Today, you can find this check plastered all over sneakers, handbags, scarves, and even overcoats. In fact, you can even find shirts, wallets, and shorts in a Nova Check plaid. While the Burberry check used to be a hidden detail on the inside that wasn't visible to the wearer, it's now on the outside and it's screams to everyone "look at me, I can afford this. That being said, the" classic Burberry scarf with a Nova Check is one of those items that could still be worth having in your wardrobe because it's such an iconic design and a quality item that is so small that it's not like plastered all over your outfit.
As we always do, we wanted to buy the most iconic and traditional version of the scarf, that meant a classic pattern in their archive beige colorway. Turns out, what Burberry calls the classic check is, in fact, an oversized check that is very popular and comes in 33 different colorways including the archive beige. What we want, though, is something more appropriate for gentlemen, it is called the classic vintage check. Unfortunately, that one only comes in nine colorways, not including the archive beige so we picked a scarf that was as close to that color as possible which is called Antique Yellow.
So what does good quality cashmere look like? Actually, you can learn all about it in our cashmere explained guide video here. In a nutshell, a quality woven cashmere scarf should not be stretchy and once you pull in another direction, it should spring back into its shape. Also, higher-quality cashmeres usually come in a tighter weave. That being said, if we're testing the Burberry scarf for those two things, it passes with honors. It's a very densely woven cashmere, it springs back into its original shape.
So with that being said, is it worth it buying a Burberry cashmere scarf? First of all, I think scarves are fantastic products for cashmere because that's where you need the warmth, that's where you enjoy the softness and unlike a cashmere sweater, you don't really have to worry about friction and pilling because you just don't get that when you wear it around your neck. Now, for$470, you get a high-quality cashmere product made in Scotland at a high level with lots of hand labor involved. It will likely last for years to come and if you consider the cost per wear, it's not that big of a deal. If, for some reason, you don't like it anymore, chances are you can resell your Burberry cashmere scarf for a much higher value than regular cashmere scarves in the market. That being said, there are lots of fakes out there and people might think you're selling them a fake unless you have the original purchase receipt and all the tags still on there but when you wear it, I don't like having these big tags on my scarf. So if you want to take them off, maybe take a video of them, in case you ever want to sell the scarf. Even though the quality of the cashmere is extremely high, I really dislike the dimensions; 160 centimeters or just 66.1 inches are simply too short in my book.
Personally, I think a classic herringbone pattern is better suited for a classic man's wardrobe than this Burberry check because it's almost like a brand name like a big H from Hermes or a Gucci belt tjat just screams look at me I can afford this expensive product. However, if you're watching this video, chances are you like the pattern of a Burberry scarf and if that's the case, I think the scarf can be worth it. You're getting, after all, a high quality product and it's not more of a ripoff in vinyl like, for example, that Louis Vuitton.

Honestly, I think if someone buys it in another color, nobody would think twice about if it was Burberry or a regular scarf But, I think if you own a Burberry trench, the scarf just looks really classic with it & I will never dislike that combo. The colors perfectly match a camel coat for a reason

In the other colourways the proportions of the check pattern are the same, it's still very recognisable to people who like heritage or luxury clothing. I guess for the wider public they only would notice the classic colourways but they'd probably associate it with chavs

I have to say Raphael, your videos are extremely well researched; it is obvious a great deal of time and effort go into your productions. I have learned a great deal from you over the last two years about Men's Fashion, History of Clothie ie. Seersucker, and how to properly wear a Cumberbun. I discovered your online presence one Saturday morning while searching out how to properly wear a Polo shirt. This lead to my viewing most all of your videos, which opened up for me, a whole world in updating my wardrobe and properly dressing. I very much appreciate all I have learned from you and I know, you are definitely leaving your mark upon this world. For this I am most grateful.

Incredibly informative. Thank you for this information. I’ve had my vintage Burberry “muffler” scarf from 1999. And I still wear it every season. Have never needed to change it, as it is still with me, never an issue. However it does smell it’s age. Even after dry cleaning. Mostly just stagnant, or dusty. It is still the best piece of clothing I have ever purchased. Would like to get the large Burberry Check scarf. Charcoal grey with red pop for contrast

That was some great sleuthing finding out where the scarf was made! A very interesting video. I agree with the problem of the length of the Burberry scarf! Very few scarves are that short and limiting. It's almost as if they are cheaping out on the length just because their brand name is iconic and people will pay the big price for the name. No matter how useless the scarf will become.

