm and leads) slowly. Lots of free lessons on KZread. 2. Enjoy yourself by learning to play songs that are at your skill level as your going through the process, being careful of course not to bite of more than you can chew so you don't get discouraged. 3. Set a realistic practice schedule. Maintain consistency. If you can, look for other guitar players you can jam with to help develop yourself. Most of us aren't ever going to get near the level Molly is at but if you put in the effort, you can become a decent player. Might even enjoy listening to yourself from time to time 😉.

A while - it depends what style you are learning and how technical. This particular tune isn't too hard - it's mostly the right hand technique that needs to be solid, the left hand is not doing a lot of difficult stuff in comparison. Everything helps, like I mostly played electric with a pick and then I started playing a lot more acoustic lately, learned Machine Gun Man by Zakk Wylde, but to get the basics of guitar down it's a few months. The most important thing is pick it up and play it. If you really enjoy messing with the instrument, the skills will arrive just based on the amount of time you pick it up. If I had a few tips it would be - 1. Record yourself so you can hear your progress - there's nothing more discouraging than not knowing you are getting better 2. Listen to yourself so you can find where your weaknesses are (timing, hand synchronisation, picking errors) and work on them, your weaknesses bring down your overall playing 3. Don't get discouraged - you are always going to be your biggest critic, you'll get there. I'd say you could play this tune within a few months if you concentrated on it, but there's a lot to learn with guitar :)
Brilliant. But also... 4:38 Ask This Old House theme??
ugh i been playing clawhammer for years and cant get this kind of clarity or exact rhythm down

How are your fingernails? They can't be too short or too long. Mine protrude just barely past my fingertips and I'm getting a pretty strong and percussive sound.
She’s a genius... and a rainbow!
A free lesson from Molly Tuttle.... hmm not too bad lol.
