Mk2 Volkswagen Jetta 8v Wannabe Racecar Walkaround /Idle Sound

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I bought this car in stock condition with 160k miles in April 2000, and this is the car in September 2014 with 243k. It was a daily driver until June 2005 when the current suspension/wheel/brake setup was fitted, at witch point it became a garaged summer car not driven in the rain or salt since. It's a 1992 Jetta GL, originally with a RV engine and AUG transmission. The original unibody rusted out and in 2002 I bought a rust-free 91 Jetta, cleaned it up, and swapped all the guts over during a long weekend in 2003, and junked the original bodyshell. It drives and handles great. It's loud inside and visceral, you can feel everything, has great engine response, and is utterly reliable.
This car has had numerous stock parts replaced over the years, too much to mention. Always using quality fluids like Mobil1, Redline gear oil, Redline CV-2 Axle/Bearing grease, Lubro-Moly additives, and ATE Super Blue brake fluid. Always using paints like POR-15, Eastwood, Rust-o-leum, G2 caliper paint, SEM self etching primer.
Griot's detailing products have also brought my chalkboard paint and trim back a lot. I keep it covered in the garage and I cover it at work so It doesn't bake out in the sun all day

    Awesome build! I'm looking to build something like this with a jetta mk2 for my first car. I'm in China, and the mk2 chassis was mass produced here for about thirty years, so they're everywhere and cheap. A mk4 20v was also available. Your video really gave me inspiration, thanks!

    This was my first Vw watercooled back then i did not know anything about VW it was a 1987 so i decided to spend some money installed a Neuspeed cam, Leitritz exhaust plus the year i bought was in 1994 and the internet was not up and running yet but it was a fun back then I wished I could have bought the Gli version.

    +edward g For a couple years I was daily driving a matching red 88 GLI, it was really nice. The right rear strut tower was rusted out and leaking water into the trunk, so I unfortunately chose to sell it for parts when the headgasket failed. I did save the engine in case I ever decide to put it in this car. I was done building this car before KZread came around, but I at least had the VwVortex forums. The kids have it so much easier these days trying to learn about their cars.

    Thanks, I hope you ended up getting the Jetta. Sorry this comment slipped through for so long. It's dual outlet manifold and downpipe that goes to a 95 Jetta ABA cat with the 55mm outlet. This cat is a big ol' fat one and it's hollow, that's the snowmobile type resonation you hear in the middle of the car. After that it's a Techtonics exhaust with the optional 2nd resonator and the Borla straight thru muffler (which is really loud without the extra resonator pipe). I've also used that resonator pipe to successfully quiet down really obnoxious raspy Honda exhausts.

    WOW! What a bueat! I just got a 91 Jetta GL, having some trouble with fuses blowing from the fuel pump. Still trying to diagnose what s happening and just came across your vid! Just a question. How much has all this run you not including the time you spent doing it or shop time Just parts, pieces. Really curious, cause i love the way this car looks.

  • @Fopeano

    @Fopeano

    9 жыл бұрын

    NPRThatBlueCrayon I've been mulling over how to answer that question, but it's complicated. The easy answer is that when people ask how much to buy it, I say $15k. Probably is about $5k to buy the brakes, suspension, wheels, tires, lights, fender flares, seats, and other bits that can be seen. Some of the parts don't have the same price/availability as when I was putting this thing together. But then there's the cost of keeping a 25 year old economy car rust-free in the snowbelt, which tough to put a price on. That's why I just say it's 15 grand and scare them right off. Anyway, thanks a lot for the compliment. Even though this car is built for incredible handling, highway ramps, and downhill runs, I did make a lot of effort in the looks department as well.

    I read from somewhere that you used to have a CSW chip. Between the CSW and the TT chip, which did you prefer? Does the TT chip get rid of the off the line hesitation? BTW YOUR CAR IS PRISTINE

    Thanks very much for the compliment. Unfortunately the car is no longer pristine as it was wrecked, but I got 10k from the guy's insurance company and am in the process of rebuilding the car into a coupe with a K20 engine swap. The CSW chip was great when the engine was stock. It made the engine response much better, nearly the same as the TT chips I used later. It didn't really make more power, just drove much better. My next mod after that was the 8.5lb steel flywheel, and it really made the engine responsive. I moved on to the TT chips because of engine airflow improvements, not because the CSW chip was bad. The CSW chip is not for a car with a ported head/manifolds/cam/etc, and TT offers chips for that kind of situation that work. If you email me (in channel info) I can show you what I'm talking about.

    Thanks for the compliment. I don't understand your question, but will try to answer anyway. The rear brakes calipers can be replaced with Mk4 rear brake calipers. A special set of brake hoses with banjo bolts are needed. You should install properly fitted metal brake pipe from the rear axle pivot, but they can be connected directly to the stock drum brake pipe if needed. I'm not aware of swapping Mk4 brakes of any kind to the front of a Mk2/Mk3.

