Modi’s Made India Communal & Authoritarian; Courts Caving-in; India May Fracture: Pratap Bhanu Mehta

In an interview to discuss the impact of 7 years of Narendra Modi’s prime ministership on India, Pratap Bhanu Mehta says Modi has made the country communal and authoritarian and went on to say that he has nightmares about what the future could hold for India. Dr. Mehta says he fears that if the present impact of the Modi government continues India could fracture and there could be widespread violence. He says he has nightmares about this.
In a 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Dr. Mehta, who is widely considered India’s foremost political thinker and who’s columns are widely read and respected, spoke about the collapse of institutions like Parliament, which he said had more or less ceased to function.
Dr. Mehta said the failure of the media to challenge and question the government is exacerbated by the way several of its organs actually promote and actively spread communal poison.

would this guy accept that the word secularism in the constitution cannot be considered legitimate because it was introduce by an autocratic govt run by dictator Indira Gandhi during emergency. the answer is he will conveniently dodge it. he is complaining about everyone but his own commitment to democratic principles which makes him look nothing but arrogant. the issue is people for whatever reason have chosen to disrupt the establishment and Modi is just an instrument who is now taking the lessons from past and making things even more uncomfortable for hypocrites like the two in this discussion. for long people like mr. mehta and karan (less said is better) have never raised issues with the governing style of congress PM or for that matter Sonia Gandhi who without any power had absolute authority over every decision made by that govt (read Sanjay Baru's book). so, for them to sit here and lecture us or BJP on india's compromised democracy is quite rich and hypocritical. if he is truly believes in the democratic principles then he should accept people's mandate in Modi's favor and admit that there is an alternative thought process (however uncomfortable it is) and people like him needs to lead a debate with that establishment. by calling names and fear mongering he is showing how intolerant he and his brigade have become and also are not willing to accept that there is an alternative thought process.

There should be a mindset to hear and understand the things without comparing it with the condition worse than this. If this practice raises , then there would be a very less chance of improving something, cz everyone can get satisfied by making oneself know about the other worse conditions than he would be facing. The aim of this interview was to focus on the working and mentality of our PM but not on the the other aspects about which you made me know. Here raising these concerns doesn't mean supporting the other party. We should see this interview as a informative subject and all information can never be true, so we can disagree too. Some might be thinking when did this happen Hahahahah it was planned and executed in very smooth way with a weapon called collegium. And the nightmare is all those judges are already taken there respective offices . Just keep a close eye on judgements how they are passed and in who's favour . 9 our of 10 judgements are passed in favour of bjp government and that 10 judgement is pronounced in such a way that it won't damage bjp just like a candle on the mid wall . I had huge respect for judiciary especially higher judicial offices like high courts and Supreme Courts but now I fear for my country and people .

If dealing with Mutual Respect to minimize the overall harm of Dharma on the basis of Truth & Reconciliation is communal, so be it. What stood out for me in this interview was, apart from the eloquent phrasing and choice of expressions, there are sweeping accusations and leading questions at every point... Lets admit it, Modi has been a marked change from the way politics was conducted in this country, and since he operates within the democratic framework, this cabal of influencers from Lutyens Delhi are at a loss of ideas how to rein him in... The result, blame the opposition, blame the civil society, blame the media, blame institutions, practically everything and everybody. You don't need a KT or Mr Mehta to tell you that modi is exploiting to his advantage what qualified as appeasement politics and supression of majoritarian aspirations. The roots of what he's trying to exploit lie in the Congress rule of 70 years... Not a word on any of this....Like every correction, it seems like an overindexing and a swing to the other side.... But it's a matter of time before it finds its balance.... Till then, please continue to call out Modi's problems... Most welcome in a democracy

I agree, but its duty of parents to educate children that religion is personal & to read about history divide & rule was used by britishers not once but numerous time to take over India and even when they left they still divided us. Its to an extend today major part of out GDP goes in military while our research budget is nt even in single digit its less then 1% of the total GDP. Also it shows being from land of aryabhatta we are really bad in maths or very gullible. Basic maths is 80% more or 14% or 2%. Of the 14% 7% are females and 7% male including children 2.4% and old 1.6%. So his govt is saying the majority 80% so weak and frail that they should fear 2% of the population. Its time to stop kids frm watching godi media or waste time on facebook or whatsapp which is doing nothing but spreading hate (new accounts of its whistleblower) but make them to read about history and explore themselves to Indian culture and different religion. And share the same with your friends and so on. Love and kindess can kill hate. Its strange in land of Bhagwat Gita where Bhagwan Sri Krishna said im in everything and evrything is me. If a stone turns its coz i want it to be so .

Dr. Mehta’s assessments are absolutely correct and in the years to come, sadly we will witness the downfall of India. With the gradual increase in communalism being readily applauded by many, the day is not far when violence will be unleashed on the minorities. Zero governance, high inflation, maximum unemployment does not deter the blind followers in believing that their future is being corroded totally. As a people, we should worry what legacy we will leave behind for the future generations.

What if the economic decline for four years in a row is not a coincidence, but by design? What if the economic decline is a strategy to make available a raging section of the youth as the foot soldiers for the communal political project? And then the energy and rage of these foot soldiers are harnessed to spread the communal poison, and the bursts of carnage. Conversely, periods of economic growth and opportunities have rarely produce a conducive political environment for the political dividend from social divisions, since the potential foot soldiers are gainfully engaged in meaningful economic pursuits. If this sounds far fetched, a glance at the world over the past century would throw up quite few instances. And again over the past two decades, what looked sporadic has now emerged as a new trend in many parts of the world. National populism is just another form national socialism.

The position that bad economics is predetermined is based on the assumption that modi and his cabinet members are actually good at economics and are playing dumb about it. Perhaps they are just really bad at running an economy bcz they have a poor scientific temperament, want a yesmen cabinet so they choose people who are ignorant and easy to control; these are all facts too. Most dictators are extremely insecure people who see everything as a threat. Look at the people going missing under Xi Jinping and the abuse of UAPA under modi.
