In today’s episode of Retro Renew, I will be modding a Game Boy handheld. However, it won’t be the original DMG, Pocket, or even the Game Boy Color. This time around I’ll be modding the the “Forgotten” Game Boy. This less common Handheld is one of the original monochrome Game Boys, but it seems that no one is really nodding these, and for good reason. It’s short availability window makes it somewhat rare and a bit more expensive. For this reason many collectors prefer to keep it in original condition and not modify it. However, there may be some circumstances where it may be good to modify the console and it has some unique advantages over its other Game Boy siblings. Let take a clear look!

I have a silver GameBoy Light that is in almost perfect condition given its age. It's nice to know there is a modern IPS display available for it, but I honestly think replacing its screen devalues what makes the Gameboy Light unique in the first place. Now I suppose I could look for another one that is damaged, but I honestly think a modded GameBoy Color fits the bill better. Leave GameBoy Lights alone.

There's actually ways to replace the electroluminescent backlight in the GB Light if it's worn out, which can happen depending on how much the EL panel is used--it darkens gradually over time. I do think that goes a long way towards preserving the original experience. But if the screen is hosed, then I don't mind it getting replaced with a new one. Screen rot happens way too often with these old consoles.

Totally agree! If it's working perfectly there is no need to change the screen. That's part of the charm of the GB Light. This is just a way to salvage an otherwise damaged GB Light. I'm still on the hunt for a mint condition Light (they're so expensive now 😫)

This is a really cool mod for those that have bad screens on their Light, such as screens with screen rot! The AA batteries that the Light takes means that even with an IPS mod, the battery life should be far longer than the Pocket's. Since the Light is so similar to the Pocket, most mods for the Pocket will also work for it. Something else of note to prospective console restorers is that if your GB Light's screen is fine but your backlight is super dark/barely visible, you can actually replace that worn backlight with a new electroluminescent panel. You can cut a brand new electroluminescent panel down to size and wire it to the points on the board that the original EL panel connected to. If you perform a search on the Game Boy subreddit, you'll find a couple posts about it that detail how to do it. Electroluminescent panels lose brightness with use and age, so being able to do this goes a long way towards preserving the original look, feel, and experience of the Game Boy Light. You'll be able to toggle the light off and on as normal like on a stock system, and be able to see it outdoors or in bright lighting conditions, as well as in the dark. The backlight on the Light was generally always meant to be used in dark lighting conditions, and not turned on all the time. The more greenish-teal tone is a lot more friendly to the eyes in the dark compared to the bright, often pure white backlights of consoles like the AGS-101 or modern IPS displays.

I have a GB Light, but I messed up the screen when I tried to change the screen plastic protector. It now shows a very light vertical line. I can somewhat live with it. This mod though requires the shell to be shaved. I am sure I want to do that to my original GB Light. Would be nice if there is a screen where I can just swap.

Is there a solderless ie a solder free, no mod no cut/shave or scoring sort of non even in terms of case mod requiring screen that I can swap into a gbc with perfectly retained sbility for switching BACK to the original screen/regular one if there is a desire to do so in future? Also is it specifically possibly to have the screen use the same exact ribbon cable connector for instantly being compatible as the original screen is?

Specifcally for purpose of having the gbc with a dcreen that is as already was with original one but with regardless wether it is a "ips"? Or prefferably a front lit but backlight or isp or whatever works heck even a el/electroluminescence is fine by me for the swap in screen to not have anything being altered on the gbc but rather at any time in future retained ability to put back in the original screen (most of all it is to not just retain og state or at leasf hardware besides the screen being original but the fact it is a sentimental and also was a gift so I do not wanna change anything hardwarewise etc and the fact it helps me use aa batteries befire they expire or can no longer hold their charge capacitance if rechearchable ones is also beyond sweet imho)

I skip the adhesive gasket personally, BUT, I think its good to use it for a buffer between the shell and the IPS screen. I would heavily suggest to not remove the backing to the gasket that adheres to the screen! This is because if you ever need to remove the screen, it'll basically be destroyed by the forces needed to remove it from the adhesive. unless of course you douse it in IPA before hand which has a chance to ruin the internal IPS panel. I believe Goosewerks feels similarly, but I wont speak for him.

Totally agree Xipher! I used it in this case since I don’t have an aligning bracket. I would 100% love to not use an adhesive gasket especially with the ones that ship with these as they use a very strong adhesive. I need to work on my 3D modeling skills so I can start to make my own brackets. Wish I had the 3D modeling skill that you have. Cheers buddy!

I have been studying the Pocket's back case design and I now believe that repro back shells can be made that allow for AA batteries by way of making the back protrude outward (preferabbly at least 8 to 10 or more mm down from the cart slot edge for aesthetic choice), replacing the terminals on the board with longer reaching ones and carefully positioning the left end of the compartment as to not intrude on the capacitors nearby. They left a lot of useless space in the Pocket's battery compartment to work with, so it really is just a matter of giving it more height to fit the batteries even more properly than the Light does.
