    NOW you tell me, *snicker* (I mean, NOW I am looking down here, when I am done). Oh well, I am in Blender 3.1 and it wasn't too difficult to figure out what had changed -- I also think the changes have been for the better, which helps. Shortcuts are obviously the way to go, even if at this point remembering them all seems daunting. That's why it's important that you show the alternatives. You have a teaching style that suits me well -- lots of demonstration and repetition, step-by-step. I can't bear the videos with "speed tutorials"; those aren't tutorials at all, but only show off how quick the person can do something they've probably done hundreds of times and I not at all. Maybe that will become ok when I myself grow more proficient, but I kinda doubt it; the way you do it just anchors it all better in my brain. In any case, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    You can only create certain shapes using certain techniques. All you really need to know how to do is create curves and shapes from scratch and just like drawing, realize every model is just a collection of shapes. If you use references for objects and break them down into simple 3D constructs, man-made objects like this with a lot of clear insets, extrusions and straight lines become really trivial.

    One can make a chest but there isn't enough info here to make you knowledgeable in modeling itself. Not enough depth...it lacks the why. You know in your mind how you would do it but working in Blender you need to know how someone you have never met would do it and where they would hide the option to do it . Not intuitive at all.

    This tutorial is so helpful I made a mistake on the cylinder unknowingly and corrected it without hitting ctrl + z 20 times. I noticed the mistake after using the knife tool. I did dissolve faces which made the bottom flat instead of having an open bottom. Selected the bottom and did deleted the face and made it hollow as intended. This tutorial has taught me well. Thank you for this 👍

    I'm not even half way through this tutorial. my first attempt messed up and on going around my nifty box, I noticed a bunch of edges on the embezzlements which I had done accidently by not using ctrlZ after canceling the operation. I managed to get back to where I was in no time because of how well this is taught, and without any messed up edges (yet)! Credit to you for these tutorials which, although the program has changed dramatically visually, can still be translated now and followed with ease! Kudos!

    Good tutorial. You can also select a collection of face loops with control and select the edge pointing towards the other faces you want selected. Of course for the last part that potentially might select the bottom ones as well. You also need to flip the normals of the chest lid at the end. They're reversed which is why it is darkly shaded.

    Nice tute. Very useful. I found it easier to get the lip I wanted at the top by using loop cuts on the rim faces then extruding rather than using inset and extruding. One of the things about Blender is there are often different ways of accomplishing the same thing. As a relative beginner, I hadn't heard of the different extrude options such as 'vertex normals' until I watched this tute.

    I joined an indie game dev group that allowed me to join while still learning modeling, and according to the other modelers, it isn't so bad to have triangles. So for anyone wondering, in game engines (like unreal engine 4) it isn't the end of the world if you model something that absolutely cannot avoid having a triangle, like the tip of a sword or a rupee from the legend of Zelda.

  • @SurfacedStudio

    @SurfacedStudio

    6 жыл бұрын

    There is nothing wrong with having triangles in areas where you expect no deformation :) They're usually just a problem if they're on areas of a mesh that needs to animate / move / change so tip of a sword should be fine - though even that can easily be turned into an Ngon

  • @Agateophobiadragon

    @Agateophobiadragon

    5 жыл бұрын

    But it would still be pretty easy to avoid triangles on sword tips/rupees. /\ | | | | | | |_| Now, this has a triangle at the top But if you put the top like this /\ |\/| | | | |_|_| Then you've just created trapezoids, (with 4 vertices)

    If you want to assign different materials to different parts of the model you have to go in edit mode and select the faces you want to have a different material. Then right in the Materials Tab you press plus for adding a new material slot. After you configurated the material like you want just click assign while the faces are selected. So far every project or model I've made I had to extrude individuals, then additionally extrude the faces on the edges. Is this a version problem or is there something I'm doing wrong?
