Moment of Awe with Florence Williams and Alannah Yip

Спорт

When Sport Climbing champion Alannah Yip faces critical crossroads in her competitive or personal life, she turns to nature to help ground herself and set priorities. Florence Williams thinks she knows why. As neuroscientists, psychologists, and coaches look more closely into the healing power of nature, one theme that emerges is the Power of Awe. Florence is fascinated by research showing that when we immerse ourselves in grand landscapes, we experience subtle adjustments to our nervous system as well as helpful shifts in perspective. We feel “smaller” in the presence of things that are ancient, beautiful, or vast, like the forests that Alannah grew up loving. We feel calmer and more connected to the world around us, and we are more open to learning new ideas about ourselves and others.
In this conversation, Alannah and Florence discuss the awe-filled experiences that helped Alannah become who she is today and the difficult choices she’s had to make to get here. How did she learn to remain true to herself as she competes internationally? How does she overcome doubt and how does she keep her focus on the bigger picture of her mental health and fulfillment? Which landscapes is Alannah most drawn to and what qualities does she find there? And how does her deep connection to nature drive her personal goals for now and for the future?

"Hold your hands out over the earth as over a flame. To all who love her, who open to her the doors of their veins, she gives of her strength, sustaining them with her own measureless tremor of dark life. Touch the earth, love the earth, honour the earth, her plains, her valleys, her hills, and her seas; rest your spirit in her solitary places. For the gifts of life are the earth’s and they are given to all, and they are the songs of birds at daybreak, Orion and the Bear, and dawn seen over ocean from the beach." ~ Henry Beston "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." "Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt." "And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul." ~ John Muir ME: Why am I alive? OLD WOMAN: Because everything else is. ME: No. I mean the purpose. OLD WOMAN: That is the purpose. To learn about your relatives. ME: My family? OLD WOMAN: Yes. The moon, stars, rocks, trees, plants, water, insects, birds, mammals. Your whole family. Learn about that relationship. How you’re moving through time and space together. That’s why you’re alive. ~ Richard Wagamese "My fealty is to the mountain. Majestic it stands, above all, to see all, to support all, to sustain all. I subject my heart, to its heart." ~ Paul Jung
