Its like the end of an era. Morbid Angel in 2011 delivered an album many considered as a slap in the face. The review of it may be the reason that you and I are talking right now. But its 2017 now, and Morbid Angel has given us the long-awaited follow-up to Illud Divinium Insanus. What have the legends of death metal cooked up for us this time around?!

I still miss the production of Covenant 1993. Seems like so many bands put out their best production in the 90's and everything nowadays is either way over-produced or the opposite, trying to sound too dirty. But at least this sounds like a MA album.

Covenant has one of the best production jobs I've heard on a metal album, it's actually polished while sounding dirty and atmospheric.

I really like it. My one complaint would be the guitar is too low in the mix. You hear the presence of the guitar like the chug and all the other frequencies besides the actual notes, but the notes themselves are a little too muffled. You have to make an effort to really hear the riffs. It sounds better through headphones though which is my favorite way to listen to music anyway. Plus I like a lot of black metal from the 90s in which its waaay harder to discern whats going on so its hard to bitch about that. All in all its a good album and infinitely better than the last. So nice to know they're back!

I will probably be beheaded, but Formulas and Blessed are my favourites because of versatility, slow stuff, fast stuff, melodical, brutal. Brilliant! However, Altars and Covenant are solid and very good too.

Darryl Mouzone I agree, Illud Divinum Insanus is terrible, I regret buying it off iTunes, I didn't even put it on my MP3 player. But Kingdoms Disdained is great, I listened to it via Spotify and when I get the money, I'll buy the CD, not the digital copy off iTunes but the physical copy. I like it, and the 7 song.....EP of instrumental songs is pretty good too 💙\m/💙

I was happy to see your review almost immediately after the release. Took u a while to review new CC but that's cool. I've only listened to the album once in it's entirety. Beyond happy it sounds nothing like the the last POS, but I wasn't blown away either. I have faith it will grow on me. Usually albums I like off the get go fades quickly and the ones that take a few listens r the ones that tend to be better IMO. I'm gonna give it many more listens and come up w my final conclusion once I know the album. It's a death, black metal album all the way, just gotta get used to the new drummer. The guitars playing different riffs at once seems to be the Tucker era trend which is kinda hard for me to absorb. Like I said, I'm beyond psyched they went back to their metal roots and ditched the industrial crap. Piles of Little Arms is my fav soi far.

This album is a major grower ... it needs headphones as there are ton of great subtleties. I do wish the drummer would lay off the double bass more and let the songs breathe. There is tons of great stuff here though with hints of Altars of Madness and some elements even remind me of Portal?!?!

Compared to my disappointed for I.D.I, I like this album, and the 7 songs instrumental "EP?" is pretty good too. I'm a guitar player/song writer myself and it's really cool to hear instrumentals of songs, no offense to metal vocalists, but it's nice to hear JUST the music and not someome screaming and growling. I feel I have earned the "right" to complain/critisize since I'm 43 and have been listening to metal since I was 10 in '84. If I've only been listening to metal for a few years I wouldn't have the right or...."place" to judge/critisize metal, but I'm a 33year "veteran", play guitar, been in a few metal bands in which I wrote songs in their entirety AND I listen to quite a few genres of metal, and I'm EXTREMELY passionate about metal and have been defending metal since I started listening in '84. I've been carrying the metal torch and arguing with non metal fans for 33 years.

Many things went wrong with this album. Chief among them all is that Trey doesn't really sound like himself at any point. And the production does not do it any good. But it also has more than its share of good songs and some truly worthy riffs. Eventually the good outweighs the bad, but the album suffers from trying too badly to be a 'death metal album, not Illud'. Tucker puts on what just might be his best Morbid Angel performance, while new kid in the drums kicks ass. A good comeback, if not classic. Looking forward to a bright future for the Angel, once again. That's not bad at all.

C Varg Kühne and you're the death metal expert here? Lmao, the muddy guitar tone is obviously horrible in Kingdoms, which is sad considering that past MA LP:s had a clear and crushing guitar tone. Also all of the riffs ive heard so far are so generic that i would expect to hear them from your local tryhard MA copy band, not from MA themselves. In gateways they atleast had a dark atmosphere with Treys original chaotic riffs and flashy solos, while kingdoms is merely a reaction to the bad press of Illud.

And I thought Vader's early stuff was overtaken by the drum production, this Morbid Angel album is much worse. And I'm a drum type of guy saying this. Also, Trey basically makes Morbid Angel what it is, yeah I love Sandoval and Vincent's voice as much as the next person but it was always Trey's creativity that made the band stand out. It's really unfortunate that you can't hear anything from him on this so it just sounds like a generic death metal act. Is it heavy? Yeah, super heavy but heaviness by itself doesn't do anything for me.

But it's also important to not give a fuck, this is metal. Do you, just a suggestion. I'm just hearing the reflections and they're harsh at high volumes, but I have to turn it up a lot of the time because the audio isn't compressed and your voice's amplitude jumps all over the place, depending on how revved up you are haha

I agree 19/30 no more. This album does not even have an instrumental. Blessed Are The Sick is my favorite MA album and its variety makes it much better for me than say Altars. So with illud they went too far in the experimental direction. Here they went too far in just trying to sound like death metal. Good review though. Btw it took only one listen for me to figure out what the issues were.

How can you review a Morbid Angel album and not once mention Trey's insane guitar solos?? Oh, that's right, because the guitars are so swamped by the drums they are almost nonexistent on this album! And, Steve Tucker continues to be one of the more two-dimensional vocalists in Death Metal. And, where is the inspiration and experimentation that defined their early career? And, where are the crazy genius instrumentals? Almost every other studio album they have released is better than this.

I'm glad Morbid Angel went heavy again but, dude, the production on this album is complete garbage. The guitar solos are buried so far in the mix, you can barely hear them. The bass is all but missing too. All you can hear is the rhythm guitar, the drums and the vocals. It brought a tear to my eye when I saw Erik Rutan's name.

Right off the bat, who the fuck anticipated this album? Alters of Madness, perhaps one of the greatest masturpieces ever, remains the only album I need by Morbid Angel. This is slow, generic and uninspired.

No album of the year contender? To you maybe. That statement alone reminded me of why it's a waste of time to watch reviewers. This album is quintessential Morbid Angel straight through and is absolutely my album of the year. Most longtime fans of the band who actually know 2 fucks about their musicality are loving the album.

Andy O Brien granted the production is different but I don’t find it bad at all. Drums are sick and I hear the riffing just fine. As for the solos. No big deal for me solos don’t mean much.

Bland and generic. Sounds like a garage band trying to rip off Morbid Angel. To each their own I guess but Formulas was this bands last great album and Heretic was the last good one.
