Momma Bear & Cubs In Gatlinburg, TN

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A momma bear & her cubs foraging threw the trash at one of the rental cabins in Gatlinburg TN. She did't seem to be to worried about me watching her, but she did keep a close eye on me. Just another typical day at work!

Every time I stayed in Gatlinburg the chalets had a lockable trash cage. Basically it was a steel cage that had a padlocked lid. You would open it, insert garbage, then relock it. The bears would still come by, but after a few tugs on the locked lid they would give up and move on to a place like this...where the renters ignored the warnings of bears.

What's killing me about this is that there are 2 trash cans right there, yet the trash was left out of them. It is a nice video of the bears and very dangerous to be that close to a mama bear and her cubs. I am surprised the mama bear did not come to the truck also. The people who were either renting or living in that cabin need to be fined for leaving the trash where the bears could get to it.

Had the same thing happen to us in 2015. Cooking steaks on the grill, mama and cubs wandered up from downwind (had my son watching for this, thankfully). We were up on a short deck with railing so I grabbed the bear spray and yelled at her. She backed off pretty quickly. Next night, the idiot neighbors didn't latch their trash bin and they went nuts eating leftover pizza.

This is a good example of why trash should never be left out. And no, this person did the right thing by leaving the bears alone. It is the fault of whoever left the trash out ! It would have been dangerous for this person to try and scare all those bears away, and wouldn't have done a bit of good with all that food there.

If your going to move out in the woods folks. There are WILD ANIMALS and u must either live with it or move out. If u keep distance u can learn to live with them give them their space. They will give you space and if you don't want trash everywhere take the left overs place it in a spot. And put it there at the same time the animals will know and they will leave the garbage alone.

Since they're most of the time very friendly, and pretty smart. The fact they don't attack people, even knowing they're physically stronger than us, show their smartness. Since they know we could take measures with weapons.

These bears are dangerous because they have a semi acceptance of humans. If you are caught outside or worse, inside your home with mama bear + cubs snooping around, you are in real danger. The cubs may look cute but mama is a killer. I lived in East Africa for many years and I know the most "tame" of wild animals can suddenly turn on you for no apparent reason. Leaving temptation in the trash cans is asking for trouble. Again, I know this from Kenya with hyenas, baboons and big cats.

I'm from California too. Feeding bears just gets people and those bears killed. Reminds me of people who like to have their cat have kittens for their children to watch. For each kitten they have they should be forced to watch the kitten that has to die for each. In the spring, kittens are usually euthanized first because they are far too much work to be kept up if the mother isn't there to do the job. And of course, it just means more cats will be euthanized. I don't know how someone can love pets and create more that will have to be killed then. One thing to breed a specific pure breed if you have the qualifications and experience. But most just have non purebreds that likely won't find homes. Even if they do, then others won't get those homes.

These bears will end up dead because of our own carelessness.

The "small" black bear could kill a man quick. Consider this...a German Shepherd weighs about 70 lbs and can take down and kill a big man pretty quick and I think has a bite force of 300psi. The "small" black bear weighs twice as much as a German Shepherd and has a bite force of around 1000psi which is enough to CRUSH a bowlining ball immediately. Tremendous power and although black bears rarely attack they can and I think have killed more humans than any other bear. This is not normal activity for a black bear and these have become TOO humanized.. Their claws can slice your jugular. They eat their own but are cute. I challenge anyone (even armed) to walk through the smokies at night alone deep in the forest and see if you feel afraid. KNOW what you are dealing with here folks and good luck.
