Mohammad Reza Shajarian - Happily Concealed in Your Mystery - Poems: Saadi, Baba Tahir, Hafez, Rumi

LIFE LESSONS I HAVE LEARNED FROM PERSIAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC
(Order, Flow, and Remembrance)
Persian Traditional Music follows a set of laws informed by the Radīf (a collection of melodic figures - the repertoire), which are expressive, diverse, and encompass infinite subtle potentialities. This collection of melodic figures organizes the melodies (Gooshèh) in a number of different tonal spaces called Dastgah.
Each of the seven Dastgahs, like the cycles of nature, follows a set of order. Pishdarāmad (lit., "Prelude") is like the dawn, which prepares and brings about the day. It is followed by Darāmad (lit., "Introduction"), like the sunrise that sets the day's tone. Then at the zenith of the day comes the fast, metric piece with a repeated rhythmic pattern called Chaharmezrab (lit., "Four plectra"). Its name suggests four consecutive strokes of the plectrum on a string.
Avāz (lit., "Singing"), the improvised central piece, and Tasnīf (lit., "Ballad"), a composed metric song of classical poetry, follow and take us through the afternoon and into the evening at which point a Rèng (lit., "tone"), a rhythmic closing composition, brings us to the end of the day.
Through abiding by this underlying structure, the art of improvisation is given birth to in its creative dance.
The repetition in rhythm, tone, and poetry lines point to the importance of remembrance, for humanity's biggest pitfall is forgetfulness. While the mind may find the repetition redundant, the heart finds it fresh and the source of concentration, penetration, and contemplation.
Enjoy this private live concert of these three lovers of this art and form.

It's my translation. Here is the first part: I have made a thousand attempts to conceal love's mysteries. But, like a boiling pot, I too was not able to contain my simmering. I was cautious from the beginning, not to give my heart to anyone. But, as soon as my eyes beheld your goodness and divine countenance, I lost all patience and consciousness. Such a discourse from your mouth reached the ears of my soul, That ever since, the advice of others sounds like fiction to my ears. Unless you conceal your beautiful countenance and bring an end to my disturbance, Otherwise, I am not able to stop myself from beholding you. It's best that I should not enter the hall of ceremonial worship and dance With my distressed heart. For, I may enter with my own feet, But will be carried out unconscious on the shoulder of others. Come to me for reconciliation today and into my arms tonight. For in your anticipation, my eyes did not sleep last night. You have so quickly let go of me, yet I am still so loyal, That I would not exchange a single hair of yours for the whole world. Don't say to me, "Saadi, let go of the path of love." What use are words since I do not accept any advice? To take the path to nowhere is better than sitting idle. And even if I don't reach my goal, the effort itself is worthwhile.

and here's the second part: The source of my pain and my cure is the Friend. The source of my union and separation is the Friend. If the butcher was to skin me alive; My soul would never separate from the Friend. Blessed are those who have a passionate, sweet love for you. The ones who are fully connected to you. In my heart, I long for those beings; Who in their hearts, have a longing for you. This rose, which I cared for with all of my love and attention. And which I watered with my own tears. When has it become permissible in the court of the Beloved, For the flower to bloom through my efforts, while others receive its blessings? My Lord, I'm weary of this heart. Night and day, I am disturbed by this heart. I have complained so much about this complaining heart. Take it away, for I'm weary of this heart.

and here's the third part: O friends of the heart! Hear my cry: My heart is running wild, I worry my secret love will soon be revealed. Shipwrecked and stranded, I beg the favoring wind to arrive, So it may guide these sails to my meeting with my Beloved again.

And here's the fourth part: I am restlessly in love with you night and day. I submit my head in prostration at your feet night and day. I am restlessly in love with you night and day. I submit my head in prostration at your feet night and day. I will turn night and day into a crazy lover like myself. I'll keep up this madness night and day. The Beloved demands a genuine heart and soul from all lovers. I give my heart and soul genuinely night and day. Until I discover what is in my core, I won't scratch my head for a moment night and day. When your love began playing me like a song, At times I am a harp; at other times, a tar, night and day. In this caravan, the chocked-reined lovers are led by you. Amid such train, I am pulled about night and day. From that night when you promised me union; In anticipation, I am counting the days, night and day. Such warmth is sowed in my thirsty soul, That tears rain down from my cloudy eyes night and day.
