    Danny James is my new MASTER. I've already massively improved my mixing just by observing him over 2 videos. I absolutely love how I can even do a clean mix without ANY cue points with his looping technique ! Plus, exact phrasing matters less than tension building which is such a relief in addition to be a creative stimulation element. I'm so keen to jump on the Crossfader Techno DJ course ! Exactly what I needed at this point in time :)

    Love the genre snobs in the comments. Dance or don't dance, that is all. If you're worried about "this isn't techno, this is nu-minimal-tech-house-with 80s Detroit and new-wave-90's-Berlin influences and shouldn't be mixed like this" then youre 100% missing the point. Nice mix, I had a wee boogie in my kitchen.

    I have yet to come across a video about mixing real techno without effects. I guess it's more the underground style I'm looking for. None of the mixes I listen to use effects really it's more about the tracks and where you mix them. That's a different approach imo.

  • @davidrowan3853

    @davidrowan3853

    Жыл бұрын

    Most djs will use something nowadays, even the underground techno djs use a low or hi pass filter, can hear it in their sets. If your looking to learn how to mix that style without effects, just use the eq.

  • @JohnSpiegl

    @JohnSpiegl

    Жыл бұрын

    Real techno DJs won’t use heavy effects and will let tracks play out. It’s really about picking tracks perfectly and creating a vibe / atmosphere so people can get lost. If a repetitive beat changes every 2 minutes than it is hard to get in that hypnotic state. That’s what I can tell you from first hand experience being the DJ and the audience 🫡

  • @JeremyDahl

    @JeremyDahl

    Жыл бұрын

    As someone who went to movement Detroit, I can tell you, that's not true... Richie Hawtin was banging out a set and used plenty of FX Most DJs play it as safe as they can when on a big stage setting. And less creative DJs don't know how to use them well. Although this mix is very subpar.

  • @JohnSpiegl

    @JohnSpiegl

    Жыл бұрын

    @@JeremyDahl Richie Hawtin has a different style and a different way of performing than 90% of the competition. He puts 2-3 tracks together to create new ones by taking the bassline from one, the melodies from another and percussion perhaps from a third one. With that technique you‘ll need FXs to create tension. It’s certainly different to somebody playing vinyl or on CDJs in my opinion. With the „typical“ style of DJ, you won’t need many effects to maintain what the original producer of each track intended to be heard. Best way to create a hypnotic atmosphere :)

    I feel the same way. I'm desperately looking for tutorials and inspiration for blending techniques using xfader, upfaders, eq, and maybe filter at most. I find these fx and looping transitions so boring - they rob the musician of their song structure.

    All good here, there is no perfect mix. Just two thing to take in consideration: You don't drop the next track where the previous track drops again. It doesn't fit where two songs break at the same time. Unless you make a descent amount of Build up. You have to make the build up yourself with the EQs and Faders so it doesn't sound messy as in min 10:05 Practice will get you to play more with the Mids and Highs :) Nice video!

    Para quien no sabe, mejor que en esto no se fije.... Hay momentos que se le descuadran... No ecualiza ni medios ni agudos... No las suelta donde rompe el tema anterior... No cuadra donde rompen dos temas a la vez.... Le falta intensidad y usar algo más que el espiral, ni reverb, ni delay, ni gate.... Solo usa dos platos.... Ese estilo no es techno....

It might be satisfying that you show all your skills but it just ruins the flow of the music completely. Less is more. I got some more options now but I would never mix this way. It feels like a DJ having ADHD. But thanks for giving me ideas. Not my favorite music tbh

    @@davenewton2680 Mainstream EDM Djs tend to just mix one track into the beginning of the next. With lots of focus on a big build up/drop. If you watch more underground techno djs there is alot more going on. Less breaks, layering, looping with the intention of creating something unique. Something you just dont get in mainstream music.

    @@joshkenno6826 Ai. I agree in some ways. EDM DJs tend to use too many FX, loops etc. I disagree that they just blend the beginning into the end...they don't - and I actually think that's a bit of an issue tbh. I guess EDM is better suited to tricks n loops. Techno maybe needs to be treat with more respect maybe.

    @@vamosrojo56 Big breaks and build ups with snare rolls. Big ‘drops’. There is the odd song towards the end which may be closer to the genre. But if you look at some of the origional artists that founded techno you will see it is nothing like what is being played here. Jeff Mills and Dave Clark are a good example. The genre then evolved in Berlin with led to the techno played by people like Ben Klock, Ben Sims, Luke Slater etc. Obviously there are subgenres, heavier and faster stuff. But this they all fit within that same sound.
