MODIFIED Isuzu Mu-x VS STOCK Suzuki Jimny Off-Road Challenge || 4WD Overland Touring Adventure Trip

G'day Guys and Gals
In todays video Lisa and I take our family out to Amamoor State Forest for an Off-road challenge and overland touring trip. In this video Lisa is driving the 2018 Isuzu Mu-x and I am driving my 2023 Suzuki Jimny JB74.
The Isuzu Mu-x has been modified for off-road driving and overland touring with a range of modifications from 2 inch Outback Armour suspension lift kit, AFN bull bar, SCF rock sliders, Oricom UHF, Fuel vector rims, Falken wildpeak tyres and a rear harrop e locker.
The Suzuki Jimny is stock standard and has no modifications yet. It has 15" rims with the standard tyre size 195/80r15. The Suzuki Jimny is a great off-road vehicle straight from the factory. With front and rear live axles on coil springs the Jimny is a tough off-roader at heart. It pairs its great driveline with the all grip 4x4 traction control system which acts as a BLD or brake lock differential. When a wheel is registered as is is spinning freely as if it has lost traction the wheel will be braked via the abs system to divert drive to the wheel that is still on the ground. This system works really well and means that the vehicle is very capable off-road on 4wd tracks.
The Suzuki Jimny JB74 surprised me at how capable it was off-road. I have previously owned multiple Suzuki 4wd's including 2 of the older Suzuki Jimny's, Suzuki Sierra and a Suzuki LJ81 ute. Suzuki have done a great job maintaining the tough off-road ability of the Suzuki Jimny JB74. They also have done a great job of upgrading everything in the Suzuki Jimny as well. One of my favourite features of the 2023 Suzuki Jimny Jb74 is the 9" infotainment system with android auto and apple car play. I am able to run my Gaia GPS topographical maps through the head unit when we go on 4x4 trips. This means I can actively track where we have been and where we are heading.
This was Lisa's first 4wd trip with her behind the wheel by herself. She has been 4wding with me for a long time but mainly in the passenger seat. She has driven multiple times off-road before but I was always in the passenger seat to guide her. In this trip Lisa took the reigns off the mighty Isuzu Mu-x and tackled some tough off-road 4wd tracks through the hills.
Lisa did a great job of driving the 2018 Isuzu MU-x through some tough off-road trails. She tackled the trails in a slow controlled manner and was able to negotiate them all very safely. Lucky she was able to because she had our 2 daughters in the car :P
After we tackle some 4wd tracks around Amamoor State Forest we decide to head down to the camping area for some lunch and to let our Daughters out for a run around. Just at the end of camp is a nice 1km walk through the rain forest and along the creek. The walk was really easy and great for kids. Then we found a nice spot down by the creek to throw some rocks in the water and relax for a bit. What an awesome day!
I hope you enjoyed our out takes, we had a few funny moments in this trip like me almost loosing the drone in a big gum tree and Lisa not being able to get the valve cap off after I did it too tight.
I have fitted every modification to the Isuzu MU-X myself and really enjoy filming and teaching you guys how to do the same to your own 4x4 vehicles. The Suzuki Jimny JB74 is going to get a complete build series as well! So if you are interested in seeing more of the Mu-x or the Jimny please Subscribe to my channel and turn on the notifications bell :)

@adzoutnabout8666 I have been really happy with both units. The DTX600 is a great handheld. It's 5watt so it can transmit long distances. Water proof and dust proof. Also has a Lithium battery with 30hrs run time ! Really great unit 👍

Fantastic video mate really enjoyed it. You can not go wrong with the latest JB74 Jimny they are a really fantastic off reader . You just need to get it lifted and get some muddy or aggressive AT tyres on it . I can’t wait to get my self one. Looking forward to seeing you and your family on the next adventure

Hey Nick. I have been enjoying your content. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I had my SR5 stolen recently which I had been setting up gradually for an off-roader / future cape trip for about the last three years and I’m seriously considering starting again with an MUX. Could I ask two quick questions? 1) would you recommend a pre or post DPF model as a base to start from (my budget probably only gets me into a 2017/18 model at best)? 2) Do you do paid jobs to do work on these cars (I’m in brisbane, but would happily bring it up to the sunny coast to get someone who knows what they are doing to work on one. I can do some stuff, but doing things like fitting a rear locker is way above my skill level)?

I really like the dpf models because of the 50nm extra torque, led headlights, 6 speed transmission. Infotainment system. If none of that bothers you then the pre dpf models are a great choice. I used to work at a 4wd shop on the Sunshine Coast but I have since moved away. Opposite lock are great for fitting the harrop e lockers.

Great video as always Nick. Quick question, I have a 93 trooper with aisin manual locking hubs. Is it okay to use 4L with the hubs unlocked? I find it easier to drive steep hills using 4L but 4x4 are not necessary on pavement right? Also 4x4 is not r commended on paved road. So i was wondering if i can use 4L in 4x2 mode (hubs unlocked). Will i break anything? Thank you

It is perfectly fine to use it like that. Having low range 2wd can be handy sometimes too.

Hey Nick.... still loving your channel. Seemingly random question I know, but are the wing mirror adjustment switches on your MUX backlit when the headlights are turned on? I'm embarrassed to admit that I've only just noticed they are not lit on my 2019 MUXy and I can't find anything in the owners manual or on the web!

  • @LowRangeNick

@@LowRangeNick Thanks for the fast reply Nick. Guess Isuzu were worried about tempting drivers to try adjusting mirrors while underway at night? Anyway, at least I now know there's nothing wrong. Incidentally, I put in a light bar and installed an associated push switch in a vacant 'slot'. The switch has a backlit illuminated light bar symbol and a single backlit slot which only comes on when the headlights are on and the light bar has power to it. However, the light bar symbol stays backlit all the time i.e whether the headlights are on or not. I've tried to identify a different fuse slot position in the panel to the right of the steering wheel so that the light bar symbol is only backlit when the headlights are on, but no luck. Would be super grateful if you have any thoughts/ tip(s) on this one..... I know I'm probably being too fussy but I'm good at that!
