I agree I was a catcher since I was a kid all the way to college... As a catcher you also need to know when to do it... But it was the risk of the most beautiful place to be a ball player... The most complete... You have to be a tough guy with good reflexes, being agile, forget about fear to the ball, and willing to take a hit. Baseball is life rest just details

I always enjoyed the physical aspect of baseball; collisions at home plate chief among them. However, modern day players are bigger, stronger, and faster. The amount of force impacting a stationary target (the catcher), is clearly too much for even the best of athletes. Probably for the best that a rule change was made, but I do miss the “ good old days.”

Zechariah Landstrom I know, that's why I said the new rule is good. Catchers will be out of the way giving the runner a clear path to homeplate which will protect both players. Have you ever slid into a catcher when he was blocking homeplate? It doesn't feel good.

  • @morgan595

    5 жыл бұрын

Zechariah Landstrom If the throw is good enough to get the runner out, shouldn't the catcher be able to field the ball and tag the runner without being in the direct path of the runner? The runner is pretty much focused on scoring, so the catcher just needs to field the ball slightly in front of or slightly behind the baseline to avoid a collision with the baserunner.

The side or avoid has been in high school and college baseball for years, and it’s working well in pro ball. But in a perverse sense, there was always a collision I wanted to see. Mike Scioscia, a catcher who never avoided a collision or dropped a ball in a collision an Bo Jackson running over Scioscia. Just a thought but I’m sure it would have been better than the Jackson-Bosworth collision.

I want some clips where the catcher tackles the runner to make the tag. Honestly it’s not cool that the catcher keeps getting hammered by all these dudes sprinting right into them

still crazy that catchers get angry if they get hit too hard. that is part of their job. there is only one way for the runner to get safe and thats hitting you to knock the ball free

The new rule is good. Do you see these catchers getting railed at home plate? They have no chance to protect themselves. They’re looking to find the ball and then make the tag while the runner is getting full speed with only 1 task, to crush the catcher. It’s not safe

so football or mma is safe? baseball now only has brawls to make it anywhere near as exciting. If you want safe, watch golf. And no one was forcing catchers to block the plate, it was their own choice.

If that's your way of thinking. Then you must want NFL to be come touch and rugby to wear flags and basketball to have no contact.

wiremessiah but it's not their own choice. If they don't block the plate they lose their job for letting in runs. If it were me I'd block the plate too because if you don't you're letting down your whole team. I'm saying the new rule is there to make sure that catchers don't have to be a crash test dummy for players coming to home plate to score a run. I mean you watched the video right? Those catchers didn't have a fat chance in hell to protect themselves from those freight trains coming straight at them

The catcher should know how to cover the plate without being in the base line. He might live to play another day.
