My dad, now 82, introduced me to these geniuses of jazz in the late 1970s... when I was in high school. They, along with a handful of other jazz and modern music greats, have paved my musical path ever since. The MJQ is pure class transformed into music!

i discovered this group not by chance but from expanding my listening tastes last century and I have not been the same person since in this search for beauty and unrestrained improvisation with a relentless quest for musical perfection. I made that quest one of the principal goals for me discovering music in jazz. The group demonstrated this quality over and over again on so many other occasions. This discovery was what solidified me as a permanent follower of their music with avid tastes for music performed by noteworthy artists who practice creativity and as person endowed with a desire to hear excellence. Commentary by John Lewis was much appreciated. His improvisation on the keyboard was the hall mark of another form of excellence not to be emulated or copied. Milt Jackson's improvised work speaks for itself. OMG!Training in music might come down to something not defined or explained fully yet

We saw and heard this same quartet many years ago for a birthday gift from my wife for me. People in the audience were not the people who traveled to the expensive jazz clubs located in large cities. These sere local jazz fans who came to worship their heroes. They knew what they were hearing and seeing. I was in astonishment falling our of my seat seven times in bewilderment and disbelief at what was on display in front of me. Before the recital seeing this performance was like collecting baseball cards without attending the game in person. Most of the audience members were in the same category We knew about their talent. We watched the game that time and saw it in person. Nothing could have been a better birthday gift for me then. Same feelings today prevail. Yes indeed.

Milt Jackson spells it out clearly with his contribution on so many standard tunes. "It don't mean a thing" is perhaps his lasting and memorable contribution for solidifying my loyalty to the group over so many years. Percy Heath should be heard more as he is here.

Watch the audience members remain silent in respectful astonishment for having had the chance to hear this talent. This was serious business then for me to hear this music,It still is today so many years later. No such thing as the past tense for describing the total importance of this performance for me today.

As a 21 year old student I was first privileged to watch the MJQ live in concert in Glasgow in 1960. At 82, I'm still smitten by them. Such has been the deep and abiding jazz legacy bequeathed by them. All imbued by such musicality and informed by the traditions of jazz stretching from New Orleans to the present day. Who says jazz hasn't evolved to be a significant art? The only tragedy is that, being an improvised music, if it's not recorded it's lost - brilliance and all; otherwise residing in the memories of those who were witness to hear great performances in the moment!

Speak all you want about the advantages of longevity in producing memories of quality jazz improvisation it does not get any better than this for me.Thank you for presenting this recital for me to hear and see it today. Shake it up Sally. There is combustible energy to make these musicians go forward. Look at the people in the audience who grant quiet dignified respect to this group as if they were at a road side shrine. ready to worship a special type of jazz music performed by a unique quartet made of talented individuals not to be assembled again. "Golden Striker" itself is enough be said about what Percy Heath is doing with his instrument to make listeners want to hear the group again. Watch John Lewis bedazzle listeners with improvisation and concluding with Milt Jackson's contribution.

Watch the facial expressions of audience members. This is like a visit to the all-star painting exhibit at the museum with the painters in attendance and in front of you displaying their talents. Musical compositions are not any better than this one about "A Day in Dubrovnik". This is serious playing and performing then for them and the audience. For me so many years later it is paradise.

Why has not there been Nobel Prize for performing jazz? Which groups would be standing in line to receive recognition and honors? A " A day in Dubrovnik" spells it out clearly for defining this group's contribution to jazz music. Marmalade and mashed potatoes do not constitute a desirable meal by themselves but when you are watching the musical skills on display by the group of chefs here you know about reconfiguration of recipes and wholesale ingredients not again to seen for offering the same recipe as more than an appetizer.

Listen to "Jack the Bear" and tell me about the advantages of getting substance from the cultural vending machines found in too many places and promoted as dispensers of quality music as if it were not different than fast food packaged in a way to confuse you. Need a definition of true believers? Take a look at the audience members for having finished the long trek to arrive at this location for perfection in music. Percy Heath might by himself convert you to a different form of musical religion Listen to the group preform "It don't mean a thing if it don't got that swing" and tell me about reincarnation and rebirth of spiritual qualities designed for catapulting you to heaven.
