Mixing your recorded instruments into an orchestral cue with Berlin Orchestra & Berlin Studio.

Музыка

Today, British composer and flautist Claire Wickes joins us for a unique walkthrough. This instructional video is all about learning to blend your organic instrument recordings into an orchestral piece.
To achieve this, Claire uses the industry-standard IR Berlin Studio and Orchestral Tools' all-in-one symphonic Berlin Orchestra-plus well over a decade of experience playing the flute.
And, you can purchase Berlin Orchestra and Berlin Studio in one bundle until July 18, details below.

I still see limited utility for using Berlin Studio with Berlin Orchestra but putting the flute in Telex really works well. For me, something more useful would be putting Beaufort in Teldex as that is the standard hall for the Berlin series which I use.

Yes absolutely - Berlin Studio is great to have in your arsenal if you're blending libraries and are using any of the Berlin series. I did add a tiny bit of it to the Berlin Orch tracks, mostly because it allowed me to get more out of the mix mic position. But ofc if you're using the full Berlin series you've got many mic positions to choose from. I've also used it with Beaufort as you suggested - close mics, plus Berlin Studio and it blends right in!

Those live flute and piccolo recordings dramatically elevate the piece. Don’t get me wrong, Orchestral Tools makes great sample libraries; but nothing beats a great performance. The reverb helps the tracks seem like they were recorded in the same space.

😅 thanks so much - my studio isn't a treated room (yet - hopefully one day!) so getting any recordings in there to sound anything like teldex feels like a huge achievement 😁🙏

Thanks for the great demo. I have Berlin Studio and Cinematic Rooms and I wondered if you can mix the two? Apologies if this is a silly question but I’m having issues on which to choose and whether I can combine them? Appreciate the point of Berlin is having the same exact space/room but I’ve seen a lot of composers mix different reverbs together.

would love a more in depth tutorial/walthrough of this reverb. have owned it for months now still i never use it because i do not know how to use it on my instruments to make it sound ok, it always sounds too big , dark or washed out for me. i know we could probably tweak it i guess. i'd just like to see someone use this on instruments from scratch, not just show us what they already did. Like initialize the preset, make a horn section fit into a mix. , do same thing for woodwinds, then strings. no one is doing this sort of thing. it's always just ppl showing what they already did and this is not helping me learn how to mix at all and this plugin still not being used in my mixes.

Does anyone know if this is a good library for someone looking to upgrade from Native Instruments' Symphony Series? Is this on par with or better than Spitfire's BBC offering? Thanks for any response.

  • @ASX2001

It's a question of taste regarding the sound. BBCSO feels more real, you smell the sweat of the musicians, while Orchestral Tools sounds more perfect. But even OT's new string legato is not as smooth as the old BBC string legato to me personally. For that reason I don't use their strings.

  • @nads5907

@@ASX2001 Thanks for that excellent answer. Spitfire do make very good libraries. I have their Chamber Strings Essentials, and they are very good indeed (I'll definitely be upgrading that library). I also have their BBC Discover Orchestra, and as someone who's a relative newbie to orchestration, I find it pretty educational-especially when it comes to instrument positioning. I was wondering whether to go for Albion One, but I'm guessing BBCSO is a better all-rounder?

@@nads5907 Albion One is perfect, when You want fast results, ready to play combinations of instruments, but I don't use it - because of that ;-)) When You're a "serious" beginner, then You want to put hands on each single instrument and find Your own combinations. Takes a little longer but is much more satisfying. In the end it's Yours. When You're a fan of BBC Discover, it's an easy decision. I was happy with BBC for years, also worked with the Cinematic series, but went back to the good old Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra after the big update. Love it. Lots of instruments, articulations, the great sound of the Air Lyndhurst hall... but so much choice might discourage You. :-))
