More Important Than Learning Web Development

Software development is awesome, but we all encounter defining moments that help us see what matters most. This is my story. Some things are more important than learning web development.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Got into a doctor and xrays show no broken bones but I have a bunch of soft tissue injuries to work through. Having to minimize thinking and focus for the next while to work through the concussion. Still painful in the chest and shoulders when I breath.

I hope you're getting better now James, all support from us❤ What You said in this video just my touched heart, I literally felt what you've been through at that mysterious moment. When I was 12 I had once been hit by a speeding car and fell on the floor in the middle of the street, I was not feeling anything and was almost unconscious, but the only thing I felt was my soul being just 1 meter away from exiting my body, I was also praying same as you were there, and I thought It was it, not until a bunch of group of beautiful people all of a sudden came to help and got me to the hospital, I was grateful. Sorry if my comment was too long. Sending hearts 💕

That hits hard to home. I feel like around Software Engineering has come this hustle culture, which says that a real programmer should program 24/7, have 100 github projects, 5+ free freelance projects, knows all the hot stuff. Just compare this for a second with another profession like accounting. Would you ever have the expectation from an accountant to do free accounting in his leisure time? Probably not, but then why do we expect this from software engineers. We should focus on a better work life balance, instead of excessive learning.

It's one of the reasons software devs get paid so much. They have to keep up with their skills to stay relevant in their job. College degrees can't even keep up with it. It's definitely not for everyone. You have to enjoy it or you will burn yourself out.

Speaking from experience with a severe concussion, it might take you as long as 1 year (or more) to feel absolutely 100%. Just be patient, very slowly ramp up your activities (coding, exercise, etc) and really try your best not to bang your head at all (which will be more difficult due loss of proprioception from the concussion). it will be frustrating but you will get through it and have a greater appreciation for your brain. Good luck with your recovery.

@@jamescross btw, I think my wife pushed too hard at first. She was also fostering kittens and would be on the computer trying to get them adopted. So, I don’t think she limited herself like she should have right away. And therefore it dragged out longer. But that is speculation on my part.

I'm sorry to hear about what you went through. I hope you are able to heal soon and maybe get a check up just to make sure that there is nothing going on under the surface, specially since you hit your head. Something similar happened to me, one morning , I had the crazy idea to get some fresh air with my sister and we went for a bike ride. It was hot and I had not eaten anything or drank water. After 15 minutes on the bike ride, everything began to quickly turn white and looking like a blur. Obviously I was dehydrated and my heart rate was really high. I felt like i was going to die and was afraid this was it. Luckily i was under a bridge when this happened and i just did some breathing techniques and let my heart rate lower a bit until i was able to get some water. moral of the story, always eat and have water with yoube before exercise. oh, also always have a helmet. feel better!

I've had concussions before. First advice I have is exercise regularly afterward. Elliptical machines are among the best ways to do this since they work nearly every muscle in the body at once, making them highly efficient. The quality of the machine matters a lot; Life Fitness brand are the best ones I've used so far. If you aren't used to them, just go 10 minutes a day 5x/week for a few weeks till your body adapts, focusing on building the intensity by upping the resistance/speed that you go, then after that initial month work up the length to 15-20 min. 10 minutes doesn't sound like a lot but since they work so much of your body at once it is effective so long as your intesity is between around 60-80%. You can maintain most of the benefits by only training 3x/week. The second thing I would consider is medical cannabis. This is especially helpful if you have recurring headaches or nausea and can help reduce long term damage. Cannabis is the only thing which stopped this for me and I didn't have to use it long term. I recommend eating a strain with a high CBD/THC ratio and which was grown indoors (outdoor strains will often have significant pesticide residue). It's necessary to activate it by heating in order to be orally effective. This is most easily done by cooking it in oil. The downside is it gets you stoned, if you consider that a downside. Not everyone finds themselves compatible with the mental effects, and I wouldn't consider it good for cognitive function if used consistently for long periods. I would consider it's level of addictiveness to be similar to caffeine. If you use it regularly for too long then when you stop you'll find yourself lying awake but not wanting to do anything. Kind of opposite of caffeine, where if you get addicted then stop, you'll want to do things but won't have the energy. Personally I rather enjoyed the combination, eating some cannabis then exercising, especially riding my bike.

so would you ever go back and learn anything different? going down a different career path? you could have this same distance after a traumatic accident with many many many different career choices. what exactly are you trying to say with out putting a negative stigma on coding or on any other career choice anyone chooses to pursue?

whatever your path, it's good to remember your family. it's not a negative about coding. just some events help us stay focused on what's most important.

I'm really sorry that happened to you I can tell you're pretty traumatize from it but I think maybe it was meant to happen for you to come to that realization and I really do agree with you. Rest well and see focus on the good that came out of it. 🙂
