It depends on talent of drummer and sound youre going for. When I record our band its real drums-our drummer is excellent and plays to a click like a machine (S.O.-Grand Demise of Civilization-Pat Ruhland🤘!). Blast beats, gravity blasts, etc. Everything is mics. Only "sample sound" is the kick is both mic'd for the "boom" and a trigger track recorded in real time. Only edits are deleting the occassional double triggers which happen at the speeds we play. So i agree with the commenters here-real drums in metal are alive and well. I'll add we had a Spectre studious submit your mix session and 80% of the comments were "r2d2" "sample replace" etc so I think there is a general misconception that if its fast and tight it must be programmed. I took those comments as a compliment to our very talented deummers skills and a clean recording🤘🤘
Your apporach to this was absolutely spot on. This is how this particular style of death metal should actually sound like. Approaching this like we do modern death metal today would have ruined the entire performance.

Pretty legit metal mix, really. I like the minimalist approach; not a zillion samples added, no surgical EQ, not a ton of processing on the vocals. Still sounds dope.

When it all came together I was like "this is how I want death metal to sound". I like some death metal, though i'm mostly at home in other extreme metal styles. And of what turns me off of a lot of death metal is just how it's mixed. Thin, lifeless. Very little of it is actually heavy, it's usually just fast. This is actually heavy. Awesome.

I feel like the same can be said about thrash. Which is making a comeback and what I've heard lately sounds amazing. The mixes on Havok's V album are pristine. So I think that'll be coming down the pipe for death metal as well.

Never would've expected to hear Warren mixing something like this! Honestly he put together an absolutely great sounding old school death metal mix. I would've loved to hear a bit more 'click' on the kick drum, a bit more emphasis on the guitar transients, a brighter mix overall, and a couple dbs down on the vocals. Otherwise I feel like he nailed it.

That was...... actually pretty good warren. Shows you got solid ears to be able to take a genre you might not normally listen to and do a banger of a mix anyway. And yeah, its pretty 90s sounding. Thats a good thing, by the way.

See even though this isn't his style at all he still makes it work. A true professional. Awesome video. I picked up little things along the way.
This has the proper 90's Death metal vibe, which is great to hear in a modern setting, as everything that made that sort of sound, has fallen from the norm, and people still fall into modern techniques when trying to emulate the classic death metal vibe. so I'm super into this. Bravo sir!

Entertaining as HELL. Thanks!
These are my favorite types of videos you do on this channel. I always leave them so inspired. I end up taking mental -- or literal -- notes about which frequencies you're boosting as well as the cool tricks you're doing (like putting a transient designer on a reverb). Also, it was crazy when you switched back and forth between the original mix and yours. The original was insanely bright, but I didn't realize just how bright until you switched from yours. But then when you switched back to yours it sounded too dark until my ears adjusted. It's amazing what our ears can get used to and how quickly it happens. An issue I have is I tend to make my mixes too bright because it always sounds more exciting initially.
