Mixup 5x5x5
Ғылым және технология
Buy at www.shapeways.com/model/191928... Copyright (c) 2011, M. Oskar van Deventer. Mixup 5x5x5 is a twisty puzzle where many more pieces can swap place than one would expect. The puzzle has 262 pieces, of which 66 inter-swappable "squares" and 72 inter-swappable "spacers" between them. Each "square" can be in any of its four orientations. The name of this puzzle is ambiguous, as there are 9 pieces in a row at the edges. Still, the base puzzle is a 5x5x5. For the specialists: this puzzle jumbles and it is fudged.

That is an amazing puzzle. You are definitely the best puzzle creator I have ever seen, and I just wanted to say that you do a great job, and I can see that you put a lot of effort into these puzzles. Keep up the good work!

Jack Hillary Thank you!
i dont know... it just... just... i mean looking this puzzle.. it hurts...right in the feels
I don't know if you have any say in the matter but this is one I would definitely look into getting massed produced.
Very nicely done, Oskar! It looks crazy, cool, and intimidating at the same time! I'd be hesitant to mix that up in fear I'll never get it back to its original scheme. That puzzle is just amazing!

Mrs. Yellow_Ledbetter Thank you!
I have actually purchased this puzzle. I have a few things that you might want to keep in mind when you buy it though! 1. It takes ALOT of breakin time. Enought to make me buy my own vibratory tumbler for $100 2. Some pieces are VERY fragile (I broke one within 5 minutes) and I didn't know how fragile the plastic from shapeways was anyways as I never handled it before. 3. Lube doesn't work well 4. When solving, some pieces rotate without noticing. 5. Most epic puzzle on Earth. (not for speed)
Every time one of your videos comes up I get all happy because i will be seeing something awesome. This just jumped to my top list of all puzzles!
It hurts my brain to look at...

This I think is my favorite piece of yours, because it's so complicated and yet the movement looks organic.
this seemed to turn more smooth than alot of the recently featured puzzles.
Pretty! You've got a knack for these kinds of things. *applauds*
Thank you for the purchase and review! Oskar
That depends on your definitions. See the Twisty Puzzles Forum for more discussion on those. There are definitely some states in which some moves are blocked, but others are not.
This is one of my favorites from you!
Insane! And seems to turn really smoothly! Nice job Oskar as always =3
this is unbelievable! I wish we had more geniuses like you on Earth :)
@Siontje No, one corner has a cap to hide the screw that holds the puzzle together. That cap has been glued to the rest of the puzzle.
This is a matter of definition and debate. There is no consensus between twisty-puzzle experts how to classify puzzles with "stored cuts", like the mixup puzzles.
MY OH MY!!! THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR ME TO HANDLE!
That looks amazing, you are very very good at what you do.
if i win the lottery, I'm going to buy every one of your puzzles
You know what Oscar, if you're not going to quickly mass manufacture these things with cheap 3D printing, I'm going to, without infringing your designs, of course. Maybe ABS isn't as tough as your nylon powder prototypes and isn't half as accurate as SLS but it will do the job for many things. 0.1 mm is good enough for most of these applications. I'm a mechanical addict myself! But I guess you take pleasure in just designing them :D
Oskar you are just a genius
You make the best puzzles ever ur awesome
I bet this puzzle would be great in the polished white. I'll definitely get one of these at some point.
all of these cubes are so sick...
This is my favorite puzzle of yours, I Hope one day I will have the privilege to try It 😌
Sweet continue the good work!
I know this is a really old comment, but that made me literally LOL. *thumbs up*
They are well lubed. What you hear is an acoustic issue, not friction.
... WOW

