Thanks for the multiple mentions. This promotional film is like a psychedelic time capsule. Most people prefer the album version, which continues with an extended orchestral arrangement and a spoken word poem, but I thought the viewers would enjoy the music with the visual imagery. The song is about loving someone from afar but not being able to be with them.

I could not agree with you more James. This version is the band, unadorned. You can here Mike Pinder's brilliant Mellotron passages. This version is less cacophony and more soul. To my ears anyway.. I do recognize though the established version is an epic Masterpiece and my view is in the minority. RNB

Harri, each member of the Moodies played multiple instruments. Probably my favorite band after the Beatles. They garnered a few hits, in my book the radio stations did not play their best music. In the early 1960’s the air waves were dominated by BBC. They rarely played American music. There was a 100, 000 watt radio station out of Germany that played American pop , country , blues. The fortunate ones in UK could hear it late at night. Nearly all of the major rock band members , Beatles , Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton were touched by the music they heard. The port towns of the UK Liverpool etc became black markets of trade for American music 45’s. The sailors US and UK would bring the records to port and sell them. Members of The Who, Stones etc would hungrily purchase any American records they could. Mick Jaegar said of those times “ who ever had the coolest and most records from the states became the coolest kid on the block. These things launched the interest in the blues in Europe. Interestingly as young people across Europe were discovering classic American blues masters and country and western American teens showed little interest. The British Invasion of the early 1960’s turned American interest onto the long neglected distinctly American styles of music. You folks in the UK woke us up to our rich heritage and opened our eyes to the treasures there. Then you guys across the pond made it your own.

There is an extended version of this song that has a spoken poem at the end that kind of sums it all up. When looking at this song you need to take it in the context of the album as a whole. Days of Future Passed, is an album that charts a mans life across a day. In the process of talking of a man's life they finally reach the end, the "night", the white satin spoken of is not a bed sheet as some might think, it is in fact the lining of the coffin in which we lay at the end of life, an ending that goes on "never reaching an end". This song is actually the long lament of a man looking back on his life, regretting things he didn't do, chances he didn't take, particularly of never making known his love for woman he once knew. Now, back to that bit about the spoken lament at the end, the final five lines are the same that start the album, symbolizing that our endings are the same as our beginnings, or to put it another way, "ashes to ashes, dust to dust". For anyone who only knows the song, I recommend that at least once in your life, you take the time to take it all in, in full context of the entire album start to finish. It helps to put it all in perspective.

Sir, the extended version has a spoken word outro that you need to hear. Pure poetry, beautifully narrated. It MAKES the song. So poignant. Please, many people are asking you to do it. There’s a reason! : ) Let’s put it this way: I look for reactions to this song specifically to see their reaction to the narrated portion at the end.

the British invasion was all about bringing the Blues Back to America. The brit kids thought it ironic they loved it so much and when they brought it back to America no one knew is was American blues.. Howlin Woolf... Robert Johnson and all the great artist segregated form their audience by racism here. It took white kids from england to break that barrier with electric guitars and it didn't break enough so the punks tried even harder... people still don't know what a disservice racism has done for music lovers every where. Rhythm and Blues is the soul of popular music nothing will ever change that

Nights in White Satin is the climax of the album Days of Future Past. Listen to the whole album an it will give yopu more grasp of the whole. Justin wrote the song in a single day. His girl frind at the time had just broken up with him. As a parting gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. Hence the title, Prior to this album they used an instrument called a mellotron an orchestral feel to their music. Prior to the album their production company had hired an orchestra for another project that fell through. Someone got the idea to combine the two. While risky they decided why not give it a shot. Well lightning struck gold and history was made.Along with the album you might want to listen to the Royal Albert Hall concert of Nights. While years later the group hasn't lost a step. And while Justin's voice has the same qualities only fuller and more mature. I will warn you now that you have head the flute solo it will haunt you for the rest of your life. In moments of drifting you will hear it in your head and it will all come flooding back. I know I first heard it in 67 and it still happens.

Then go Irish--listen to some CLANNAD--Start with SIRIUS and then TURNING TIDE and SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN. Then off to Indonesia and ANGGUN--start with A ROSE IN THE WIND then try SNOW IN THE SAHARA, MY MAN, UNDRESS ME, and IN YOUR MIND. I don't think you will be disappointed..

This song is actually about the singer's love for Krishna! Yeah no joke. He is a baby boomer and his Pluto in Cancer shows the Moon disposits his Pluto and Krishna is actually the Moon in Vedic Astroligy - an incarnation of Vishnu, his 8th avatar. The Moon 's colour is milky pale white, like white satin streaking across the sky. Moon represents the night. Moon is very powerful in the 3rd house in Vedic astrology which deals with writing. Thst is why the singer talk about writing letters and never meaning to send. You know the baby boomers are very much influenced by Eastern religion, philosophy and spirituality. The thoughts that you have would determine the person that you are. That is the Moon the mind in Vedic Atrology. Letters are just the means to convey the truth that is in your eyes. Rukmani wrote Krishna some letters but she never really meant to see it because it would reveal too much of her feelings to Krishna. The white satin in the song is endless. The Moon represents the milky way. Rukmini is the reincarnation Lakshmi and Krishna that of Vishnu. And Krishna and Lakshmi is a pair of eternal consort in the Hindu pantheon of Gods.