    Don't turbo a Mk2 8v. If you want turbo, do Mk3 ABA 8v engine with a 16v head. I personally like the VR6 better than 1.8t, but I never went with either because of the drawbacks of both.

    Well this thing has a Techtonics 268 cam with stock valve springs. At the time I was building this car, all known aftermarket HD valve springs were breaking and I felt I couldn't reliably run a more aggressive cam. Now you've got me cam shopping, looking at a Techtonics 276. They are now selling more digifant chips than they used to for cammed engines. The best advice I can give is to think of your entire intake/engine/exhaust as a system. The cam determines how much air the existing cylinder head can flow, but the intake/pre-cat exhaust/chip tune need to be well matched for it to run great.

    3:04 - The filter. I have a 92 VW Jetta GL. It often cuts out in the rain. A simple puddle will make the car stall. Is this due to the filter that was pointed out at 3:04?

  • @Fopeano

    @Fopeano

    8 жыл бұрын

    Highly unlikely, although having the intake filter in that position is a very bad idea if the car drives through puddles because of the possibility of hydro-locking the engine. What's more likely to be your problem is that the ignition wires and/or distributor cap/rotor are worn and no longer seal out moisture. All that is right on the front of the engine and gets misted and lightly splashed with water when it's raining. When the car is running fine, mist that stuff with a spray bottle or garden hose and see if starts running bad and/or you see little electrical arcs. You may also get shocked if you touch those parts while it's running. You also may be able to see arcing in the dark even when it's dry and running fine (that is really cool looking). If any of these 'tests' show anything, do a tune up (replace cap/rotor/plugs/wires). And for god's sake don't buy the parts from a chain auto parts store. Only German parts specialists should be trusted, like Germanautoparts.com.

    Thanks. This particular engine is rarely fitted with a turbo, but the commonly available 16v and VR6 engines for this car have many known tried-and-true setups. Top tuners have a few cars known to be over 1000hp, but 250-500hp is more common for DIY-built street/track cars.

  • @Fopeano

    @Fopeano

    Luckily no rust on this car, but I had my daily driven 88 GLI die from a horribly rusted out R/R strut tower about 7 years ago. I worked on one recently (one of my newer videos) that had some creeping in the front towers where there was seam sealer applied under the factory paint. That car had several mature rust holes in various parts of the floor pan structure, but the rust on the strut towers was still minimal.

    Pull the interior out, all the carpeting and sound deadening up, and find out how rotted the floors are. Scrape at the tar paper with a putty knife or prybar and it will come up easily anywhere it's rusty, and in some spots where it's not rusty. As far as modding it goes, I can't even begin to recommend anything without knowing what you want to do with the car. These cars can be modded into just about anything. If you want the engine and tranny from my car in the video, it's in upstate NY and available right now. I'm getting away from VW engines and swapping a Honda K20 into it.

    From what I can see its pretty rotted by the front passenger side. What can I use as a replacement in terms of sound deadening material? I know you get different types. Also I was told to scrap the stock motor (1600 8v) and put a VR6 motor in lol. I first want to clean the exterior by replacing most of whats old and worn and fix some of the dents. Also the shocks are shot and I wan to lower the ride height. I want to get rid of the rear drum brakes and replace them with disks. I literally want to rebuild the whole car

    please tell me why u didn't put a front sway bar in your car ?

  • @Fopeano

    @Fopeano

    7 жыл бұрын

    Front sway bars cause understeer. It's complicated to explain, but the short version is that the sway bar transfers weight intended for the inside tire across the bar to the outside tire in a corner. At the same time, the outside tire with the suspension compressed pushes up on the inside tire's suspension. These things happening overloads the outside tire and underloads the inside tire at the same time, causing a loss of traction on that axle. If the springs are stiff enough and set up right, the body roll isn't excessive.

  • @lounistech5891

    @lounistech5891

    7 жыл бұрын

    well i have an mk2 55 hp and the body roll is very big, i was thinking that maybe installing a front sway bar would reduce the body roll even though i don't have a rear sway bar, my suspension are stock one so can you please tell me what should i do ? should i buy suspension or sway bars our roads aren't good and i'm afraid to install stiff springs thus i'll have lots of rough driving and thanks for the help :)

  • @Fopeano

    @Fopeano

    7 жыл бұрын

    You would want to install a front sway bar in your case, which is what sway bars are for. It will reduce body roll and enhance transitional stability, without the negative effects of stiffer springs. The cost is lower overall traction when cornering at the limit, which most drivers do not do in the first place.

    15x6.5 Rota Slipstream knockoffs called Flik Blasts, bought in 2005. 4x100 ET35 73.1mm hub bore. I had one of them damaged and I'm having a hell of a time finding a match whether it's a Rota or a Drag Racing model. The small ones look like mine and the 17"+ have a different shape, and the listings sometimes show the 17" shape for the 15" wheel... It just keeps getting more complicated, but I digress. Order 15" Slipstreams today, and these are almost exactly what you're getting.
