A housing that worked on one generation, might not work on the next, just because of a screw placement change. The touchbar exacerbated this by adding not only a design problem, but an integration problem. That is, where do you put it on the housing? Frankly, this product was DOA from the get-go. By 2008 when the first one came out, HP was already on their 4th-5th generation of purpose built products, Convertible laptops. Good video, but you got "First Sale Doctrine" wrong. It's about the copyright holder's right to dictate terms on the first sale of a copy of their work. It originally came up when a publisher tried to stop anyone from selling their books for less than the listed price. The courts ruled that the publisher could enforce contracts with retailers on the first sale of the book, but anyone reselling that copy later was not beholden to those first sale terms. So it's about the first sale of a copy of a work after it's made, not about the first time you resold a Blu-ray you owned. I don't think there's anything specific in copyright law about reselling existing copies, but keep in mind it's called COPYright law; it's entirely about a temporary restriction on who's authorized to make and distribute additional copies of a work; reselling a copy that already exists doesn't fall afoul of copyright laws because you're not making a new copy, merely reselling an already existing copy that was, presumably, authorized to be made.

@@ComputerClan IANAL either, and it can be confusing, since first sale doctrine often comes up as a defense to infringement, so it seems natural to assume it's referring to the defendant's sale, not the original first sale by the publisher/retailer. The Wikipedia article on first sale doctrine contains this line that sums it up well though: "After the initial transfer of ownership of a legal copy of a copyrighted work, the first-sale doctrine exhausts copyright holder's right to control how ownership of that copy can be disposed of. For this reason, this doctrine is also referred to as the 'exhaustion rule.'" Also, looking at the case that originated the doctrine, since it was established by case law initially before it was codified, makes it clearer about who's first sale they're referring to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobbs-Merrill_Co._v._Straus On a tangent, that article mentions this at the end: "The court did not hold that a contract or license imposed on the first sale could not create an obligation. In this case, there was no contract between the owner and the original purchaser, and there was not privity of contract between the owner and any third party." So EULAs, which are basically a contract between the software copyright owner and the purchaser, could be considered an attempt to end-run around the first-sale doctrine. Certainly for a lot of PC software nowadays, with online activation and the like, many people don't feel like they have the ability to resell it, even if they theoretically have the right.

The fact that they had a track record already is why I had invested in the company. There is definitely a market for it but I guess something ran away from the founder. I suspect that part of what happened was the extra expenses of the redesign and mission creep. It seems like Haas wanted this to be more of a universal modkit and knowing apple that was not going to work. Honestly should have stuck with the modbook designery and worried about add-ons and flexibility of functions later.

I remember when these were A Thing, and Ars Technica did a review of what was then the current model. It sounded very niche, but in a way that made sense. If you had a use for it, it was very much what you might want. I hadn't heard anything about them for years, and I had just assumed that they went from being niche to all but pointless, after the introduction of the iPad Pro. I mean, I'm no artist, but just trying out an iPad Pro at Best Buy was an amazing experience, and I can easily see it -- together with the Apple Pencil -- being an extremely useful tool for artists and other professions that need to do a lot of digital drawing but with a lot more power behind it than a standard iPad. Thanks for making this video! (Yes, even though I didn't watch it until it was two years old.)

Just rig up a digitizer pulled from a wacom tablet or some other compatible sensor, ensuring that the digitizer has the same size as your macbook's display size, then install it onto your macbook's display assembly. I personally use a ThinkPad X220 Tablet which I Hackintoshed myself. Since the ThinkPad has both a 2-point capacitive touchscreen and an internal Wacom digitizer built right onto the display, the touch works out of the box.

