    Funny fact: Mimas was discovered in 1789, but the crater "Herschel" which makes it look like Death Star was discovered in 1980, while Star wars came out in 1977. So Death Star didn't mimic Mimas, Death Star came first. Of course the crater is much older (around 4,1 billion years), but it's the discovery year that counts xD By the way, that crater is pretty serious: It's 139 km across, almost third of Mimas diameter. The walls are 5 km high, while deepest parts of crater are 10-12 km deep, it's deeper than Challenger Deep! Astronomers have no idea how the Mimas survived the impact of that size, it should have shattered into pieces. There are even stress fractures on other side of Mimas, result of shock waves the impact send through.

    Мимас состоит в основном из смеси льда и камней, являясь достаточно мягким космическим телом, при ударе метеорита о поверхность энергия удара поглощается рыхлым грунтом, поэтому на Мимасе относительно не широкие, но очень глубокие кратеры.

    Goes to show how the size of a object determines it’s shape. The larger they are, the more spherical. The smaller ones are all different shapes.

  • @topsecret1837

    @topsecret1837

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s not entirely true. There’s bigger objects than Mimas that aren’t spherical but elliptical like Lapetus. There’s also contenders smaller than Mimas for smallest body in hydrostatic continuum.

  • @jupiter_ios

    Haumea is the biggest non spherical thing also itd beacuse of gravity that makes them spherical

  • @BrettonFerguson

    @BrettonFerguson

    Жыл бұрын

    The more gravity, the more round they will be. But there are other factors like how rocky they are. Ice, liquid, and gas need less gravity than rock to be round. Centrifugal force from spinning also counteracts gravity slightly. Earth is slightly elliptical at the equator because of its rotation. There is Ceres, an asteroid in the asteroid belt that is 473 kilometers diameter (293 miles) that is round. It is considered a dwarf planet because it is big and round, not a moon because it does not orbit another planet, it orbits the sun, but has not enough size and gravity to clear other asteroids/objects from the area of its orbit.
