Moncler Jacket Review - Is It Worth It?

More of our IS IT WORTH IT Series, here: • Is It Worth It? Men's ...
00:00 Introduction
Moncler is intentionally bold in an area where usually navy and black solid dominate the landscape. Moncler jackets are known for their down filling which is very puffy and very insulating and warm. On their website, they claim to have a superior expertise in the down realm.
Moncler Quality Hallmarks
04:06 DIST Certified
That’s a protocol that claims to trace traceability quality and origin of the down. Interestingly, the trade market DIST is actually owned by Moncler so it’s not an independent agency but it’s their own quality control seal, therefore, the quality claims of the down is actually certified by a subsidiary of Moncler and not by an outside third party.
04:38 710 Fill Power
This means as much as the volume occupied by the down feathers. An object with a higher fill power takes up more space meaning more air is trapped and therefore, the jacket is more insulating. Essentially, it means that you get more warmth while maintaining the same weight.
07:18 Nylon Shell
One of the iconic things of Moncler. It’s a very dense nylon that is extremely lightweight and only weighs in at 33 grams per square meter. It’s also woven in a very fine way so you don’t end up with feathers or down poking through the shell. This high density lacquered nylon that is shiny is something that is pretty unique to Moncler and not many other brands use it. So if you would like it, it’s a strong reason to invest in the Moncler jacket.
08:50 Boxy & Simple Fit
It’s quite boxy and simple and it makes you look like a Michelin Man. The sizing is quite strange, they use a numbering system and the jacket I’m wearing here is size 5 even though that corresponds an extra-extra-large, we would say it’s more like a large to extra large in other brands.
09:20 Barcode On The Inside Jacket
Because Moncler jackets are so expensive, they’re faked all over the place and in order to verify that you have a genuine product, Moncler jackets have a barcode on the inside jacket. You can simply scan it with a scanner app which gets you to a website and once you sign up, it’ll tell you what name the jacket should be and what style and if it’s a different style, you know it was copied and it’s a fake or if the number is wrong, it will just tell you to get in touch with support and you know what’s wrong or a fake, as well.
So with a company with its origins in France that moved to Italy, where are the jackets made? According to the label, they’re made in Romania which is definitely one of the lowest cost production countries in Europe with a GDP of under 10,000 dollars per capita.
10.25 Lightweight
It doesn’t tell you exactly how heavy it is but our jackets are really lightweight, just take a look. So if they’re lightweight, do they keep you warm?

OK, I can actually think of a good reason why they may have gone with the cheaper plastic zippers, rather than metal. If that nylon gets snagged in the zipper, a brass zipper will just shred it to bits. But a nylon or plastic zipper may not damage that outer shell too much, if at all. And I'm pretty sure that if you end up damaging that outer fabric, the jacket is trashed.

  • @Rysich608

I’m not sure, but I think it is made for cold environments, for example here in Canada if you try to zip up your jacket in -40 then it might be very uncomfortable if you have metal zipper, so the plastic one is better.

I remember in the late 1970's, down jackets in California were the rage, especially among high school-age teenagers. One brand of down jacket that was popular with teenagers that reminds me of Moncler was a brand called "Down Jones", it was a navy colored down jacket with ultra glossy nylon material, like Moncler. Down jackets popularity faded starting in the early 1980's and seem to have made a comeback.

It's ALL about that little label.... But, personal experience - I got a competitor jacket made by Herno, another expensive Italian brand that does lots of down jackets and it turned A LOT worse. They had 100% down vs. Moncler's 90% and they were lighter but the issue was the shell. The shell and stitching were subpar and after about one season of wear, I saw down sticking out at a few places and one of the puff panel had a tiny hole... My Moncler is perfectly fine after 3 years of wear - no down sticking out, no holes, the puffiness is still perfect.

Some facts and reasons out there that were missed: -Plastic zippers are used more often on lighter weight puffer jackets because even though nylon shell is relatively tear resistant, metal zippers that get caught on the fabric are more likely to tear the fabric like a knife once they snag on and picture the fabric. Secondly it's also because metal zippers are heavy and stiff and won't feel comfortable and balanced if the rest of the jacket if lighter than the zipper. -there are fill counts at high as 1000 fill that are sold commercially from brands like Mount Bell and Rab and they are usually flagship class jackets.

I also have a North Face Gortex shell and 300 weight Fleece Jacket, that I bought many years ago (it cost me $500 for the two) and it is too small now (so that is why I got cheaper option this time around). I bought a lightweight Moncler jacket. It doesn’t seem possible to be warm but it is. I don’t think it’s filled with down, I think it’s filled with magic. Fit and finish are amazing, totally different level of build quality. That being said it’s ridiculously expensive but I love it. Kind of like having a super model girlfriend.

