    Roger pretty much confirmed all my suspicions. The Main guards for MMA are "Full" guard, half guard and butterfly guard. And the biggest threat to Jiu Jitsu is space in MMA. If you want further examples of this, you can look at Ryan Hall and Garry Tonon getting KOd in recent history. I was a bit surprised they didn't talk more about what Jiu Jitsu lacks which is wrestling, you must ask yourself, how are you going to get the fight to the ground for your submission game?

    Yes, Jiu-Jitsu is about controlling distance, & namely disallowing the opponent the ability to create necessary space to strike. That's never been a mystery, its integral to the art. Also, there's plenty of effective takedowns in JJ. Don't mistake sport JJ for all Jiu-Jitsu!

    The other part that puts BJJ in disadvantage is the time clock. A great guy like Roger relaxes and takes his time, but the time limit doesnt allow u to do that, since the more aggresive guy would get the decision. Thats why wrestlers hv such a great advantage. Their game is fast paced from the beginning. Its easier for wrestlers to transition into MMA.

Try putting someone in a triangle while they are throwing bombs at you, unless you've trained pro in MMA you're getting your ass beat, facts... Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...except the current enthusiasm for sports jiu jitsu and its growth and development might suggest otherwise. I would agree with Roger that many of these skillsets do not translate into "real fights" (although the practitioners would probably fare well against a random guy on the street, it's questionable whether the sport approach would find success in a more "fight"-like environment...which was where the art originated from).

  • @peterprochilo4555

    @peterprochilo4555

    I've see remarks from older school jiu jiteiros to the effect that modern jiu jitsu has gotten more effective. Which is almost certainly true, given the dynamics of sport competition That said, and given the original context of jiu jitsu was "fight situations" you would think that would translate into greater domination in the ring (i.e. more-like-a-real-fight situations). But that doesn't seem to be what's happening. Beyond the basic skillset needed for entry (guard play), the sports, as they separately evolve, seem to be diverging. Old school jiu jitsu at least retained the "fight" context. So yeah, although said facetiously, in some ways WWE is more like a real fight than sports jiu jitsu. Raising the question, at least to me: why practice it, if it's not necessarily going to translate to actual fighting?

    Ehh, there’s more BJJ base champs in MMA than striking base champions (all time). Because of the early UFCs it can be argued that BJJ is THE base art of mma. Every fighter knows some of it. Every single one. Even the most pure strikers (Adesanya, Mcgregor, Silva, etc) are all high level BJJ belts. This is simply because you basically can’t be an MMA fighter without BJJ. You can be one without great striking, and without great wrestling, but you need to know a decent amount of BJJ to survive in the cage. The only exception is other grappling arts that teach much of the same concepts (Sambo, Judo), but you can’t be a successful MMA fighter without those concepts

    The fact is BJJ can help against an untrained attacker without a doubt, but MMA changes everything. Roger talks about his guard, but I would never think of guard in MMA, top position always, if I find myself on the bottom I think like a wrestler, getting back on top is my goal. Saying that, if I had a guard like Roger, then maybe it would be different. This is not a disrespect to Roger or BJJ, I think that it is great and he is great too,