notice me
Shapeways has operators with brains. If you order a huge hollow cube, then expect to receive an email with some questions.
Oskar, I've got a couple more questions if you've got time. I saw on the shapeways site, that this puzzle is sold in two sets and also as a whole. What are the differences besides price? Also, what is the best way to sticker this puzzle, or how much extra would it cost to get the pieces already stickered? Thanks! And keep up the awesome work!
Oscar you are designer as good as Dynamo magician!
@OskarPuzzle Thanks. I have always searched "Mixup 3x3x3", not "Mixup Cube".
I broke two corners and an edge that sits right next to the corner. I contacted Oskar through email and he put up the parts for me to order on shapeways within just a few days :) Oskar that reminds me I need another piece ordered. I can email you if that is easier but it is the center edge piece.
I still think the mixup series should be mass produced...
I HIGHLY recommend white strong and flexible polished. (WSFP). I got it as a christmas present from my mom and she ordered NON polished and sticking two pieces together was literally very tough. I assembled it and couldnt even turn it. (causing me to break it). After that, I took a toothbrush to every piece (didn't work well). Then I took a knife and just rubbed the blade on every piece all over for hours. (5 days) and then was able to turn in. However, with the way the core is designed... CONT.
Thanks for the heads up. What did you do about the broken piece?
Do your puzzles come with assembly instructions? I'm sure I could figure it out if I had to, so it's not a big deal either way, but it would certainly be convenient. In any case, it will probably be a while before I can actually purchase one. In the meantime, thanks for all the info and keep up the good work!
hi Oskar, the stickers part what do you do?... I mean, what material do you use (where can it be buy it), how do you cut it, etc
With a name like Van Deventer it has to be good.
Will keep you updated, Oskar. BTW, I don't know it's suitable for very high-order telescopic mechanisms like that 1 x 2 x13 (unlucky twist), compared to your SLS, but will try.
considering the price it must be a lot to make so if someone does want to buy it do you have more than one for if more than one person wants it or is it too much? just wondering in case I might buy one
My favorite cube!
Cheap ABS plastic mass produced puzzle. It is original and I am sure there are few copies out there. I would recommend this to anyone, but my warning is don't expect a perfectly assembled puzzle right off the back. A lot of work goes into it.
What material did you get yours printed in? Would I be able to avoid breaking anything if I get it printed out of a strong material?
how do you design these? do you use some sort of CAD or draw it out on diagrams?
Oskar, I'm a big fan of your work! This puzzle is my favorite in particular. I don't have enough cash to buy one currently. However, I do have some questions if you see this and have time to answer. If I were to purchase this from shapeways, is there a way to disassemble it? Would silicone spray lubricant be beneficial to its turning? Do you have any strategy tips for solving it?
Point 6 is incorrected. Shapeways charges for printed volume. Trapped powder is for free.
this is AWESOME
thats frickin' SICK!
@cbdrummer19 These puzzles are made of 3D-printed nylon by Shapeways. Please follow link in description for more info.
6. I found that many pieces are full of powder, Shapeways prices parts by volume of material used, and the trapped powder is counted as product. If the pieces had caps and the powder was removed it would be cheaper. 7. I do not regret getting this puzzle in the slightest. I have not managed to solve it yet, it is very difficult. 8. Send me a PM if you want pictures or video of mine. It is not stickered at the moment.
You are a madman, sir. I like you :D

One of my cubes locked up and it somehow mixed up like this. It was a V-cube 5 i got a year ago or so. good times.
Approximately how long would it take to calculate the God's number for this puzzle, to analyze every distinct condition? I'm no mathematician, but you are at the very least a master geometer. Is this a simply definable set, or can the description not be reduced from what you said in the video?
are there any videos of someone scrambling and/or solving this puzzle?
@OskarPuzzle
8 жыл бұрын
Not that I am aware of.
I plan to once I finish solving it! It doesn't even have stickers on it and I can't get it back to the full shape. very neat puzzle.
Hello, would you be able to build a "master ghost cube"? How much would it be?
Thank you!
how much more would this cost if u assembled it and stickered it?
Sure, it can turn 30, 45, and 60 degrees and mixup, but can it turn 90 degrees and still do it?
what does FUDGING mean? it was on the definition on your site
Haha I want one so bad, but I can't afford the $500 price tag right now. This is the kind of puzzle that needs more attention, great design Oskar I'll have to put this in my list of things to get in the future.