It was not mentioned that a show on the Syfy channel was using them the original model as props. I'd put money on it that the major issue they were/are facing is the hardware itself, ever since the late 2015/2016 redesign and the introduction of the T2 chip etc, the new macbooks just became impossible to touch, I attempted a project somewhat recently where I took the mainboard from a faulty 12 inch MacBook (tiny little board) and attempted to install it in a custom mini lounge PC chassis, lord god the problems I had, the second that board came out of the case, boot issues, display issues, crashing, slow processing etc etc etc, but pop it back in the chassis and boom, it's fine...even without major components like battery, display and keyboard connected.. apple has done a lot to make sure projects like this and repairs in general just aren't worth your time , I can only imagine the immense roadblocks they've faced trying to get a touchbar Mac into a totally unique formfactor, I would go so far as to say it's impossible.

I got a mostly working TAM. it does suffer from the notorious buzz, unfortunately. Mine's decked out with G3 CPU upgrade card, the Apple TV/Video FM system, I wanted to replace the old hard drive with a Compact Flash to IDE adapter, but never got around to doing that upgrade.

Super. Mine has a G3 inside it, too. I was thinking of doing a hard drive replacement with CF, but not for the TAM… for a NeXTcube. I think that'd be fun… if I can figure it out.

I own a tablet PC with a CD ROM from 1995. It is the Ricoh 1200-S. It has a Color LCD (SVGA) with touch input through a pen. It has a Cyrix 486 50mhz processor, 2x CD ROM, 8mb ram (I upgraded to the max 32mb. takes standard 72pin DIMMs) 150mb PCMCIA type 3 Hard disk drive. The tablet was sold new with Win 3.1 but win 95 does work with some driver finessing . The thing was originally manufactured for the funeral industry. I also have a GRiDpad 1910 ,2260 and Pro11. they are all pen top computers as GRiD called them.

I paid for a product I saw on Kickstarter years ago. The product was a set of glasses with a built-in camera to record what you saw. But when you pay on Kickstarter, you are not paying for a product; rather, you are making an investment and if that investment works out, you may be sent the product you want. Since the fledgling camera glasses company was taking pre-orders on their website for the same price, I placed a pre-order instead. I am very happy I did. After delays and typical BS from Kickstarter projects, several months past the estimated ship date I finally cancelled my pre-order and received a full refund. I don't think the people who used Kickstarter ever got their money back.

I have an idea for how ModBook could be revived: Put the internals of the new Apple Silicon Macs with the M1 chip into the body of a modern tablet, like the iPad Pro. Give it a proper multi-touch high resolution display with pressure sensitive stylus, and maybe even 120hz refresh rate, and Smart Connector-like keyboard and trackpad support, running macOS Big Sur, of course. This would be the ideal tablet for professionals who just can’t get enough out of the iPad Pro, and with a new 5nm fanless ARM SoC, it could likely fit into the body of a thin and light modern tablet. Plus macOS Big Sur is remarkably touch-friendly.

A ModBook Pro X with Big Sur would be amazing. Honestly, Big Sur to me is a big clue that eventually Apple'll do a touchscreen pro mac. Big Sur's interface makes little sense for trackpad and mouse, it can run iPad Apps on M1 equipped machines, and macOS's gestures have been touchscreen friendly for a *lonnng* time now.

What happens if you install newer OS’s on the ModBooks like Catalina? Does the pen functionality work still, Since the MB5,2 is supported by dosdude’s patchers and the ModBook is a modified MB5,2, It technically should work.

I had one of these, and it was *not* good. Mine was one of the GainSaver made ones and it sucked, couldn't do screen-rotation because it had the wrong graphics card, had *no* gps, the internal shielding had big holes in in which caused it to register a constant press against the upper left when it was drawing too much power through the magsafe. I had to replace the fans, had to made my own rf shield out of layers of foil, and used Abracadabra(a plugin for Quicksilver) for gesture control. I loved the thing but it was a bad product, fit only for weirdos like me who own a soldering iron. The iPad Air is a better product in every way but the OS. Edit: If you are using Apple's LaunchPad instead of Quicksilver you are missing out. It isn't just a launcher but a neat combo that matches the speed of text input with the ease of using a GUI and if you have RetroActive you can use it to control iTunes on versions of MacOS that are supposed to use Apple Music.
