This was a really solid how-to on this little battery kit. Your modification is really great. Thanks for your demonstration. But there is still a question that the voltage of 14500 lithium battery should be 3.6V. Will it damage the machine as the voltage is over charged? I have concern about that. Also is regular AA battery allowed to use after the modification? Thanks for your reply in advance.

@MachoNachoProductions

Seems like it would only take slightly more work to make it so the battery compartment would be wired to take two rechargeable batteries in parallel and as far as battery indicator you could find and incorporate one but finding one small enough would be a challenge, I do like this mod it reminds me of some of the kits for converting a original GBA to be rechargeable
@MachoNachoProductions

I agree, it totally does! I think it is possible to add another battery in parallel, I'm just not knowledgeable enough to figure out how. Hopefully an updated kit will include that feature! Adding an LED is also very doable and I am planning to make a video on it! Cheers buddy!
If you were to clip the battery terminal so it doesn't solder to the board and bridged the traditional positive and negative, could you use two of thos batteries in parallel increasing amps instead of volts for longer play time?

I've been recently getting back into retro gaming and starting with the snes, I'm running into cartridges with aging old batteries. While the mods I've been looking up like this one are super cheap, there is also the investment into tools. Not that I'm complaining because, this might be a fun hobby to get into that could lead into a career path depending on how much I enjoy this. I went into computer repair right after High School but, I wasn't ready for college. I was a terrible student and didn't want to learn, I just wanted to live a life my way. I've always liked this kind of stuff. Now I want to ask, is there a resource I can do to do fun projects once I get all these tools? I just feel like as a guy just starting out, there's got to be other uses for all these tools.
@MachoNachoProductions

Hey Sephiroth (great name)! This is indeed a great hobby and yes, there are other uses for these tools! I frequently use some of them, for electrical repairs on my car. Also great for computer component repairs/mods. These tools are essential if you really want to get into modding/repairing. Let me know if you have any other questions and best of luck! Cheers!
Would it be possible, I imagine with a different wiring setup, to use both battery slots and increase the amount of play time?

Thanks Princess Peach! So glad you enjoyed the video! I haven’t noticed it getting to hot, maybe just a little warm. I hope that helps! Cheers!
Curious with a TP4056 Board Could I charge Li-Ion AA batteries safely? Got some AA steady 1.5V batteries I want to be able to continue using as they last awhile. But also charge and play at the same time.
Amazing video as always! Do you know if this mod is compatible with the Game Boy Pocket?
@MachoNachoProductions
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jacob! Unfortunately, this mod is not compatible with the Pocket. Both the dimensions and the battery requirement I believe does not permit this kit to be installed. Would be great if McWill makes one! Cheers
Why not rig it up in series to run two batteries, as the GBC was always intended? Running only one battery seems to me to only be giving you half of the overall run time otherwise possible.

Would it be easier to solder the wires before the board is put in place?
What about rechargeable batteries, it only trades being set up free for having to restart the console to swap out batteries. And it's cheaper. Some would argue this is better, because you don't actually have to recharge the console you can just carry around extra batteries.
Is the Mcwill LCD kit required for the recharge mod to work? I'm going to be getting a Laminated Q5 screen and want to get a rechargeable battery for it. Thanks!

Could this same kit work for the gbp? This is amazing.
What voltage was the 14500 battery? And could you use two 1.5V LiPo batteries to allow for a higher capacity while still keeping it able to charge? I would assume yes as long as the batteries allow for 5V charging right? Mostly i'm curious about the voltage more than anything on the 14500 though
@MachoNachoProductions

I go through 2 batteries every day with my BennVenn Freckleshack backlight. Would this be a good alternative instead of using batteries? Would it even work?
@MachoNachoProductions

Yes, this mod will work with the BennVenn backlight kit! As for it being worth it, it depends on the LiPo battery you end up using. In my install I used a 680 mAH battery and only got 2 hours of playtime. I think you can get a 1300 mAH battery and that should last roughly double that. For now, I would suggest using a pair rechargeable NiMH batteries instead since you can swap them out on the fly and wait for a new kit from McWill to come out. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I just made sure I followed McWill's instructions to a tee and procured all the documented components. The approved battery for this mod is only a single 14500 battery. If you go to the Console5 website you will be able to find McWill's customer service email. He will definitely be able to answer your question and he is very responive to emails! Cheers!

Oh no! Flux is a must, haha! Really helps the solder flow much better. Cheers!
What kind of soldering iron do you use?

It’s a Hakko, I think I have an affiliate link to the one I use in the video description. Cheers!
Damn I haven't seen that style of USB in a long time. The Wii U is the only device I can think of that uses it that is modern.

PS3 uses them as well, and all its accessories, like the move controllers which are still used with the PS VR. Mini USB has some advantages in comparison to Micro USB, as it is rated for more insertions ... so it shouldn't wear out as fast, which is nice if you charge the GBC often

@@MrBunt if I'm charging my game boy more often than I'm charging my phone then holy crap and my phone still works perfectly fine for years later (2017 to 2021) my phone uses micro USB.
is there a way to get the battery contacts into parallel instead of series? so you could get 2 14500 batteries in!
@MachoNachoProductions

I'm sure it can be done but I am uncertain how to do it. I am hoping McWill is working on an updated version of this kit that will allow for 2 batteries and an updated port interface. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Cheers!

Snip the series contact in half and solder + & - wires for each terminal
just remove the unused battery terminals in the case. and slap another rechargable battery in there.. when one runs out you can just swap it out for a charged one
No clean juice battery for GBC? :(
Next project suggestion: Rechargeable Battery mod. Install a Lithium Ion battery pack to make it like the GBA SP. Capable of being rechargeable without AA batteries
U can charge a gba sp with a phone charger usb too right?

Does the McWill mod heat up when charging or if using the CGB while charging?

I think it might warm up a little. It wasn’t too noticeable to me. Is yours getting very hot?

@@MachoNachoProductions I haven't done the mod yet, but it's something I'm concerned about. I'm also considering Eneloop NiMH, but it looks like the mod is designed for a LiPo pack. Do you think Eneloop would work safely?

@@Albylion great question! Unfortunately this will not work with NiMH batteries. This mod is only for LiPo batteries. Cheers!
