Mixing Concepts 1 - Setting Up An Analog Workflow PT1

Музыка

I get a lot of questions about how I setup a mix when using the console and other outboard gear. In the "Mixing Concepts" series I'm going to show you a few different ways to combine the analog and digital worlds.
In "Setting Up An Analog Workflow PT1" I'm going to show you one way that I use the console to mix, how I setup my i/o, and how I use the benefits of digital to augment my workflow. I'll also go over my drum and bass setup for this particular mix.
kzread.info_c...
In this video I'm using Logic Pro X, the Trident 88 console, Joe Meek meC Compressors, DBX 166 & 160X, and an Overstayer VCA compressor.

    Just wanna say thank you for posting this video, I just wish more young people interested in this field will benefit from it. I am a college professor and 90% don't know anything about mixing - or real analog sound for that matter, they focus on DAW mixing only and plugins. Sadly, they've never used or even seen a mixing console. Many ask why do we need it, and that just pierces my heart. Thanks again!

    Salut Charlie, super didactic video, after sound engineering school, young pros use to focus on "the box" because of the obvious convenience and no doubt "computer generation". I belong to this new generation who dreams to revive with an analog mix at least. Personally the main difficulty lies in the workflow which could become a labyrinth then leads to a disappointment. You remind points i've been wondering about since a while. Thanks so much.

    I've navigated this exact path successfully, it took about 7 years, many setbacks. Of course in this 7 years i also became an expert on things I previously knew nothing about, learned all sorts of incidental skills besides mixing, built my own acoustic treatment, learned about acoustics and psychoacoustics, room measurement, physics of sound.. etc. So I say, go into that labryinth, and never look back! you will figure it out. Never doubt yourself.

    Until recently I used a second computer as a mixdown deck. I have one computer with a 24 I/O channel interface and another computer with a 8 I/O interface. I used the 24 like a 24 track tape recorder 24 in and 24 out. The outs are all routed through the mixer. The second computer is used like a 2 track and patched into the console just like a reel to reel. Recently however I switched up and I have two interfaces in one computer. I use protools to multi track on the 24 I/O through the console with the stereo outs of the console back into the second Apollo X4 interface and into Harrison Mixbus as a second DAW. This is all on the same computer and my mixes have never sounded better.

  • @Ultimatestudiosinc

    Hey Andrew, That really depends on your needs and budget. If you mix music with high track counts look at 24 or more channels. If your track counts are low to medium maybe 16. You could also use a 16 channel mixer and use it as a summing box and a way to interface stereo groups with other outboard gear. The trident is cool because it's a split/inline console. That means I can split my faders and monitor section during mix down for twice as many channels. Obviously I'm a Trident fan and would recommend that to anyone. I have the Trident 88 but they also have the Trident 78 that is a little less expensive. If those are out of your budget I've also used the Toft ATB and Allen & Heath consoles and have nothing bad to say about either. They worked great and both have nice eq sections.

    Awesome video,quick question tho. Is it just a matter of preference that you send the multiple kicks/snare directly to the same output? In my setup I usually send multiple kicks in the box to a bus called "kick master" and then send that to the console. Just wondering if I'm losing out on something by not doing it the other way

    Excellent video! I use a similar workflow, but I still record to tape. what I love about my setup is I have so many ways to record :) but my standard way is record all the tracks with the Toft and use out board gear to process, from there I drop it to tape, and from there into Pro Tools for final tweaks. From there back out to the Toft 2 buss ( Which I will have ether a SSL G, API 2500 to Neve compressor on it. I select which compressor based on song or client request). from there I go to the Studer 2trk tape for mix down. What I like about this setup is I get the best of both worlds of analog and digital, I am a analog die hard and will never give up tape LOL but I have been recording since the 80's and still love the sound and dealing with tape machines :) Yeah I know its a trade off but the sound it get I love, plus for me I love the interaction with the music! Please keep the video's coming.

  • @mixc8

    @mixc8

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for getting back to me, my studio is called Mixcelplex Studio's www.mixcelplexproductions.com what I like about your studio is you seem to record just like I do :) I take the best of the old school and combine with the new school, meaning I track to tape and edit ITB. See for me analog is not only about tape it's about the interaction with the music, for me turning real knobs and pushing real faders is what I live for, and yes even dealing with the tape machines. Yes it's a trade off, I have to deal with tape calibration, maintenance etc. But you know what, at the end of the day I love the sound I get and the interaction with the music. Don't get me wrong plug-ins do an outstanding job and I do use them as well, but for me and again for me, nothing like hardware. I am actually looking for a bigger space now, I live here in NYC because I want a Studer A800 and Ampex ATR 102, and plus I want to upgrade my console from the ToFT ATB 32 to the Trident 80. See I do want to go SSL, but for the price point of the Trident 80 for 32 channels at $40k you never are going to get 32 channels of SSL or Neve for that fact under $100K My goal some day is Studio A SSL, Studio B Neve Studio C API Studio D Trident :)

