People seem surprised, but as a Belgian I can tell you that most Belgian fans did not have any expectations for this world cup. Our coach selected older players like Hazard, Mertens, Vertonghen and Witsel based on their history, not on their recent performances. It's amazing that we came so close to progressing against an excellent Croatia side.

Hard fought game by Croatia against a strong Belgium side. Modric and company had a few nice plays and solid chances to score, but Lukaku had better opportunities in the 2nd half that he missed. His reaction time on the ball appeared to be slower than usual resulting in missed opportunities. Well done by Croatia to hold the fort down and move to next round.

@@tankc6474 Look at it again, one chance was clearly out of field but this fifa channel put it 1:09 Then he had one chance that was clearly unexpected. It was a bad reaction of goalkeeper. Only big chance was when he hit the post and one chance when he almost scored 1:31 Croatia had 3 or more chances in the game that could have easily been goals and one penalty that was not an offside.

Lukaku was looking for Goal of the Century and honestly speaking he didn’t get any real opportunity to do that, all chances were so easy that he didn’t feel the need to score from them. It wouldn’t prove his class. He wanted to become greater than Messi in 1 match so he left all easy chances.

Lukaku is actually going in the World Cup history books with that performances but for the wrong reason

People forget that Lukaku was injured for a few months and this was his first match back on the pitch. He wasn’t even fully fit but he still was subbed in. Just imagine what pressure there was on his shoulders
