More Chase customers lose money to ATM thieves using glue, 'tap' feature to steal

I never leave the ATM until the machine asks me "Would you like to do something else" at which point I would choose No and wait until it says "Thank you for your business" and then go back to the home screen. Then I walk away.

This is a problem that Chase could easily address. Knowing how this scam works, they could simply update the software to close out automatically once money is dispensed, making it necessary for you to have to tap again if you want to do anything else. This shows a lack of concerns for their customers.

  • @photonjones5908

    @photonjones5908

The software could simply limit cash to one withdrawal per tap. You wouldn't have to tap again to do anything else,, you would only need to tap again if you wanted more cash. That would solve this.

I had someone walk up next to me to use the ATM next to me, then pretended her bank card didn’t work. I was attempting to use Apple Wallet to withdraw money, and she grumbled about her card not working, and asked me for help. I pointed to the tap sign and ignored her completely afterwards. In hindsight, I suspect she went through all that because she wanted to get my PIN. But I wasn’t about to do anything while someone blatantly stood right next to me and staring at me. Be very careful about your surroundings and be weary of strangers. You can never be too careful.

It's the functionality of the ATM. When you insert your card, it gives your card back before it gives you the money, because too many people take the money they came for and walk off and leave their card. If you deposit, it often asks if you want something else, and most people take the withdraw last. But for sure, if you're too stupid or flustered to make sure it's asking for the next person's card before you walk off, well, ignorance is curable but stupid is supposed to hurt.

This is a UX issue on the side of Chase. The software is defective. When using the tap feature, every operation should be confirmed with a tap of the card, as there's no other way to verify that the person operating the device is the same one from a minute ago. Yes, that means at least two taps: one to wake up the ATM, one to confirm the cash withdrawal.

Crazy to think that a multi billion dollar bank chain didn't have the brains to realize that most people automatically presume that an ATM transaction is closed and finalized after taking their cash from the ATM. "Why would I steal my own money?" Actually, for somebody who works for a major bank, I have spoken to dozens of people in multiple departments who will try anything to take "free money". I have heard of it occurring when one individual makes a purchase at a store, for example, 200 for groceries at Walmart, and the next day they call and say that they didn't authorize said transaction and somebody "stole" their debit card but after investigations, you can clearly see them on camera make the purchase and lying about it. When we catch them lying about transactions that they did authorize but claim they didn't, we basically close their account and send them a check for whatever balance they had. It's basically telling them, "Take your money elsewhere. We don't want your business"

It certainly took these reporters long enough to get to the point. Early on they referred to thieves getting people to use the tap feature but I was wondering what that has to do with anything. How does using tap allow thieves access to a user's account? It was only at 2:30 when it was explained. This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time with the media. Either they relegate important information to near the end of an article or in some cases don't report it at all.

It happened to me last month , thankfully I tried to make the transaction while the bank was open. I was going on vacation so went to A T M out front of bank it said transaction complete but no money came out then a receipt that said technical problems , I immediately went inside of the bank and gave them the receipt that came out of the machine and I was escorted to their office and was told I couldn't take out the amount I wanted to withdraw and had to wait for security clearance from the main headquarters after waiting for an hour still no answers but was told to go ahead on my vacation and everything would be ok in a few minutes a hour later while I was on the road I got a call from the branch saying everything was ok my money was in my account. No! when I stopped and went to check into the hotel my card was declined and by that time the banks were closed so I had to sleep in my car I'm a 80 yr old female having to sleep in 100 degree temp in AZ untill the bank opened and then spent 3 hrs on the phone being put threw different departments before I was told to use my card again. I finally got my money but they put a hold on any balance I had in my account. Now my vacation plans were ruined and I turned around and had to go home. I went into the branch that screwd me over and said they had no control over what happened and couldn't use my account until it was resolved. Three days later my account was reopened. I was told I would receive a letter with an apology and the reason but a month has gone by and nothing from them. Not even on my bank statement does it show the transaction even being made. No apology for destroying my vacation and sleeping in my car or anything on my hard copy of that transaction appears. If I had the money to sue I would but at my age I'd probably be dead before it ever got settled. Closed my account today just another inconvenience because that was the closest bank to me other's are quite future to go if I have to do transactions and change all my personal accounts that had automatic payments coming out. Just a nightmare and so much stress.

I've never used the tap feature at my ATM luckily. This is a warning if the card reader doesn't work WALK AWAY!!! I also always wait until the screen goes back to its initial page & the light starts blinking once again (meaning beginning of a new transaction) even if the person behind me acts agitated like: "leave you're done". Nope not me I don't care I wait till the screen completely exits. Stay alert people!!!!!

It's not the fault of the NFC. It's the fault of Chase not logging you out automatically. It's safer to use NFC than to insert your card.

Yep, and the banks basically tell the victims "Oh well deal with it!", yet if their money was accidentally deposited into another customer's account, they'd be immediately on it. Rules for thee but not for me, I guess.

They have cameras at the ATM so they CAN see the victims did not withdraw all the money themselves. They have videos of the people that put the glue in and withdrew the stolen money. It's rather ridiculous for Chase to claim "how do we know you didn't withdraw it from your own account?". Because cameras, that is how you know!

Ultimately you can’t cry to chase to take care of you and your money. You have to do that yourself. Common ATM usage rule…. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER leave the ATM until you have your card back, you have your receipt AND you see the “thank you for your business” screen. And even then wait a few more seconds until you see it go back to the main screen.

Many banks’ ATMs allow you to do a “fast cash” withdrawal that automatically closes out the session after your cash is dispensed. I can’t believe that there are people who use an ATM forget to make sure their sessions are closed out before they walk away. For that, this should be a wake-up call for them to be more attentive when using the ATM.

It seems silly that people wouldn't wait to close out the withdrawal window. It doesn't need to be "tap to pay." ALL ATM transactions will be open to manipulation, whether card or tap, if you don't close out the transaction. For me personally, I would want a paper receipt of the transaction, too, which generally doesn't print until you close out. 🤷

It is totally a software usability issue and a faulty software design. When you are using the chip, your card is kept inserted until the whole transaction concludes. After you get your card back, you are guaranteed to be logged out of your account. When you use the tap method, it is much easier to forget or not realize that the account is still being open and walk away.

It's also why most ATMs will return your card before they give you the cash. The number of people who would take their cash and leave their card is astoundingly high.

@dancheb chase actually has you remove the card prior to getting the cash. You can further choose to have an email confirmation, printed receipt or make another transaction. Me, myself. I wait until the closing window chime. The only problem I have with chase is in how you can catch a pending transaction and they won't do any reversal until it goes through, then it takes at least 3-5 more business days for you to get your money back.

it's shocking how many people don't check to ensure their Session is Closed before leaving an ATM machine. The bank was being, lazy. They could have pulled up a video of the transaction. Most ATMs have a built-in camera. I used to sit in our lunch room and could see the customers face and the amount of the withdrawal on the screen. Since the manager knew the machine was glued up, she should've closed that machine down. Or either place a note stating the customer, using the tap feature, needs to complete their transactions when they see the screen stating, "Would you like to do something else?" They knew they had a faulty machine but kept letting customers lose their money.