+TheSpiralAim Thank you for your interest. The price could possibly reduced a bit by packing the pieces into a box, and have iMaterialise produce the parts. Still, the cost would be in the EUR 150-200 range.

+OskarPuzzle That's much more reasonable imho I know a lot of these puzzles are pretty intricate, and I've worked in the plastic industry so I have no illusions about how much the materials and production costs actually are. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks Oksar!
Pg 2 on one corner it is very hard to turn the edge (stiill hardly can without a bit of force). A smooth piece (POLISHED) Most likely will not have this problem... How is that corner and adjacent edges on your Oskar? I sanded, polished, and broke in a few pieces just to see if everything would work if it was actually polished, and it worked amazing. Once I have more time with a tumbler I am sure it will all work even better. It is alot of work, but like he has said, dont mistake it for some...
It looks pretty cool just from the geometry of the cuts.
I believe the V-Cube's 8x8 is already a mix-up cube
OOhhhhh mannn this is so crazy, that I also would buy it!!!
SMOOOOOOOTTTHHH I love it!!!
what material do u use to make your puzzles?
cool but how is the corner cutting
Love it!
This will be massproduced?! I saw the 3x3 and 4x4 but not 5x5
@shirokage00 Please be so kind to read the description before commenting on the price. I had to pay that price too to show you this video!
so.. can you solve it when its fully scrambled ?
is there somewhere were u can get it cheaper
Random question, is their a way u can make it nearly proportional with larger centers and edges and slightly smaller corners? Not a challenge *cough cough* but maybe its possible? Idk, good work anyway
@OskarPuzzle

The proportions of this puzzle are dictated by the puzzle's geometry. Not much room for play to make things look more proportional.
@rohanix8953

Oh (reference to the proportional OH cube)
There are no assembly instructions, but it should not be too hard. Some of my customers buy my puzzles unassembled to appreciate the inner mechanism while assembling. Others pay a bit extra for assembled puzzles.
My customers understand the difference between a unique prototype and a mas-produced puzzle. I hope you can understand that too.
Omg how is that even possible?
Are you serious?? I have been designing my own puzzle and spent countless hours trying to remove all the trapped powder... I was almost 100% sure I read that it counts as material. The point was brought up that someone could easily make a giant hollow cube, and trap very much powder that could supply their own printer almost for free. Seemed logical to me.
my suggestion is to kind mixup 5x5 as simple as possible like only allow 45 degree middle slices turn, the one you have in the video is extremely messy and tbh there's no way that thing can be mass produced
@OskarPuzzle
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion. Note that mass production is not necessarily the goal.
Don't take this the wrong way. I was just saying I have an interest in making these things as well, and will do so with cheap 3D printing using ABS. :D
Why don't manufacture this using 3D printing for commercial purposes? Or do you sell your designs to manufacturers?
Have you dared to completely scramble that thing? I can't imagine how difficult it would be to solve...
@coherant6939

It would be incredibly hard 0.0
where to buy
@kstringer24 This is the first prototype.
This is crazy... not in a bad way
brilliant
Thanks for the fan message. Shapeways sends you the pieces, you have to do the assembly yourself. I always use silicone spray. I cannot solve this puzzle.
where are you from?
Please contact me privately, if you seriously want to buy this puzzle and not put off by the Shapeways price. The Shapeways "whole" is a big solid cube with the same price as the sets. It is there to advertise the sets.
You can get one from WitEden.
@Skitzo520 I'm not asking for them all to be the same size. I'm asking he could make one without the extra peices
Dear Andrew, I do not understand your comment. You are quite welcome to buy a 3D-printed puzzle of mine. Just go to my Shapeways Shop by clicking the link in the description. Or contact me privately for a completed sample. Oskar (And thank you for the fan mail!)
@kstringer24 Man's a pro, yo! I think a related question would be "What was your first twisty puzzle and how long did it take?"
you should make a 4x4 version of the mixup 5x5.
