Monitoring global supply chains

In today’s global supply chains, the manual production of goods is often done in countries that don’t have the capacity to regulate and ensure the safety of factory workers. Yet, while brands outsource production, they can’t outsource all of the risk of the conditions of production. Many brands now often hire social auditors to assess factory conditions. Professor Mike Toffel’s research explores what brands and managers can do to ensure a non-biased auditing team and process.

In general, what is the impact of successful remediation of abuse in a global supply chain on a company’s profit margin? Can their products stay competitively priced/ can their brand keep growing if they eliminate the dark underbellies which once sustained their low-cost efficiency? Automation seems to be the new paradigm for the ethical dilemmas of globalization it seems-how does HBS feel about this?
