This helps me confirm a couple things. Great mix engineers work quickly and don't overthink their decisions. And they only add plugins when they hear something that needs to be done in the music. Never pointlessly throwing a compressor on a track because a youtube video says that's what you're supposed to do. I know the video is edited, so it seems like he's moving very quickly, but you can kind of tell that he's making moves based on what he's hearing, and not just going down a list. Awesome video!

yea, def a such thing as 2much. keeping it simple/clean & no need 2 go crazy complex. was my prob 4a looong a$$ time making it super hard on myself & very frustrating. started deleting all unnecessary add ons(vst's), synths ect. jus need drums/synth or 2/kick/808/ & maybe piano or lil fx hear & there 2spice it up. works out soo damn good & brought bk the excitement into creating beatz again

I think maybe it is better to do it this way, but dont you think he can do like that because he IS experienced ? I think you need a lot of time and tweaking when you are not experienced, this is the way to get experienced and fast, there is no other way. He probably spent hours on a compressor at some point during his youth. We all know that time is your ennemy when you do a mix because your ear gets use to bad sound very fast, but well you cant help, being slow and spending hours on a track is normal for a beginner, and you stay a beginner for quite a lot of mixes...

@@skylerfelix7609 hi guys.. though I chose this specific song for this video, I didn’t prep or anything for the mix in general. These videos are to show what’s happening on the cuff. Things happen and change the pace of mixes. If I were to mix this same song a week later, I’m sure I would have reached for different things depending on what my head was doing. That’s the fun part of mixing.

@marc daniel nelson. I have a question... do you put mono or stereo vocals in your stereo bus ...I asked this because I have a problem with my mix where I send my Instruments, Drums and vocals to separate busses for processing then each group to a sub mix bus ....sounds good in the DAW but when I try the mix it the car I can hear the vocals over powering the Instrumental or certain Instruments specifically in the chorus section like say there's a guitar (main) a pad pan 45 right and a piano pan 45 left the vocal seem to drown out the piano and the pad ...any help would be good 👍

Marc D. Nelson is the perfect instructor: no ego, matter of fact and let's not waste time, simple stepped approach to tackling larger problems. He plays well to camera too- it feels as if we've all met him. Production value from the multiple cameras really helps here. Leagues ahead of other tutorials. This video definitely did make me feel a little chagrined at having chucked out cash for lesser material in the past. Great series, Warren and Marc!

Always eye (and ear) opening, watching guys like Marc working on a mix. What really impresses me each time, is how little processing is done. When hearing the rough, I already had several things in my head, but then Marc basically just wipes off a little dust and it starts to shine, when I probably would be using way too much compression and EQ and unnecessary effects, just because I think I need to do something here. Love watching these! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Exellent as usual : i see pedagogy , pricelless questions (main area young cats struggles , they usually don't know how to listen and what the track IS ASKING FOR) and NEVER vulgarity in moves , just surprised of the wide panning on HH but it participates to that overwall harmony without disturbing the center texture .... Refeshing to see poeples that knows their thing , the use of transient designer instead of eq to avoid phase issues "trick" is worth watching on its own , also the fact that he anticipates master moves is pricelless (i'm not crazy lol) ..... Great track by the way !! And finally hip hop voclas that don't sounds like broadcasts !!! Understands and respects the genre better than some hip hop ingeneers ! !

I’m a couple minutes in & I like what he’s doing. Though I prefer using old school analog eq’s versus thin transparent eq’s. But this is typical of any true professional engineer. You want that small click in the kick just a touch. So it has that punchiness. And with the snare you want that snap. Around 100-150 then 1000-2000 hi Q then around 10K. Reverb is necessary on Snares and HH’s for space. Oh now I see the Pultec the trusty UAD Pultec Pro EQ. Here we go. I like this! And the Vitamin. Ok I’m done getting excited lol. This is a great video right here!

@Marc Daniel Nelson, you've mentioned phase issues a few times in your videos, and not only on elements where they are typically discussed (drum mics). I feel like this would be a good topic for an entire lesson. Also, tips on how to keep a Weimaraner chill in the studio. Thanks for the excellent insight.

For anyone interested Knifonium synth ('Power Unison' preset) might be a good place to start in recreating the 'synth horns' @ 27:56-ish, adjust hpf/lpf to taste.

Great video - thank you very much Mark ! Though I´m not a huge hip hop fan I like your ´kissing the needle` compression approach as well as your use of reverb. One does not see this in a CLA video lol. Since you had the chance to work with masters of our trade like Bill Schnee etc. I would love to see a video of yours explaining your use of tube mics and your take on recording different instruments ( outside of UAD - I allready saw that video ) Thanks and keep on the great work ! P.S. your dog was not only sleeping, he was dreaming.... : )

Glad you’re one of those engineers who uses Tape. These days a lot of engineers want to mix with transparent plugin on top of transparent plugin. Just over-redundant transparency. Again...I love the way you’re explaining the mix process
