In an interview with Reggie Wright Jr., former gang member Mob James reflects on the 1992 Watts Gang Truce, which was an attempt to halt gang violence in the wake of the Rodney King riots. During the riots, James was incarcerated for attempted murder. Despite observing the truce from jail, James expressed skepticism about its potential longevity. He argued that too many active gang members were not ready to abandon old rivalries and grievances, predicting that it would only last a few months. The April 1992 gang truce did last in a certain sense. It made it official that Bloods and Crips aren't full-on enemies. Bloods don't hunt Crips, and Crips don't hunt Bloods. The beefs are strictly confined to the local politics of sets and hoods. That's why they can be in the same room together, they can do formal and informal business together. Nortenos and Surenos couldn't do that, and even after the August 2012 treaty in the California prison system, they're still at war in the streets and the federal prison system. The People Nation and Folk Nation gangs and other major Black and Latino gangs all base their beefs on local politics. I'm not sure how it works between the Texas gangs like Tango Blast, Mexikanemi and Texas Syndicate though.
