Langur Monkeys come down to Drink on a Hot Day

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

It was the middle part of the day and getting hot when I saw this troop of blond-tailed langurs in Kaeng Krachan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน). They were feeding on the ground close to one of the streams here, and I thought that there would be a good chance of filming them drinking; something I had wanted to do for a long time. Sure enough, whilst filming them feeding on lush leaves close to the stream I noticed several individuals drinking but I was always too late to get a good shot. Eventually, I had the camera on one male langur as he approached the water, and I got some nice film of him drinking. A very happy experience for me.

Note that the link for this species in Thailand is somewhat outdated. Until recently this species throughout its range in Thailand was known as Trachypithecus obscurus (variously known in English as spectacled langur, dusky leaf monkey, spectacled leaf monkey) but has now been split into four sub-species here in Thailand. Those individuals found in most of the Thai peninsular, including Kaeng Krachan are assigned the name T. obscurus flavicauda with the English name being blond-tailed langur.

Yes. I actually film langurs more often than macaques. Did you see the other clip of the youngster falling out of tree right near a newborn baby?

Thank you so much. I'm really happy you enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun to film. It's quite rare to see langurs coming down to drink, but it was a very hot day so I just took a gamble that they would come to the stream...... and they did. Bingo!

Lovely footage, and great to learn a new term "Allomothering". I've seen the behaviour plenty of times in these langurs, but wasn't aware that there was a term for it. That will no doubt help further researching the behaviour online.

Thanks Ton... Yes, it is a peculiar term, but a very handy one to know. There are related terms as well, such as alloparenting, that includes all genders, and can be parasitic, like brood parasites, as well as mutually beneficial. This behaviour in langurs was one of the possible stories that I discussed with the BBC a while back.... but all that seems to have gone quiet now.

Yes, indeed. Although they have been split into four sub-species they are still commonly called spectacled langurs. Thank you so much for your comment.

Sadly, there are two langurs on one of the awful channels. I don't know what type, but they look quite exotic, as well as bewildered and afraid.

@@thailandwild4897 They are kept with two macaques, but seem much more fragile and withdrawn than those. They are a pretty silvery grey colour, and no spectacles. I keep meaning to check out what kind they may be.

Thank you, Lucy. No, I haven't been there. To be honest I rarely travel outside of Thailand, and when I do, I generally need to go back to the UK to visit my father. I did at least manage a visit to Monkey World near where he lives in Dorset a few years ago. There is still so much of Thailand that I haven't seen that I don't really think about the other SE Asian countries around, but I have just looked Deo Tien up online, and it certainly does sound interesting. Have you been there?

Oh. I am sorry to hear that Lucy. Hopefully, I can find lots more interesting wildlife for you to watch on the channel. Incidentally, on the same day as I recorded these langurs I also go a lot of film of stump-tailed macaques feasting on a fruit tree in the morning. I will post that video soon.