Everyone has to stick to their own budget, but I feel its worth it and the down is a superior product. I have the acorus, which is a more light weight style, and I find it more functionally warm than much bigger puffier down jackets from brands like Patagonia. I don't care for down jackets for fashion statements, I think its just better at keeping me warm without having to wear something bulky

Although I wouldn't ever wear one even if it were given to me, I would at least say that they do have a bit of a distinctive, rather than just saying "looks like a garbage, lol". They do have 6 main "squares" on the front that are neatly spaced, separated by a cheap, albeit classy zipper on the black version. Like a lot of products in high-end fashion, they had to take a stand and settle their identity on a design that can be recognized from miles away. In that regard, they did it right. Just my two cents on this design, I'd be glad to hear about your opinion on this. By the way, very professional review, thank you for staying objective.

I would opt for the northface although I really like the brand mammut . not only, because these brands do produce for expedition gear and therefore have a lot of experience and customer feedback, also because I do mountaineering up to 4000 m or just climbing in winter and such a warm jacket is esp. needed in the camps (not that I am good at it. just get dragged by friends :-) ). if the style is ok and there is really one of those rather rare really extreme cold winter in Vienna, one can wear it too. but the reason why I would choose the northface is a bit different. this brand has a good selection of coats and jackets, that totally are dayware and not sports ware. what they did, they transferred their knowhow into regular fashion outfit. I do have a good coat now, but if I would have to buy a new one, I would choose from this brand. my sister got one last year. it looks like a regular coat/long jacket but it is incredible wind resistant. I once had to walk on a rather huge parking place to her car in cold windy weather. I think it took us about 3 minutes and I almost couldn't get air while she meant, it is rather warm considering the wind :-D I didn't understand what she was talking about until we both realized that she couldn't feel the wind on her body at all. even her hood did brake the wind a little that came from the side. she didn't feel the full wind in her face too. that coat was new and she didn't realize herself how insulating it was. the zippers are also great. her coat was not cheap but by far not that expensive as moncler. her's is longer and I remember it was about 300,- but she got 20% off. first she was shocked about the price. she took it, because it seemed to be the best she tried that day and had no hope of finding a better one. now we both know, where we will get the next jackets and coats. of course, if they have something in our sice

@@Marc-zi5cq yes. and you know, these companies are experts in providing equipment and cloth for real mountaineers or pro expeditions. they know, what they are doing and if you like hiking or trying something out in the himalayas - you can use them that way as well (at least those items, that are not specially labeled as regular outer wear but really as mauntain equipment. but the fashion ones are better as well, as for the most part, the used technology is the same.). where the other rather fashion brands are either far too heavy or not designed to protect you better in all conditions. this is my experience. I have friends, who wear their maintain equipment in the winter as well. and I have friends, who choose brands like mammut, North Face and such, but from their regular cloth lines for the live in the city. I see both and I find, they are fine. one can always have in addition a classy regular winter wear for a day out anyway. in extreme weather it should not matter - at least, this is how I see it.

Backpacking and mountain climbing are kind of my things. That being said 710 is an awfully low number for a jacket of that price. Even Northface uses 750 in most of their jackets. You are right though, most companies don’t use higher than 800 in large batches. My sleeping bag is 950 fill power and is responsible sources from ducks. As an outdoorsman, I always thought that normal people wearing down jackets just looked like posers. Frankly there are better jackets for everyday than down, I don’t wear mine day to day. Bought two in a day, one for myself and one for my wife. An expensive day out to say the least. Managed a micro tear in mine after wearing only a couple of weeks. Store feedback was that's bad luck nothing we can do. Credit to the jacket, really caught it badly and to only leave an extremely small tear was a miracle. Moncler's most popular shiny pieces seem to be a love it or hate it type of deal. Looking through the comments theres no in between lol. Personally I really like them, obviously you're paying for the brand more than anything but I've never had an issue with quality and although the nylon seems thin and fragile it does hold up to years of wear. As far as the trimmings go, I have been way more impressed with moncler's than other similarly priced brands. The full metal zips on my burberry have shown more abuse than moncler, and I wear my jackets often. You could always go Canada Goose, but I'm just more partial to moncler, and see CG as more of a trend. To each their own. Of course there are jackets that do the same thing for less, but I personally love the shiny, 'trash bag' look, and the brand's heritage. No luxury brand is worth its price ever in terms of functionality but if you have the money and are comfortable with the price, why not buy what you like? Good review
