It’s amazing how small the Chicxulub asteroid was, not only in comparison to other asteroids and comets, but just how small it is in comparison to the planet, yet the amount of devastation it wrought upon Earth is just mind blowing. It’s just a rock in comparison to the size of the planet. It’s hard imagine the affect that a larger asteroid would have if it struck Earth.

  • @danielballard3364

Angles of strike and strike target are very important for the impact.. what made the Chixulub asteroid so fatal was it's near perfect strike angle and also the landmass it did hit.. had it hit in the middle of the Pacific or Atlantic the impact would most likely have been far lesser, still causing enormous tsunamis and pressure waves around the world but with far less dust and darkening of the sky and the follow-up effects.. just saying.. it's really not about the size alone.. even density of the asteroid material has a lot to say.. most are actually quite porous and not dense at all

CHicxulub is ok, but its not a planet killer. What made it devastating was it hit a sulfur acid depot. That means for weeks or months its rained sulphuric acid poisoning water and earth. Vredefort impact on the other hand would wipe the planet clean for life, maybe for good.

If one could be harnessed, it could be a great research platform. Including adding labs, housing and manufacturing etc. Cheaper to use what's out there for a base of operations.

Whoa. I came here to see the comparison between Tunguska, Chelyabinsk, and Chicxulub. Having seen tons of footage from Chelyabinsk, I was like, "holy crap, stories about Tunguska really weren't exaggerated!" And then Chicxulub comes along, and all the remaining wonder about how dinos finished 2nd to that thing vanishes pretty fast! I'm kind scared to continue watching now. lol 👀
