BARRY JENKINS - With the team that made Moonlight | TIFF 2016

Фильм және анимация

See the full discussion post the premiere screening of Moonlight at 2016's Toronto International Film Festival with Barry Jenkins & Cast.
The second feature from writer-director Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy) follows its young protagonist from childhood to adulthood as he navigates the dangers of drugs and violence in his depressed Florida neighbourhood, in addition to his complex love for his best friend.
Intro by TIFF Artistic Director Cameron Bailey on Saturday, October 29 at 7:10pm!
Writer-director Barry Jenkins made waves with his 2008 feature debut Medicine for Melancholy. Not only did it give the hipster-romance-indie genre a much-needed shot of artistic vigour, but - unlike most of those films - it took place in an America where race and class are defining aspects of life. Now, Jenkins' sophomore feature Moonlight makes good on Melancholy's promise. This is an impeccably crafted study of African-American masculinity from a vital creative voice in contemporary cinema.
Though his story is set in Miami, Jenkins shuns the familiar neon-lit aesthetic that the likes of Michael Mann have associated with the Florida hot spot. Instead, he shows a different kind of life, miles away from South Beach, in an area hit by a crack epidemic. It's here that we meet young Chiron.
Bullied at school and beaten down by a harsh home life, Chiron risks becoming a statistic: another black man dominated and ultimately destroyed by the system. Despite his small stature and taciturn nature, Chiron is a survivor, and, as he grows, it becomes clear that his real battle isn't even on the streets. It's an internal one: reckoning with his complex love for his best friend.
Moonlight takes Chiron from childhood to his teens to adulthood, but it absolutely defies coming-of-age conventions. Instead of offering a clear progression of time, Jenkins plunges us into an atmospheric subjectivity, an impressionistic vision of Chiron's psyche in which sensuality, pain, and unhealed wounds take centre stage with staggering power.
Anchored in an unforgettable performance by emerging talent Trevante Rhodes (as the older Chiron), Moonlight explores the human need to feel connected. But although its themes could be called "universal," they are firmly grounded in a specific understanding of African-American experience. This film was waiting to be made, and Jenkins was the one to make it.

You know the thing that gets me EVERY fucking time about this movie. It's not just some kind of story that somebody invented for the "views". All of the actors and directors and producers gave us such a huge and personal piece of themselves, which makes them so incredibly vulnerable but which also makes this movie one of the best I have ever seen. And as a very privileged white woman it may seem like i cannot at all relate to this movie but that is so not true. I have dealt with so many issues that Chiron's dealt with and am just hugely grateful that this film breaks so many barriers and finally gives the marginalised people some representation. Films like this make me realize that we are hugely progressing at least in this industry.

Juan and Theresa were SOOOO vital in Chiron’s development... he truly needed SOMEONE in his corner to talk to and be there if he needed them to LISTEN. I love the fact that although Juan died, Theresa always stayed in Chiron’s life even in adulthood. She truly LOVED him and his mother later was grateful for her being there.

MsJilsephonie The beauty of Moonlight is it's not about race, gender, socioeconomic background, or sexuality; it's about being human. Everyone can see themselves in chiron(and other characters as well) at some point in the story. Like Berry always says "It's about you but it's not about you" and that's why I think it won Best Picture.

Though "down low" is a topic that has been discussed within communities for years.....a lot of time swath in shame and judgment. Same sex interaction came very natural for me. Include the fact that I grew up in a devout Catholic household, I was confronted with a loud "NO" from so called society, but, a "yes" from the magic and excitement that the two participants experienced. Hyper masculinity also complicates so much because of what so called "society" accepts. I make no apologies because it was as natural for me as heterosexuality may be for others.

I think the end does fill in the blanks, at least the blanks the film creates before the third act. Chiron had let society turn him into a cold, fairly unfeeling man who behaved and looked the part of a "man." But he called himself "Black," an affectionate nickname Kevin had given him a dozen years earlier, which suggests that even though he had changed his exterior, his interior was still holding on to the possibility of that affection with Kevin. Then, his mother opens up to him, apologizing for all the pain and hurt she caused him, and we see his emotions are still there, that he still has some "softness" in him. When he was a little boy, Juan told him that at some point, he would have to decide who he is ... and when he hits the highway to see Kevin, he's making a deliberate choice to reconnect with a part of himself he had repressed. The ending shows him making choice after choice to be Chiron again, to not care about being "hard", to open up to Kevin, to be vulnerable, to acknowledge who he really is and be comfortable in it.

I consider myself fairly liberal growing up as a "weekend hippie of color in a white upper class environment". I have/have tried a variety of different mind altering drugs, however, I returned and consider myself a marijuana user, with a very low tolerance. But one day, my liberalism was truly challenged when a friend of mine pulled out a crack pipe. Initially, I was intrigued when first told that it's like orgasming all over myself, HOWEVER, with a huge warning of instant addiction that frightened me. Cocaine came with a similar warning but my limited experiences with Coke has been mostly positive, but, with a take it or leave it end result. Luckily, "leave it" prevailed. Still, when my friend pulled out that crack pipe, I immediately drew a hardline "NO, NOT HERE". I soon learn my friend was indeed addicted even stealing $700 from my wallet. Crack is one drug, even more than heroin, that I just cannot condone.
