    When a baby is born people often only go over to visit the baby and see how baby is doing, but people rarely check up on mum to see if she is coping well. If you visit someone who has just given birth don't forget to ask "How are you feeling today? Would you like a cup of tea and have a talk?"

    Thats really awesome of you to say and remember that. I had my baby 2 years ago with an emergency C section. ALL horrible things you can think of happened to me while giving birth. I had severe post partum depression. My mother would say "whats wrong with you? you're a mother there is no such thing as depression its in your head!" my husband would say "Your a mom how can you be depressed, I don't get you!" and my mother in law would say " You shouldn't have had a baby if this is how you felt about it." No one asked me how I was, no one was there for me and it was by far the hardest time of my life. And now I am having baby #2, I just found out I'm pregnant a few days ago and thinking about how my first pregnancy was and how I didn't really have any support I made an appointment to get abortion done but last moment realized that I just couldn't do it. So I decided to keep it but I'd be lying if I told you I am not absolutely terrified for what's to come and pray to god I don't suffer from postpartum depression because I really don't have any supportive or understanding people around me.

    This comment just confirm my theory of the real reason of why woman experience this kind of depression wich is more prevalent among former attention whores and promiscuous woman they suffer of these becausethey lost their beauty and they no longer have all the attention they use to have before.

    My mom told me recently that after I was born, she had this. She said it was like depression, she felt like she wasn't good enough and that she couldn't be a good mother for me. Then she said she had suicidal thoughts, she was convinced that I would be better off without her. I'm glad she decided to stay, because she's the best mom in the world :)

    +Amelia Winchester Same thing happened with my mom. When she had my brother & sister she said she was fine, but when I was born she got hit with the Postpartum. I asked her what it felt like and she said her emotions were all over the place and that she didn't want to deal with me. Her best friend stepped up and she help my dad take care of me. She said the Postpartum didn't last longer then a few weeks and after that she was fine.

    What's worse is postpartum psychosis, where mothers feel like or attempt to hurt their babies. A lot of it comes from moms who feel overwhelmed by motherhood (depression & psychosis) so if you know someone who's pregnant, the best thing you can do is be there for them. Babies feed of a mother's emotions, so if she's stressed out the baby is going to be stressed out and crying as well. Holding the baby for her, being calm and giving mom time to get calm, can go a long way toward helping her feel better. Isolation is another big problem for new moms, and it can be stressful to figure out how to haul all the crap that we think we need for new babies, so that's another area where help is appreciated.

  • @sydcary13
    @sydcary138 жыл бұрын

    I remember thinking that postpartum depression was almost something fictional, that I was emotionally and physically strong, that this could never happen to me; until one day it did. I was so prepared physically before, during, and after child birth but I was completely taken by surprise about what would emotionally happen to me afterwards. For how common this is, it really isn't talked about enough. I thought IF I was affected it would happen immediately but the reality is that it didn't peak until a few months postpartum. I felt like a complete failure and that it would never get better; I felt as though I would be judged and ridiculed for feeling the way I did when I had such a beautiful and miraculous child right in front of me. But the truth is there is a whole community of new moms feeling the way I did and doing exactly as I did which was hide behind closed doors and pray that I would become my old self somehow. 8 months later, I'm not exactly who I was, and I never will be. I'm a mom now, I shouldn't be like I was. But the point is I'm happy again; I've found a new normal, and I would never dream of being anything but a mom. So It didn't happen as smoothly for me as it did some moms, but the journey made me stronger and doesn't make me any less of a woman for going though it. To all of the mamma's struggling with postpartum depression, just know that no matter how bleak it may seem now it DOES get better; you are still a good mother; and you are NOT alone.

    Nothing wrong with not wanting children, its good to be honest as to why you don't. Not everyone is suited to nurture children, I know plenty of people above age 50 who have no children and are completely happy! Earth is already overpopulated, plus I wouldn't want to raise a child in a world filled with bullying and gun violence in schools, I had a hard enough time growing up in a middle class family, plus I cant stand baby crying omg lol

    My mom had postpartum depression with me and my brother. With me it became extreme paranoia and anxiety that someone was gonna take me and my brother from her. She would get up constantly and check outside to make sure no one was coming to take us. She told my dad one time that someone else needed to be our mom because we deserved more than her. She is such a strong woman who has battled with mental illnesses her whole life and I can never thank her enough for how strong she has been.

    PPD affects animals and humans alike. Maybe not in the exact manner, but similarly. Some female dogs end up killing their pups after they've given birth to them since they don't recognize those pups as their own. It some form of disconnection I would say. So yes it is real thing and shouldn't go ignored, some women end up killing their child or failing as a mother because of this.

    I had PPD. It started for me, i would take care of my daughter but i didnt want to hold her. Or if i did, i would break into sobs for no reason. I also had a huge fear, that we had a thunderstorm roll in and i kept thinking the tree outside my daughters window was going to snap and fall into her room. I literally wanted to run and scoop her up and hide in her closet. But i ended up talking to my Dr and he put me on Prozac and it helped. With my son, i started working out soon after he was born. I think that helped keep the PPD away. I still had baby blues but i didnt have it like i did with my daughter.

    During post partum, I lost my cousin to drugs. I feel like I wouldn't hurt as much if it weren't for the post partum. My in laws abused me mentally and emotionally and even physically (if you count shoving and poking). I will never have kids again because of them. Post partum depression is no joke. Add in abusive in-laws and unsupportive family and boyfriend and you got one hell of a nightmare. I survived and am a proud mother to a beautiful five year old little girl. Not a day goes by where I don't think about the trauma.

    I'm really glad that buzzfeed posted this. After I had my baby I struggled and still struggle with depression. it's a daily challenge just to get myself out of bed and it was the hardest when she cried. listening to her would make me feel angry and sad. there were multiple times where I would go in to feed her and just go back to my boyfriend crying because I couldn't do it. I couldn't handle it. If you are struggling with this you aren't alone. You can get help. Don't let it stop you from being an amazing mother.

    and it doesnt just go away its so hard to overcome it can take years. ive suffered from it and its terrible.one person who was very important in my life is now gone from my life because of his judgement of me and my postpartum depression. no one has a right to judge us because they can never imagine how serious and hard it is for us to go through.and everyone handles it differently. thats unacceptable and unforgiveable to throw a mothers postpartum depression in her face and call her a bad mother.please be understanding and compassionate to mothers.

    I've been struggling with postpartum mental illness for a little over a year now. My son is a beautiful little boy, and I feel so disconnected from him. I know they say it will get better, but it's hard to see it getting better when it's been going on for so long and you've been trying to get help and make it better for so long. I hope one day I can feel like he is mine again, but I'm preparing myself for the possibility that I'll never be the same.

    Postpartum depression to me was fighting to overcome the high standards that I set for myself. They were so high that I failed to meet them everyday, and therefore I felt like I failed as a mom. Luckily, with changing my daily routine and how I talked to myself, I was able to overcome it. Now, I make videos about my experience with postpartum depression. I hope to help other women feel like themselves again by posting funny videos about parenting and some serious videos about what I did to get better. Thank you, Buzzfeed for talking openly about postpartum depression!:) Keep up the good work!