  • @Ultimatestudiosinc

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Leo! It has been a while since I've worked on a Mackie 8 bus but if I remember correctly there is no monitor input for each channel. Only Line in, Direct Out and Insert. (Is that correct?) That means you'll come out of your i/o and go directly into the Line Inputs (if you're not using a patchbay). If you want to monitor analog WHILE tracking you will have to use it as a split console. Meaning a mediated fader for input and a dedicated fader for monitoring. For instance: recording inputs 1-20 and monitoring outputs 21-40. You could also do all of your monitoring levels, panning, etc.. in the box as well and just designate 2 faders on the console as your monitoring returns. If the Mackie has a 2-Bus input you could use that as well and not tie up any of your monitors. Hope this helps!

    this can be done at an insert point on the channel, a special jack that sends a signal and recieves one back on the same connector. The cable inserted into said connector must be a Y cable, i.e., it must feed two (necc. unbalanced) connectors, one to feed the outboard comp's input, and one to return the output of the comp back to the insert point. Like this, you could have a mic or line plugged into the channel directly, yet still be placing that inserted comp in between the input stage and the channel EQ, fader etc.

(Honestly, Jeremiah the Bullfrog has nothing on me.) I have been putting together a pile of home recording gear to set up for us. (We all have day jobs and as I said, no illusions. We are in it for fun and charity.) I have what I think is an okay set up but need education. Never too old to learn; even at my age. I have the direct connect thing okay but now... a patch bay... The way to do it is to have the outputs of the audio interface plugged into the tape returns or line inputs of the mixer, then the Main L/R outs of the console plugged back into the audio interface's inputs. Then, in your DAW set each channel output to go into the console's input of the matching number (it doesn't have to match, but it certainly makes staying organized a whole lot easier.) So say you want your kick drum on channel 1 of your console. You would hook up Output 1 of your audio interface to Line In 1 or Tape Return 1 on the console, then in the DAW send the kick drum out of Output 1, and it should be on Channel 1 of the console. Then when it is time to print the mix, you'd make a stereo track in your DAW and plug the console's Main L/R outs into the inputs of that channel in your DAW and record those.

    @@morbidmanmusic I've heard some engineers say that summing multiple mics pre-A/D converter has a different impact on the sound than digitally summing, or even having them come from digital-to-analog for summing in the analog domain. I haven't had a chance to compare the methods myself, but I do know that other analog processing (i.e. compression, EQ) pre-conversion has a different impact on sound than post-conversion, so it wouldn't surprise me.

    Mackie 1604 vlz pro. you can get one for about $250 on ebay. then get a 2 mic usb computer interface like the Focusrite 2i4 2gen: you can get a refurbished one for $140 on ebay. make sure to get an interface with recording software. connect the main outputs of the board to the interface and Bam you got ya a hybrid 16 channel DAW setup for about $400. great thing about the setup is you get 4 aux with the board for some outboard processors alone with the ones in the box. you can bus your drums out with an out board compressor on them. a little time consuming recording multi track but you get good experience in routing.

They just released the Trident 78 is that comes in a little less than the 88 but is a definite step up from the ATB; www.tridentaudiodevelopments.com/trident-78-console/ Having said that I had an ATB for a while and did some amazing work on it. Glad you have positive reviews on the Toft, I've been keeping my eyes on an atb 16 (with 8bus). Loved your workflow in this video - made me think how 24 channels might be useful.. especially when, like you, I am sending multiple kicks (or snares, etc) to a BUS. Would allow more flexibility for me.

    It depends. If I'm going to another mix I probably wouldn't. I would just setup Logic to send out the new song on the correct channels of the console and go from there. However I go from project to project so I have mix sessions and tracking sessions sometimes back to back so I am constantly changing the setup. For mixing I have a "template" so to speak (or at least a starting point) so it does make it a little easier. Does that answer your question?

  • @sophiatyriel7399

    @sophiatyriel7399

    It just requires dedication, and planning. You WILL spend all of your money on music gear, if you really get into it. Every guy does, it never ends. Learning signal flow is somewhat difficult, but helps to start with a general knowledge of electricity and how it is harnessed, every connection made is a 2-way circuit, it's all about Sources, and Destinations. In this case, DAW tracks are sent as digital signals (samples, at no less than 44,100 a Second) via usb/firewire/other to the D/A converter inside your interface. The more D/A converters on board your interface, the more analog signals can be routed out of the interfaces analog outputs, to feed the mixer's channels. You feed the main outputs, or subgroup outputs of the mixer into hardware INPUTS on your interface, you then select those inputs as your monitor source. This is done in different ways, sometimes from an interface host app, it can also be done inside your DAW by monitoring only those relevant inputs, and being sure all other DAW tracks in your session are headed OUT of the box or are muted. There's so much more but I hope this can help you get started on your quest.
