The SCARY TRUTH about ChatGPT...

Is ChatGPT the future or is it going to destroy high paying jobs like software engineers? It will change things for sure, here are my thoughts on what the future looks like as artificial intelligence overtakes our lives. I'll also share how GitHub Copilot and other AI tools are changing software development.

No, but they will hire the cheapest people possible since all computers have crazy high amounts of RAM these days to compensate for all the bloated frameworks in use so you don't need to write super efficient code like you used to.

I shared a lot of these thoughts, especially about what it looks like in the future education systems. I will say this though I'm a junior dev that traditionally studied Java, JS/React, and a few backend supports was hired to do that but recently moved to a new role and team where I'm doing WSO2. Given that I'm a jr dev and don't have the most support currently in my new role ChatGPT has helped me learn so much more in a few that would have probably taken me twice as long. So yes there are things to be worried about but if you use it to learn and to explain logic to you I think it's probably one of the best tools next to having a mentor guide you through the learning curve.

Tech/AI like chat GPT will do the work that - lets be honest - we don't really want to do, & if we weren't getting paid, 9/10 of us would stop! For those of us that Love our work & would be active even without pay - we will find ways to have chat GPT/AI assist us by improving our efficiency. The challenge is .. what will we do when we don't have to 'work', at least not nearly as hard, because we have AI performing?

Bro it will never replace us if, unless we enter a Matrix like Era and machines gain consciousness... Not a scenario I'm eager to witness. Yes it will be different, but if you possess a hammer does not mean you possess the knowledge to forge a sword. And one interesting thing is that whatever the AI crates is open source in the eyes of the law. Yes you can ask it to write you a book, but you can't take credit for it. Its like the instance with a monkey taking a selfie with the camera of a nature photographer. Yes the photographer provided the camera but he wasn't the one taking the picture so the court ruled he has no claim on the picture and as the monkey is highly unlikely to claim royalties for it the picture is now open source. Fun stuff.

@@jamescross I'm already a level 3 at a non-FAANG large tech company and am not threatened by it all all.... right now. Coding is probably 30-40% of my job but I am solving a lot of unique problems on propitiatory systems that require unique solutions to meet unique requirments. I use chatGPT to debug some errors I run into and to help write an algorithm I may be unfamiliar with. It basically brings googling and stack overflow to me. However, I think big picture software in 5-10 years could look radically different and that's what worries me. The structure of agile and how humans do software could become obsolete, and there is no out-running this tech's ability if people like Sam Altmann are right about its future. That's a BIG if though. We'll see what industry trends happen.

  • @jamescross

my bad. based on your question I assumed you were just starting out. i think that the next couple of years will be alright for people starting out. things will change so how we do things will have to change. it may become harder for people to break into the industry as maybe there are fewer entry level type needs. thing is, ai is derived from things that exist, so it won't replace new innovations. that said, i could see employers expectations for how much a single dev produces go up and if one person can do the work of two or three thanks to more powerful tools, some companies may hire less. that said, there are other companies that would still hire more to accelerate growth so it's not totally clear how things will go.

@@jamescross Yes not not really close to humans. It needs a repo of data to wrap around. Chat would be like a frontend interaction layer. Much like react or sevelt is a front end layer to interact with the data. So I don't see it ending developer jobs at all just making it more simple. Other jobs yes but not devs.

Library digitize all of the Library of Congress and have ChatGpt the user interphase for the content and books. So I think we are looking at a future we're AI is more the like AI in Halo
