    Possibly the best on board mass ship combat I have seen,...AND solo too. Actually when I think about it, I believe it could only have been this exciting because it was played solo and didnt have to go round and round with lots of individual combat resolutions (which would have dragged the thing into a slow slogging match). Of all the rules sets I have seen you use over the three seasons Trevor, I think this one handles combat the best.... abstracted enough to allow deep immersion and interpretation (like old school D&D managed so well) but without losing any flavour. Another excellent unfolding of the tale.

    @@rorydoconnor Mechanically, there are problems with both approaches. The Old School style lends itself to the Death Spiral and the current lends itself, in essence, to a mockup game of slaps. There is a sweet spot, I don't think Dominion hits it, but it does get very close. At least to a variation on it.

    This season is PACKED with action, which I didn't find to be the show's strong suit in Season 1. I often watched Simon's fights at 1.5x speed, but this had me on the edge of my seat. Fantastic episode once again! This season is awesome so far! I will say just to throw out an observation and opinion of mine, though the system makes for visceral combat and skill checks, I’m beginning to miss the more narrative “player facing” rolls of Ironsworn and PBtA. I feel this system, even in its overall simplicity, still lends itself to fiddly math that bogs down the exciting narrative. Just my two cents, but of course I still love the show and watching you every week get into shenanigans. But I also feel that you appreciate these thoughts too.

  • @ohelas

    @ohelas

    2 жыл бұрын

    I find the variety of opinions even in the few comments here interesting. I actually really wanted to like Ironsworn's approach, but I found myself a bit adrift following the action without Mythic's clear scene framing, and I was surprised to feel that the dice rolls had lost the drama I apparently found in opposed, sequential rolls. (I wonder whether I'd prefer rolling the two d10s first to set the terms, then the d6 after, a better fit there.) I also missed the curveballs introduced by Mythic's altered and interrupt scenes. But I'm finding Dominion's combat seems to bog down the narrative overmuch while mostly seeming to have a fairly clear strategy for each combat party. I suspect I didn't feel this way about the Savage Worlds fights because those tended to have more parties, so more things going on and a more dynamic battle overall. I love how much of the flavor of these systems one can absorb through watching someone else play, and I look forward to next week's instalment.

    I thought Ironsworn was a little hard to follow at first, but before long I came to appreciate it's simplicity and the way it could quickly move the action and narrative along. Definitely don't get that same feeling for dominion.

    Sharilyn is gonna be the BBEG of this campaign--my bets are in. I think she could be behind the conflict involving the League. Her ability to influence the mortal realm was established in campaign 1..the only thing that wouldn't check out would be Veil inquiring about Sharilyn's wellbeing. If she were working for Sharilyn...she would *probably* already know...unless Sharilyn didn't want them to know she was pulling the strings. Hmmmmm....how far will revenge plot reach? I guess we'll just have to tune in and see! Definitely looking forward to episode 7! - It would give Edbert a climactic moment to sever his ties to her once and for all...or even forgive her and forge and alliance. But alas...the dice will have to decide I suppose. This isn't a novel after all.

    I was thinking about the fact that Edbert could command the whole crew by rolling a 2 (26:45). My interpretation is that the number given by the dice is the actual difficulty of the task. If the number rolled is low, it's because the task was easy,. The level of the character would be how good he is, and the "luck" could represent if he's in the zone, or not, having a good day or not. In this case, the command roll is 2: maybe the sailors are all exhausted and scared of the storm, so they are very susceptible to be commanded by anyone, including one with as little experience as Edbert. Trevor explains that Edbert didn't need the luck to succeed because got better at commanding by observing the captains he has been in contact with. I would argue that, mechanically, Edbert becoming better would be represented by an increase of level rather than a low number on the dice. I'm still trying to understand how the combat system of Dominion Rules could be narrated following this little theory I have, but I feel it's already more detailed and interesting than the Dungeons and Dragons (5e) "Armor Class" system.

    I don't understand the multi-action penalty of the Dominion rules. If you take multiple actions during combat, is the penalty equal to the total number of actions or is it 1 lower than the total number of actions? Sometimes it seems like combatants take 3 actions (for example) and get a -3 penalty, but other times take 3 actions but only gets a -2 penalty. Maybe I'm not paying attention enough or there is some factor of the ruleset that I'm unaware of...
