Montauk Rocks, Surf Fishing feature film.

Спорт

Five years in the making, at a cost of one drowned camera, one almost drowned cameraman, one blown transmission and two broken ribs, feature documentary "Montauk Rocks" is now available on KZread.
Completed in 2012 and initially released on DVD, this is the full 80 minute feature documentary film, "Montauk Rocks". A film chronicling the antics and aspirations of some of the toughest, most driven (some may say deranged) fishermen on the planet. Filmed during the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Striped Bass fall runs at Montauk Point, this film catches one of the last great marine migrations, as it collides with a migration of fishermen on the rocks of New York's "East End".
Here's what the reviewers have to say about "Montauk Rocks".
"Montauk Rocks is an artful and masterfully filmed documentary about one of the most iconic fishing towns in America. Whether you are an angler, a traveler or someone interested in the heritage of a great American seaside village you need to watch this creative and engaging film. Richard Siberry has hit a grand slam home run with Montauk Rocks. You will want to view this captivating film over and over again. It is that good. Bravissimo!"
Angelo Peluso
Noted angler, outdoors journalist and book author
"For decades professional film makers and television producers, from Van Campen Heilner to Jose Wejebe, have tried to capture the action, the culture and the aura of surfcasting in Montauk. But nobody has managed to do it as comprehensively or with such insight as Rich Siberry has done with "Montauk Rocks"."
Michael Wright, The East Hampton Press
"Montauk Rocks" is everything you'd ever want in a film: It informs, entertains and even breaks your heart. And if, after watching it, you do not have the sudden urge to drive straight to Montauk to fish, you do not have a pulse."
Monte Burke, staff writer, Forbes magazine, and author of "4th And Goal" and "Sowbelly."
ABOUT MONTAUK ROCKS
To many, the east end of New Yorks' Long Island is simply the legendary summer home of the worlds' elite, and those who aspire to be. As summer draws to a close however, and both the leaves and the mercury start to fall, those who came east to be seen are replaced by the legions who come to disappear into the night, and into the rocks, in pursuit of a trophy striped bass, and an even bigger fish tale. Richard Siberry's directorial debut, "Montauk Rocks" is a wild ride, an immersive experience, without getting wet, in Montauk's legendary fall run fishery.
Montauk surfcasters come from all walks of life, all occupations and all social classes. From past to present, the unique personalities who helped Montauk become, and remain, the undisputed "Surfcasting Capital of the World" give insight into what makes Montauk such a special place. Showing little respect for no parking or private property signs, Montauk's surf fishermen pursue their sport regardless of the changes taking place around them.
With the advent of the information age, competition for space on Montauks prime rocks rocks has increased, leading some anglers to don wetsuits and swim to offshore rocks where they can escape the competition. An elite (some say deranged) few have abandoned their stony perches altogether and simply drift along in the currents, several hundred yards off shore, in a practice known as skishing. Protected only by their wetsuits, and oftentimes in the dead of night, they float along, dragging their bait, in the place that produced the largest great white shark ever caught.
Montauk Rocks will take its viewers on an unforgettable journey with their own neighbors. A fringe society, which exists right in our midst, yet whose motivations, inspirations and adventures, are completely unknown to the majority of society. This is not your granddaddy's fishing. No heading down to the pond chasing bluegills and tommy cods. Fall surf fishing in Montauk bears little relation most people's concept of 'recreational fishing'. For some it's a one-time deal, for others, it's not only the fish that get hooked
Including a 5.1 surround sound audio track, featuring an original score by composer Jay Lifton, and music from Ireland's The Hot Sprockets, and blues legends Bob Corritore and Henry Gray, Montauk Rocks is more than just a fishing movie. Shot entirely on location in Montauk and New York City, Montauk Rocks speaks to the adventurer in all of us, and lets us know that the greatest adventures can sometimes be found right in our own back yard.

