    Thanks so much for making your videos on the FXR! You're doing a great, even with posting your mistakes! I always said the best mentor you can have is failure! Anyway, your videos regarding your electrical problems hit home with me. I own an 87 FXLRC, 80 cube inch EVO, and I have had some electrical issues going on that the Harley Davidson dealership couldn't diagnose because the problem is intermittent, and they couldn't replicate the problem. Of course, $350 later and nothing to show for it, I still have the problem. My bike runs great most of the time, however, occasionally, it will sputter, cut out, run on one cylinder, or even die completely. I turn everything off and back on once or multiple times and the engine starts right up and runs good. Any ideas on what it could be? I am definitely in your shoes now (although mine are 66 years old) and want to try diagnosing the problem myself. I will start by checking the voltage on the battery, strator, and regulator, as well as the resistance. Any thoughts or advice from you and your partner would help. Keep up the great videos!

    What I would do is take a meter to your battery turn the bike on and start it. If the voltage goes up your charging system is good. I have replaced the stator and voltage regulator since this video. I had a seperate problem where my bike would just shut off and it was the ignition system if your bike shuts off pull the spark plug out one at a time still connected to the electrical lead hold it to the case and crank the bike if you don’t have spark start t/s that

    I had a similar issue with my 92 FXR, the regulator went out luckily I was at home and didn't get stranded. Funny wiring story for me I was wiring up a set of blinkers on my sportster that I had before the FXR. I wired them up and they would just turn on and not blink. After a little digging I found out I wired it up to the indicator light (same wire color) so it didn't blink lol. Love the FXR stories, breaking down and fixing is half the fun of owning them. Anyone with a half way decent credit score can walk into a showroom and buy a bike, but not everyone can keep 'em runnin

    My 94 FXDS has the same paint scheme...I did bars on my bagger and the tri bar brake light was constantly on I went crazy troubleshooting thinking it was the brake sensor or crossed wires. Turns out it's also a running light 🤓 Happy memorial day 🇺🇸 thank you for your service.

    When I put the lucky Dave’s lucky 13 on my 06 street bob I tried to run the wires through the handle bars without de-pinning the small connectors which did not end well for me. The connectors got stuck part way through on one side and I spend two hours trying to get them back out without breaking them. Finally got them out and de-pinned everything and ran them through in like 5 min after that. The Deutsch connectors had to be de-pinned as those fat things were never going to fit. I was re-pinning those and I accidentally snapped the pin off the wire for the brights. So I have yet to fix that.

  • @dynademos

    @dynademos

    2 жыл бұрын

    That’s the worst! I seen someone widen the hole for the connectors to go through on the bar thought that was a good idea. On the older bikes they didn’t come with connectors so I had to cut all the wires it turned into a mess!

    @@dynademos yeah I’m no wiring expert either. I just had to wire in some DRL (daytime running lights for those that don’t know the acronym). But I wanted to be able to remove everything when needed so I had to solder in some new plugs but it ended up working out.

  • @josephtizol9695
    @josephtizol96953 жыл бұрын

    No worries I too suck at wiring. I did Big Al’s risers n bars on my 83 FXR so I didn’t know how to de pin the switches which I assume would be the right way to do it so I basically cut all the wires at the switches then cut the wires where they come out if the headlight block and soldered…for the first time…about 45? fn connections. Don’t ask me how but all my shit works. My gauges are set up like yours I got that black mesh looking sleeve and ran em through that it cleaned it up a little. So anyway ya there ya go that’s how we learn right.? Semper Fi 🇺🇸

    @@dynademos I was at Cabelas in lacy. Parking sloped so I just "push started" bike, fired up, sounded normal, so I chanced it to ride s. around horn from I-5 to hwy101 n. of Shelton. Harley got me home, so starting looking at entire charging system (good step by step on you tube). But in that short distance, getting me home, the system over loaded an Junked the battery! Like name imply Regulator regulates voltage charge, that different charge can mess us battery an more. So try not to run bike until fix unless absolutely necessary, you'll be buying electrical parts!

    @@dynademos you've got a multi- tester. You might also have continuity tester. With both tools an helping hand you can trace out your wiring! Dad use to say, treat testing electricity like the flow of water! (Whatever that means?) It helps to have couple wires with alligator clips for when testing leads aren't long enough. If your by yourself, good to have spare alligator clips around to clip test leads onto units when you don't have enough hands! I'm just thinking here, you know this stuff!
