Becoming a Self-taught Programmer (my story)

My journey from underwater construction to becoming a software engineer in 9 months. Becoming a self-taught programmer isn't easy, but for me it was worth it. Here's how it went down for me.

    Hey man, I'm in a coding camp right now. It's not full time but still pretty strenuous with a full time job and family responsibilities. I was really close to quitting after the second module and not being able to get some of my JavaScript to work. I stumbled across your channel and it's helped give me the motivation to push through. I appreciate you brother and look forward to more content. I hope success continues to come your way!

    Crazy yet amazing story James. Could you recomend any project ideas for a web portfolio. I'm having trouble trying to find projects that will help land me a job. Currently I am learning node js and after that React.

    Hey John, a lot of people do the todo apps which makes it harder to standout. what are your interests / hobbies? maybe we can come with some ideas around those. For example, i like cameras, so a related app might be one that includes a sun tracker to determine golden hour as well as a way to take pictures of cool places to shoot with location information and other notes.

    Hey man. I'm a 32 year old construction worker. Been around the trades since i was a kid I'm a full on plumber of 8 years. Now I have a full blown back injury. So here I am. I'm sure the roofing I did in my teens didn't help. I'm a fast learner tho.

    Very motivating story. I got a 2 years associate degree in CS do you think that it would help in landing my first software development job?

  • @jamescross

    @jamescross

    @Salem 2 years in CS is a better start than I had. It would definitely help in getting a job. If you recently got the associates degree, I would continue on to get the BS degree if possible. But, I would try to get a job as soon as possible to get experience and then work on the degree part time if that is an option. The biggest mistake I made was waiting to take the leap.

    @@jamescross Yup, pursuing my bachelors in CS currently, however got many pre reqs that are not related to CS to take and that it is taking lots of my time. So I'm thinking of taking a break from school to do my best to get my foot in the industry first.

    @Salem considering the salary growth potential that comes with experience, it could be a good financial decision. I would still work on the degree part time. There are some opportunities that will only be available to someone with a CS degree. Maybe next semester, shift your classes to the evening and focus on getting a job at the same time.

    I'm completely new to HTML-CSS and I'm a beginner in C# game dev on and off for years because I could never find time to go head to head without getting burnt out with life and work at the moment I'm working for a factory for pennies to the dollar I also just got a job at an arcade( planning to leave the factory to have more time coding but with that comes an 11 dollar pay cut) and in the interview, I told him about me working with C# and making a few games on unity.... and for some reason, I think he took that as I can create a website for his business... sooooooooo... Would you use Codeacademy as a way to learn to code such as web deving? to be honest I am thinking about it myself but I am unsure if I should go pro for the full-stack courses they have.