Thanks for making this documentary brings back great memories. My best friend, Paul and I would take fall trips out to the "mecca" during the late '80's and '90's for a week, after having done salmon trips in Pulaski previous years. There was nothing better, world class fishing but like fishing not everyday, you had your slow or dead days it's fishing! We would camp at Hither Hills and use the jeep at false (north) bar or the south shore working with the tides on the rips or "under the light." And yes with strippers the rougher the water (whitewater) the better for strippers. Jack Yee was a unique great guy and awesome fisherman, he actually lived at one time in his camper at north bar and used a mailing address of North Bar, Montauk, N.Y. so funny, he was great knowledgeable guy and is missed. And true about Marvin such a tragedy, there was a memorial for Marvin at north bar but over the years the nor'easter's eventually washed it away. One night I was at down in front of Camp Hero forget the name of that section (maybe the sewer, it's been many years) fishing around the rocks (I was a wader fisherman) and as it got slow, here came Jack walking up the rocky beach after having swam in from one of his rocks. I had landed 1 fish and not a keeper (36" was keeper size at that time after the moratorium had been lifted). Jack landed about 10 fish, but no keepers and was done for the night, a very good fisherman and out on that rock by himself. Paul was fishing with eels that night under the light, a couple of fish but no keepers. Some great times out there and some hard weather days out there, including those windy northern cold fronts. Under the light wearing your hooded pull over rain jacket you would bend your head down as a wave would crash on the rocks and spray you, by bending your head down the water would roll off your hood and you would stay dry, and you always needed corkers out there as all the rocks were slippery. Another great memory, I carried in the jeep a propane grill and there was nothing better then having fresh foil cooked small bluefish fillets right after a blitz for lunch! The Mecca!

One last statement: Hats off to some of the great men and icons that fished with Jack, like Big Bernie, Little Richie, Charlie aka Slim, Tricky Dicky, and the list goes on. And let's not forget the women who made sure that their men were all well fed and meals were ready for them when they came back from a long night of fishing........

Brings back fishing Montauk with my Dad in the 60’s. We had a grey Chevy Carryall with a white roof just like the one at 16:04 . My jaw dropped and I called out when I saw it, but it was just a little different. Ours had a tailgate instead of the vertical rear doors and no signal lights on the front fenders. Boy, this sure brings back memories.

I only go in waist high. I hear there are not as many Bass now but honestly I just love fishing in the surf so much I don't care too much about that. Hey if I get a fish its a bonus. What I have learned in my life is don't take anything too seriously just have fun.

I was out a few weeks ago surf fishing here on the Space Coast of Florida to check out the status of the fall bait run (pre mullet run). I had about a mile of beach to myself and it was an unusually calm morning. Nice pods of bait were in close and large tarpon with them. Beautiful site! My tackle was way to light for the tarpon so I was looking for small sharks, jacks, blues, etc. I'm casting and wouldn't you know it, ONE other fisherman shows up and casts right across my line. No big deal and it was a no harm no foul thing but I was amazed how courtesy is no where to be found when the bite is on.

I have great memories of fishing there 30 years ago mid 1990s every year. I was hard-core then. In the rocks at the light , turtle cove, browns. The good old days. Thousand dollar van staals, $500 custom rods. $800 in plugs in my bag. Lol. Now I couldn't. Im old now. I'll go back there this year 2022. I moved out of Florida this year and now I'm 700 miles closer. RIP Jack Yee. Didn't know him well but he taught me a few things about the place years ago from his ratty red blazer up in the parking lot. Good guy. Fantastic video. Enjoying every minute of it. I'm sure a breakfast in town this year will be $45. Lol. Worth it tho

I'm never going to be able to get to and fish Montauk, just turned 60 with physical limits, but just hearing these historical accounts direct from those pioneers is somehow satisfying. Great appreciation to all of them, those before them and those who will certainly be seduced into experiencing it in person.

