Molokini Snorkeling Tour (Maui) | Is a Molokini Crater Snorkel Trip Worth It?

Molokini Crater snorkeling is a top thing to do when vacationing on Maui, but is it worth it? One can see amazing marine life with the shoreline snorkeling. But we did see dolphins…
Need to know how to fit this trip and more of our favorite Maui activities into your itinerary? And save money? Download our Maui itinerary for your dream Hawaii vacation: thehawaiivacationguide.com/maui/
We put off a trip to Molokini Crater for a year but when Pacific Whale Foundation opened for residents, we couldn’t resist going to Molokini Crater and Turtle Arches on a Pacific Whale Foundation tour.
We put off a trip to Molokini for snorkeling because we thought it wasn’t worth it. We love snorkeling on Maui and one can do great snorkeling for free from the shore. Why get a snorkeling boat to see turtles and fish?
After going, we realized a trip to Molokini Crater is more about the day out on the water. Be it a big boat tour, a sailboat, or a raft, it is a fun day on the ocean if that is what you are looking for in a #Maui or any island on #Hawaii vacation.
We have more things to do and recommendations on our favorite activities on our website. Check out the link below.

Recommendation on Snorkel Gear:
Before you rush out to buy snorkel gear, we recommend renting when on the islands. Save on luggage space by renting. There are a lot of great, local renting shops on all the islands. Prices range from $1.50 a day to $6 day. One can get discounted rates by renting for the week. With a local shop, you can make sure you get quality snorkel gear and they can fit the mask properly. Many resorts also provide snorkel gear!
If you are still eager to purchase, here are our favorite snorkel gear sets that are travel-ready and fit very well! They are well-priced for the quality. thehawaiivacationguide.com/ha...

I just love your KZread channel. We are going to be in Maui in late August early September for my birthday. I found you looking for tips when traveling to Maui but what made me subscribe was that your son is about the same age as my son. Seeing you do certain activities gives me confidence to do that with my little one. All your videos tend to be well focused on family travel with the occasional sprinkles of info for those without kids. I found that refreshing in comparison with other travel KZreadrs who often are much younger and have a lot less ideas to offer to families with small children. Thank you!

We went with Paragon a few years ago and it was great. They actually sailed, which was a bonus for us because we are sailors. I Having said that, I would save my money there are great places to snorkel and see just as much sea life right off the beach. Just this week near airport beach we saw turtles, a ray and a couple of reef sharks in addition to a myriad of fish, the exact same fish that you see on the snorkel boats. There are even better spots, but I’m not giving them up. Do some research and they are easily found. Not secrets, you will enjoy them more if you discover them on your own.

Would you recommend scuba diving for people who are good are swimming but never scuba dived before? I have been snorkeling and wonder if diving will let you see more things/have more fun in the water to see marine life. Also which goggles do you recommend for short sighted people? I can wear contacts but the goggles i used last time let in water. Also the snorkeling tube let in water if the water is not calm. Does diving gear make it a better experience?

If you’re an intermediate swimmer you’ll be fine anywhere in Maui where the water is calm. The salt content in the water is high, so you’re super buoyant. The only recommendation I’d add besides going early is to try your mask and snorkel in a pool first to make sure your fit is right.

I went on this same boat and it was honestly pretty lame. Perhaps I’m used to a bit more adventurous dives. The student marine biologist told everyone to get away from the turtles. They stopped the boats when dolphins swam by due to it being unnatural behavior. They complained about plastic straws and sunscreen even though they boat loads of people out there everyday. They also tried to tell us a single type of fish is responsible for all the sand on the Maui beaches. I have grown up on the ocean and done tons of spear fishing. So my view might be a bit biased. I guess for families this crater is fine.

Be careful you get what your paying for. I took my kid to Maui and wanted to take him on a boat cruise like this to the crater for snorkeling. I googled it up and paid nearly $200. When I arrived they told me they don’t go to the crater in the afternoons. They took us somewhere off the coast on a small crowded boat. We saw a few fish and coral. They served us hot dogs for lunch. I took my kid to snorkel at Black Rock Beach and Napili Shore and we ended up seeing sea turtles for free

People who can't swim do this snorkel trip. They provide lifejackets, boards to float on, and lifeguards in the water. Perhaps try this tour as there are 40 people in the water instead of over a hundred: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoyJsMhvorGxY8o.html

I love the beaches, I love the water, the snorkeling, the eating, but what happened to the horses? My boyfriend and I are avid equestrians so my question is: where is the best stable where you can rent a good, well fed horse, and just take off on your own with your partner? In Jamaica, we had the worst experience, being tethered together on unkempt, dirty, malnourished horses. I thought my boyfriend and the guide were going to come to blows. What a horrible experience we had.

Maui and the Island of Hawai'i have lots of options for horseback riding. Call them to see if you can ride at your leisure. I usually see them in lines on a ride but not tethered.

Unpopular opinion. I don't think it's worth it. Was there in October 2018 and have been going to Maui since I was a kid (I'm 33 now). The boat trip was fun and the crater was really cool, but the snorkeling was mediocre in my opinion. I have had much better snorkeling at a bunch of different beaches than I did on the Molokini tour. Also it's very very "touristy" if that's a word haha though that's probably pretty obvious. Could have just been my experience, but my wife and I won't be doing it again. Thanks for the videos though, you guys are great.
