Hey Art, long time viewer. Thank you for the videos. Just noticed you updated this information. I was intrigued by how you are using the stericaps. From what I understand, they were designed to work with isopropyl alcohol which we all know is illegal in the states. I see you have not jumped on the checkvalve bandwagon as well. Can you tell me your reasoning for that decision as I have not either. Did you switch over to 5/16 drops? From my understanding, that was supposed to help alleviate the need for a check valve on 3/16. Thanks again!

The stericaps are used to soak the outside of the taps with the calcium hypochlorite solution. While we are pumping the solution we go down our lines and detap and place a stericap over the end, ensuring there is chlorine in the cap.

Do you still inject air or are you just using the pump for the liquid? Thanks!

We are no longer injecting air. If I had extremely high head we might try, but our pump is strong enough to pump the liquid unaided.

Does that brand hold an nsf label? I found another 73% calcium hypochlorite but it also does not contain the nsf label. It was all I could find locally

I do not inject air any more. The pump is capable of 100 psi. This amounts to an elevation lift of over 200 feet, and is sufficient for me to do my entire sugarbush. If I had higher elevations I might consider injecting air. Line cleaning is a work in progress, and as we learn we change.

Why did you stop using the air mix, I thought the pulsating action was a good idea, thanks

Does 200 psi blow caps off or taps out of tees?

What is the name/brand of the caps you are putting on the taps? Thank you! Dennis

They are called Stericaps and we ordered them from LaPierre.

Does the Calcium Hypochlorite affects the trees in a negative way, since the sanitizer is under pressure going into the tap hole of the tree before it is being pulled?

I have never seen any problem. The tap holes all heal well.

Hello - I'm new to maple syrup tubing systems and I'm considering using the 3/16 tubing to pick up natural gravity vacuum off from my hillside. Would you say that your cleaning technique has proved successful since implementing it? Also, in previous videos, I believe you mentioned some sort of a report to show your findings. Where can I find that report. Thank you so much!

At the moment there is no report, we have done a few articles in maple news over the years and hope to be working with a university in West Virginia to do further work on the system. But yes, the method is successful and you will need to implement it or something like it after the first year.

@@kruegernortonsugarhouse1012 Thanks so much for the reply. I really appreciate it. Glad to know that your cleaning system is successful. I’ve certainly heard mixed reviews on the 3/16. Everything from tees plugging, to the tubing flattening and restricting flow. I’m happy to hear that you’re still having good success with it. Thanks for leading the way on the 3/16 frontier :)

The woman uses a paper to check the liquid coming out at the tap, is that ph paper, where does one get it? Thanks

It is not ph paper, it is a chlorine indicator strip. The ones we use are by Hydrion in the 0 - 200 ppm range. The actual concentration we use goes to 400 ppm but these strips are sufficient. You can get them from Micro Essential Lab, Grainger, or any other similar website.
