Thank you for making this video! I am curious about grocery stores such as Aldi that have lower prices, and generally how the business strategies of different grocery stores influence their supply chains. And I'm curious about "international grocery stores," which in my experience seem to have an even greater variety of foods than a typical grocery store. I think the global supply chain probably hurts a lot of farmers and the environment, but the consumer doesn't see it so doesn't feel bad about buying something. I wish I could trace back every food I ate to the person who grew it. The cost of food probably needs to be increased to reflect it's environmental impact and to pay fair labor. Just my uninformed ideas!

Thanks so much for this comment! We just had an Aldi open close by and I have been wondering the same thing! The food supply chain in general is definitely not perfect. But I like to think it's improving every time consumers learn more about where their food is coming from. We call can always do our part!

Great video. The pandemic greatly affected the supply chain which is a big reason for an increase in price of food. Paired with inflation, the amount of food you can buy has also decreased. I was hoping for an answer about the seeming decrease in quality as well, but that may just be where I live and my specific grocery store, and its own supply chain--multiple factors which I believe are there but I couldn't tell you specifically which ones. In Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken, Morgan Spurlock documents the processes farmers use in chicken production and how important labeling food certain ways can help increase sales. For example, free-range has a legal definition that can be applied, ironically, to crammed warehouses of chicken with a small patch of land as long as it falls within the parameters of the definition. It wouldn't be surprising to find out that many farms use similar, if not worse, corner-cutting methods for various products as the pandemic and recession has made labor processes much more difficult and more expensive. In the documentary, you are shown why farmers are under increasing amounts of pressure by an agricultural monopoly that sacrifices things such as quality and health, and so they end up having to follow suit and resort to worse methods so that they can save money and stay in business. The farmers with healthy processes are barely breaking even and farmers compete against each other in a tournament system. There is a real, no joke, National Chicken Council. It was a good movie and I think everyone who liked this video should watch it as there is a good bit of food supply chain education in it.

Great work. I'd like to see you point out more of the flaws with factory farming.

Thanks! I think there is a huge debate on factory farms, both great points and some bad. Farms, no matter their size, can be ran efficiently using great technology and produce a ton of goods with the farmer also caring for the land/animals/etc. I do think there is a critical mass that farmers can get too where it becomes too hard to manage everything in a decent manner.

This is very interesting.. thanks. Personally I think the food supply chain has got out of hand ..mainly because people have been spoiled by being able to get what they want when they want so they expect it always. Also the variety and choice is simply gross and out of kilter with sustainable production. Back in the day (I’m 78) the only goods you bought from a supermarket were things you couldn’t get locally. Barcodes changed that and put the power in the retailers hands, and every producer had to compete to get their products on the shelf.. advertising became an industry .. packaging became a big time earner .. novelty became like fast fashion .. and wastage became the norm. Crazy man crazy.. as the song went! Where I live in a west coast drought prone area of South Africa, Big Agri has moved in, has drained dry our RAMSAR wetland, dammed up 4 river catchments, and is mining ancient water to grow export fruit for the USA and China. We never see any of it. Does the world need it ? .. I doubt it! The system needs a reset. Maybe the pandemic has triggered that 🤔🇿🇦

Hoping that more consumers learn that they can really control the system based on their wants. Maybe if we all just try to buy local, we can somehow fix the system!

Great question! Trade refers to companies that deal in trading goods. Think of it as Wal-Mart or other stores buying produce and selling in stores. I definitely should have used a different word or explained it better in the video. 😂😅