The east coast fishermen are so lucky to catch big stripers. The west coast stripers are so small in the ocean. We keep 19 inch stripers. The biggest stripers 2021 10lb. Very few 20-30 lbs stripers nowadays. 1980-90s we regularly catch 20lbs stripers. California officials had destroyed the stripers and king salmon fishery.

I agree 100% . I’ve been fishing California for stripers since early 1960’s with my brother and dad . 3 fish limits of 20-25 pounds was a typical day . Fish of 30 lbs plus was no big deal . So terrible how incompetent, corrupt , California politicians and officials destroyed the fishery out here .

Pretty remarkable that for decades the sums of large fish netted, pole & reel caught. Incredible fishery. However, how could anyone not think that all of it would come to and end? The fact folks were willing to wipe out the fish 🤦🏽‍♂️… but folks had families to feed, mortgages to pay etc; I get it. I remember my father Talkin bout the moratorium in the mid 80s he was a serious canal fisherman , I wasn’t fishing like him back then. Today , I’m getting more & more into it. I hope that my kid & everyone else’s kids can enjoy such a wonderful sport. Let ‘em go, let ‘em grow.

I used to drive out there years ago from NJ, sometimes to work but always to fish. I would purposely carry my bright orange bucket with Googan written on it and oh boy the sharpies would be pissed. Paul was one of the guys that turned me on to using wet suits

This was movie was agreat watch😃 I live in the north of New zealand mostly do rockfishing fish every weekend love the big storms in the winter target big snapper that come in to fatten up before heading to deeper water in late spring well alot do😀 we had a fishing comp that used to run up here and I had the same idea as the guy at the end to try and get out further as in swimming out to close islands or rocks I was allowed cos they had a boat section and a shore section I wanted to stay in the shore section they said as long as I was swimming and not in a craft I was fine I never got the chance when the comps came up cos the swell would be over 2meters and or couldn't get people keen enough.lol. good to see keen anglers on this movie tryna step it up no way should they have said no to going out into the water like that not like you were in a boat🙄🙄 our fish stocks are still good but no as many big fish about these days. A good channel to watch is-- The lateral line. If you wanna see awesome new zealnd fishing from boat and some shore stunning scenery as well😀

I'd love to fish NZ. These videos don't do it justice up there. The guys who are throwing baits usually need 8-10oz sinkers on the good days. Those fellas who take a swim to get to their rocks have some huge balls. That outside of googans crossing your line, that sweeping current that's most dangerous aspect of that area. Skishing is something only experienced guys should go after. + it's a white shark pupping ground, so. , , ya know. big old knocking balls on that lot of gentlemen.

@@vincentlafranchi8409 yeah I need to get a you tube channel up and running. I've fished so much of our coast up here around where I live one area I go all the time has amazing scenery and a good amount of fish at this of the year being early winter. We have so much coast line to fish pick the right time and you won't see anyone let alone a boat insight😀

After that we spent every weekend and eben some school nights on that block till the moratorium of 85.

I'd love to talk to one of these guys. I grew up fishing the Hudson river in April and May. I don't even bother telling some of my fish experiences because most people would think I'm exaggerating. Like everyone I've had 12-14 hour days trolling drifting and not had a hit. I've also had many 50-100 fish days. Back in the late 80s early 90s the striper fishing was world class. An old man taught my dad and he taught us. I was 8 years old when we started and back then we were clueless, I remember trolling down near Poughkeepsie in the main channel and we snagged channel cats. Anyways we eventually moved north to staatsburg and Kingston. Listen the fish prove to me over and over that they are smarter than me. I recently had a nice one roll on me and spit the hook. I was upset but I told the old man fishing next to me that times like that is what keeps me fishing

That is becausr they stopped letting peoplr keep them after they nearly went extinct in 1980. Luckily the regulations are tightening and now in NY only 1 fish can be kept, between 28 and 36 inches. And smaller or larger must be returned. Between that and stopping omega protein from having free reign on bunker netting things have gotten much better (they wiped out 3/4 the population in just a few years during the fish oil craze circa 2012) So the fishing has been improving agaun