I am also being reminded of how an employee complimented my long, colorful scarf one day. It was a handmade Doctor Who scarf I was wearing:

@@stevenabosh8807 A scarf retains a practical use and will likely continue to do so in cold weather. Not every jacket does the job well because it might not have a high enough "collar" that extends around your neck. For those jackets that simply don't, you use a scarf. I reckon in some or many situations, a scarf is a better complementary option because having that bigger collar on jackets could be annoying or hindering at times. What if it gets somewhat warmer depending on the environment? A scarf, you can then take off. Also, I reckon some do not wear jackets but coats or such instead. And I don't recall coats with a huge standard high collar that would then do the job well functionally - while it might look off in a fashion or style sense. As we can see with both examples, a scarf is useful.

This is the kind of thing I would totally get at thrift store price, but otherwise it just seems like nothing other than a "yes, I have tons of money" statement piece, like with the Louis Vuitton bag. There's a kind of store here called "European clothing" which is basically 2nd hand/off-season clothing from abroad and I've actually got a couple of excellent pieces, once with a Belstaff for $5 and a second time with a Burberry women's coat for$25. It was my first time even seeing the brands, and for both, I was actually baffled at the retail cost once I looked them up.

Okay, you can't get the "Burberry check", but the Johnstons scarves have the advantage that they don't suffer from the "Burberry image issue", a.k.a "The Chav Effect".

Yes. I just think that classic style marks should remain in their branch and street wear designers/marks should make their thing. Maybe in some cases, the combination of those two views on style can make something interesting looking. But I would say this doesn’t happen very often and neither classic style nor street wear marks should sacrifice their main products to look “younger” or more “elegant and classic”.

man I bought one (similar to the Archive Beige... slightly lighter from fading) through my regular vintage clothing source for $50AUD ($35 USD) almost flawless despite being vintage (the vintage dealer also acquired a very large collection of other "three B's" stuff from the same estate - Burberry, Barbour and, Belstaff but most of it was the wrong size and/or had been worn almost to death so apart from a beat up Barbour waxed gilet for $15 the scarf was the only thing that opened my wallet)

I understand the need to attract the younger consumer and Burberry going that route. But I feel the brand has become severely gaudy. On a side note, the last item that really caught my interest was a wool knitted scarf that Matt Smith wore for their holiday campaign in 2017 (I'm surprised a Tom Baker is cool meme wasn't made.) After looking at the design, I am seriously considering making it based out of images.

I chose the route of variety rather than quality in this case. I have various colors and fabrics depending on color matching or practicality. Some scarves will have a synthetic blend which hold up better to abuse (spilled drinks, runny nose etc..) while others can be matched with my other garments. I have alpaca, cashmere and merino wool scarves. Trust me, I do have champagne taste but I have a finite budget. And in this case I put it towards shoes, sport coats, shirts, vests, suspenders and pocket squares.

@@gentlemansgazette Because without the transport between the U.S and Europe there are less greenhouse gases released. When you produce in Europe you shouldn't have to ship to the U.S. and back to the individual customer. Of course this can only be attributed to your products from Europe. It is the role of governments to drive that transition, but maybe there are already some ways to contribute. Thank you.

@@catnoir-a-saurus stuff like that does happen occasionally - usually the people that buy these are wealthy, some extremely so, in the UK "old money" people often clear out their stuff to charities simply because it's "the done thing" and when they pass away their family usually might keep a few momento items then sell off the rest in bulk. In fact my main source of vintage clothes specialises in sourcing from these manor house "garage sales" around the west of Britain. Personally I've picked up a very rare, and collectable, Billingham "Kodak UK" portfolio bag at the Red Cross op shop in Brecon (Wales) for 5 UKP (value is in the several hundreds of UK pounds) and a Campbell's of Beauly deer stalker hat for 2 pounds in an Edinburgh op shop (they cost about 45 UKP new) the first was in "very good" condition and the later was pretty much "as new" ( so "as new" that side by side with the one I purchased from Campbells when in Beauly a few years ago... they look like they had been purchased new together)
