Mitsubishi Pajero/ Shogun 2.8 Poor cold starting fix - Heater plugs and relay 4M40T Engine

Now the cold weather is here, I have finally had to fix the poor starting Pajero.
It was assumed that new heater plugs would fix the problem as the plugs had not been changed in 20k.
It needed plugs but the real problem lied with the relay, I managed to find one in a local breakers for £5. It now starts perfectly!

Was my problem exactly. Although I did not have to change the relay but only hooked it up directly to the battery and cleaned the connections. Thanks - your vid helped a lot.

@@B3NN10N I have a Pajero V20 with a 2.5 TD 1997 engine, in the cold starting phase it struggles a little to start, I replaced the spark plugs but the problem persists, I thought about the relay but I'm not sure why the preheating light is too short... less than 1 second , is there a timer somewhere ? and where? thanks in advance

Hello. Glow plugs? I think your problem is that relay, this light didn’t stay on long when the relay was faulty.

@@B3NN10N hello ...The glow plugs had to be replaced, two of them gave incorrect resistor values, but the problem is the insufficient ignition timing, what manages the preheating duration time? the relay itself? or other?

I had a problem with my glow plug relay on my 1996 2.8 shorty 80 quid plus vat from mitsubishi. So I purchased a 12 volt 1967 mini 950cc starter bulk head solanoid and hard wired in a glow plug switch on the dash 6 second burst even in winter zero temp and she fires up without a problem. Thing is the control ecu unit on these vehicles go bad after many years and keep the glow plugs feed so they burn out. Cost to convert 12.95 for the relay and approx 6 pounds for a switch and cable all under 20 quid. Have had my glow plugs in since I installed new mitsubishi replacements back in 2008 old girl is 23 years old and drives like a new vehicle, happy mud slinging.😊

You could have picked up a brand new 100 amp Durite relay for around £10. Thats what I replaced my one with when it packed up 9 years ago. Also beat glow plugs for the are NGK CZ256, they aint cheap, but they do last a long time, as long as your heater circuit including the timer in the ECU are all working properly

Hi folks, i see ar this very location, in mitsubishi 400 l , same motor, indeed a fuse 80 amps, bolted on with 10 mm screw...is that relay? Or the fuse sitting above it? This fuse is covered with yellowish plastic cap... Next question: the glowindicator on dash...does it show , even if there is no real glowing goin on? Thx bob the belgian🇧🇪 What easy measurments can one do to check the plugs or relay while in the car? Thx for interesting fluent presentation!

I had the same problem, changed the plus and the relay, found out it was the wire to the relay from the 80 amp fuse, lights would come on, no relay click as you turn the ignition,,,so it was the live wire to the plugs..i changed the 80 amp fuse located next to the battery..voila/

hey i have a mitsubishi montero, a close cousin of the pajero, and i know in the cold its been having bad starts, but today i went out and i didnt even get it to turn over... any thoughts? it might be this issue, found this video after i spent 2 hours outside trying to even get a small turn over, but wondering if you ever had any problems with it getting so cold before you changed these out that when you turned the key over, if it didnt even make a sound, i know my electrics are working for the most part, my headlamps work fine, and all the lectronics work as they should, but i cant get it to turn over... will try later today when it hopefully warms up at least a little, but as of right now im without a car

My problem is the Ignition Coil doesn't seem to heat the glow plugs so when I replaced the relay I put a push button on top of the relay to open the solenoid to allow the plugs to glow, not sure if I have a break in a wire or not
