I know Mahershala Ali is getting a lot of credit for his acting, but people need to not forget to give credit to Andre Holland. I loved Andre Halland's acting in the movie.

To me he's the film's MVP, followed closely by Sanders and Rhodes. It's a shame that Ali, as solid as he is, got all of the attention.

Everyone is right but I'll butt in and defiantly say I think people are rly counting out Naomie Harris and to a point Ashton Sanders as well especially when they played the most emotionally traumatised / socially beleaguered characters. Not surprised but still disappointed. They were truthful, transparent, gorgeous, AND excellent while the others were excellent all by themselves, by all means

His portrayal of adult Kevin was refreshing... mainly because he came to a point in his life where was ready to “BE HIMSELF” and not worry about what everyone else thought of him. Kevin came to grips that he always LOVED Chiron and was finally ready to embrace it. The timing of the song “One Step Ahead” playing in the diner when their eyes met was brilliant.

Loved Moonlight and Holland was fantastic in it. Best movie of the year, in my opinion. I love what he said here too, right on point. I understand where our historical image of masculinity comes from, but Black communities still need to become more open about what masculinity is and allow personal interpretations of it to exist within our landscape. I grew up gay in a Southern Baptist household and, needless to say, I was so repressed and filled with self hate that I didn't find my way to coming out until I was almost 30. There's just no reason for that kind of shame to be heaped onto people at such a young age. It ruins lives and even ends some. It's past time for the Black church, in particular, to stop the ignorance. Also, if you haven't already seen it, check Andre out in The Knick on Cinemax. It's one of the best shows of recent years.

+Wolfpack That's the dumbest, most ignorant thing I've read today and given the level of inane stupidity on the internet, that's saying something! Just so you know, homosexuality has always existed across all cultures, even many members of the animal kingdom exhibit homosexual behavior. If you weren't so committed to such absurdly ignorant beliefs and were open minded, you'd know better. In any case, it is most definitely your right to be ignorant, even willfully so, but don't expect a lot of folks to validate your nonsense, in this day and age.

A PROFOUNDLY moving film! It deftly challenges the "performance of masculinity" we as Black males are called to enact...For many of us masculinity becomes a mask--a warrior's mask worn whether one likes it or not... Moonlight bears WITNESS to the discontents of this behavior and BOLDY offers an alternative that proves to be --at once--more balanced...

Masculinity in communities in the USA is different from how its viewed globally. Whats the real reason behind putting so many black Men in dresses and parading all over media? I don't see white Men being portrayed the same way. Same for black women in movies in lesbian roles. The black woman is always the aggressor in those roles. Wake up people.

Masculinity and sexuality are two different things, yet many people act out they think is expected of them.. In the 80's I went to a gay bar in Texas; I was just visiting.. Except for the lack of females.. I had no idea it was as gay bar.. All the guys acted like Broke Back Mountain.. straight, 'normal'.. etc.. In NYC gay men often think they have to 'flame' and act weird, and be a freak.. Personally I have learned that let people express themselves the way they want.. Hopefully along the way they will learn. I think this movie and how well everyone acted was great.. It had a lot of nuance, it didn't go for shock value. Andre you put it out there really well..

Thank you for revising religion and the church. Religion and 'the church' are different and have definitions.

For a movie that won the Oscar, I haven't seen the actors in any prominent films. It saddens me that these great actors are underutilized because of religion.

Great André, and great movie, but the end of the film was a little bit disapionting for me. And when I read the script it was that what I was missing. And I would like to asked André if it was a "bridge too far", for him and Trevante, to do such a scene as a straight man.

Great, great film. Relatable on so many levels. However, I never understood why many gay black men talk about masculinity being challenged in the black community as if that's not something challenged to all gay people once they reveal that they're gay. As a white gay male, I've felt compelled many times go prove my masculinity to straight guys who appear more "softer" than me. This isn't a race thing, rather, a gay thing. The gay community itself places such an importance on hyper masculinity.. idk! Sexy and intelligent man though

excellent. black men need to hear this perspective. homosexuality is such a scapegoat in the black community; it only does their own selves Injustice.

It was not about a romantic or sexual relationship between the two men. It was about 'Black' coming into being who he was trutfully and fully, which is who he was called to be. It was about him answering the question: "Who us you, Chiron?"

The substance of this interview sets forth a very different message from the homosexual role in the show, and from the agenda that wants to make black men wear dresses and accept men masquerading as women acceptable as women. Also, why is the black man and black woman always the poster child for these alternative lifestyles?

I agree... Us blacks are not going to make it. If we don't allow acceptance, repair, and growth in our communities. Men, if you are not clear-headed enough to lead, let someone who does take way. I'm getting sleepy thinking about this.
