Montana Backroads: Overland Adventure into the Upper Missouri River Breaks
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this episode, we are in Big Sky country exploring the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. This is a place where the Missouri River carves through the Great Plains of Eastern Montana.
After a night of camping at the James Kipp Campground and an incredible sunset, we make our way west to meet up with the McClelland Stafford Ferry. This stretch of trail is part of the much larger "First Nations Adventure Trail" which starts in Michigan. The ferry crossing is simple and free, but tips are appreciated.
Along the trail we viewed pronghorn antelope and a large herd of elk. The trail was easy but long, so be prepared for long stretches along the way.
We enjoyed this stop for Montana Camping and it was an adventure crossing the missouri river. This area is a bit out of the way, but worth the detour if your ever in the area.

I was on my way from MN to Glacier National Park in MT (July 2024) and after watching this video decided to take a detour to make the long drive more fun. Stayed at James Kipp Campground off US 191 and started the drive from there to Knox Ridge Road -> Lower two calf road -> DY Trail -> Ferry crossing. Lower two calf road was the most fun drive I had. DY trail is a very flat and smooth dirt road so that section was boring. It got a little more interesting after the ferry crossing. Did it in my 2019 VW Atlas stock except Rim (changed from 20" to 17") and tires (245/70/R17 AT). The car was fully loaded with family of four, camping gear, 20 gallons of water etc. Thank you @SixOverland for this video while I wait for crazy prices/interest rates to cool down so i can afford a decent off-road vehicle.

So glad we were able to help you get out there! Sounds like an amazing trip with the family! Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing your story! God Bless and safe travels!
Nice video! Haven't been in that area since the early 70s! The other two active ferry crossings in Montana are the Carter and Virgelle. While growing up in NE Montana, there was one more ferry crossing on the Missouri, just a few miles from I lived. It was the Poplar Ferry (aka, The Pride of Poplar). That Ferry was replaced by the Poplar Bridge in 1968. As a youth, I had the pleasure of crossing the Missouri on all 4 of these ferries. Thanks for the memories!

What a great video!! In the fall just across the river from the James Kipp campground you can visit Slippery Ann where the Elk will be bugling. We try and go every year and take a picnic with us for an all day adventure watching the elk.

That’s got to be a sight to see! We may have to make plans to see that someday. Thanks for watching!
Yet another well-done video! I just recently found your channel and became a subscriber, and what a pleasant surprise to find you navigating one of the routes I created: The First Nations Adventure Trail! It can be hard to do justice to the sweeping vistas and wide open spaces of this trail, but you definitely nailed it! For others who wish to follow parts of this trail, Google will lead you to the files! Be safe, and Tread Lightly! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

That’s amazing! Thanks for putting the trail together! What a great section for sure. Hopefully one day we’ll be able to venture across the entire trail! Thanks for watching and for the subscribe, truly appreciated!
Spent years driving in the area north of the river if the mud doesn't get you the snow will.

@@SixOverland, I've been to Montana about 3 times but not with my jeep yet. I want to find trails close to the North Dakota/Montana border for now. Hopefully this summer I can do that.
Hi Bryan!
I want a ov3rlanding trailer like yours for my jeep tj. Since I got my jeep my wife is hooked. She wants a jeep now . We love to camp. Might get me a trailer and make my own overlanding trailer with roof top tent . I want to overland Montana and Wyoming both.

Glad we can provide some inspiration! Old military trailers work great for a base platform, just gotta keep the build under tow capacity, but lots of options out there. Good luck and thanks for watching!

We’re geared at 4.88 on 35s. When towing we’re probably at 12 on the highway and 9 or 10 on the trail at the worst. We measure by smiles per gallon though ;) Thanks for watching!
